Altrincham called on two youth team members to join their first-team squad on Monday at Grimsby. They were left-winger Sam Langford and defender James Smart. Seven youth teamers have been named in squads for the first-team this season; as well as Sam and James, these were Ashley Woods, Matt Fearon, Jake Barnabas, Joe Coombs and Theo Kidd. Also at Grimsby on Saturday was youth goalkeeper Adam Reid who gave a fine display of shot stopping in the warm up at Blundell Park. SEVEN GET CALL UP

Seven of Alty's Youth team were in the Altrincham first-team squad on Tuesday for the Cheshire Senior Cup Final. And six of them got onto the pitch during the game. The entire back four at kick-off comprised Youth Team players, with Matt Fearon at right back, Jake Barnabas on the left and Joe Coombs with James Smart being the central pairing. Both Ashley Woods and Theo Kidd were secind-half substitutes whilst Sam LAngford was the unlucky player not to get off the bench.

In the Sale & Altrincham Advertiser, after the game, Alty manager Ken McKenna said "I think the young lads at the back did very well overall. We put out a very young side while Northwich used their extra experience to win the game".

Left: Joe Coombs (left) and Jake Barnabas made their debuts at centre- and left-back for Alty in the CSC Final on Tuesday. Here they are seen in last Sunday's youth team game against Mossley.

    MOSSLEY VIEW

The excellent Mossley website has a report of Sunday's game against Alty Youth which revals that "Despite playing without a recognised goalkeeper Mossley still had to much for an understrength Altrincham side in Sunday's encounter... Antony Dorney was the man between the sticks for Mossley as regular keepers Nick Howard and James Dean were both unfit... Wes Harney, who had struggled to get into the game in the first half then became Mossley's hero with a well taken second half hat-trick... The two sides meet again next Sunday at Seel Park in the semi final of the NWYA Open Cup".

ALTY YOUTH 0 MOSSLEY YOUTH 4

With five of Altrincham's regular players rested in advance of their possible involvement in the Cheshire Senior Cup this Tuesday - The Robins have several first-teamers injured, ineligible or suspended for that game - this was always going to be a difficult match against a good Mossley side, and so it proved. But the match was marred by the need to call two ambulances to deal with a suspected fractured ankle for Mossley's Alex Clarke and a broken left collar-bone for Alty's Sam Grimshaw. Trailing 1-0 at the interval, Alty enjoyed their best spell early in the second half before conceding three further goals. Report here.

Tom has been on a soccer scholarship in Mississippi, USA since leaving the Alty Youth team in 2009.

The Belhaven site adds that "Tom Cosgrave, a sophomore defender who hails from Manchester, England, was selected for a spot on the 2010 SSAC All-Tournament team of year. Cosgrave provided solid defense in Belhaven’s tournament games in which the Blazers posted a solid 8 shutouts. JOSH RETURNS

Altrincham FC Youth team manager George Heslop recently sought a recruit to his coaching team and the call has been answered...

Indeed, it was like an "old boys" convention at the Altrincham FC Youth match on Sunday - and that is not a reference to manager George Heslop! In fact there were three of George's former youth team players at the game. Josh Collins, winger in George's Alty Youth sides of 2002-03 and 2003-04, when he played alongside Lewis Chalmers, Steve Lunt and the Lugsden twins, who all reached Alty's first team, has joined the coaching team for Altrincham FC Youth. Josh spent three years in the USA playing for DC United reserves and first team before a spell in Australia. When George Heslop recently asked for help with coaching, Josh approached his former manager and joined the team. Josh is seen on the right of the adjacent picture, playing for Alty Youth.

Also watching the match was Youth team captain of 2004-05 and 2005-06, Richard Gresty, who also represented the English Colleges' national team whilst with Alty. Richard has since had spells at a number of clubs including Stalybridge Celtic. And from nearer twenty years ago, Paul Jones, was also a spectator. Paul played for George in Sunday league as well as graduating to the Altrincham FA District youth team under George's guidance.

    YOUTH TEAM FIXTURES 2010-11

They have only just finished the 2009-10 season, but Altrincham FC Youth have already planned two pre-season friendlies. After a trial match on 27 June, from which manager George Heslop will start to reshape his squad - a major task, given that most of his players from last season are now over-age for the under-18s' North West Youth Alliance Premier Division in 2010-11, two pre-season games have been arranged:
  • Sunday 11 July at 2pm at Blessed Thomas Holford, versus Congleton Town
  • Saturday 17 July at 11am at Egerton Youth Club, Knutsford, versus Macclesfield Town.

    SEVEN-POINT MARGIN

After applying the points adjustments for fair play (points are lost if bookings exceed certain levels), Altrincham ended up winning the Premier Division by a margin of seven points.
