REPORT

Alty's starting line-up included just five players from last year's squad who were able to meet the age qualification rules for the NW Youth Alliance in 2010-11. It is a major job for manager George Heslop and his coaching team to whittle down the numerous applicants into a squad each year. This year Tony Ward, a local man who has recently been successfully coaching in Australia, has joined Tony Spilsbury, Gareth Thomas and Richard Williams in George's team. Watching the game was former Alty midfielder, Tony Kelly, who is now employed at Bolton Wanderers Academy.

Right: Ansima Matadaro

In sunny but blustery conditions, Altrincham started brightly with their Congolese striker Matadaro (right) going close in the fourth minute, after Owen Davies had even earlier seen a fierce shot saved by the Congleton keeper. It was Brown who was next to test the visitors, with an excellent shot which the keeper did well to hold.

Gradually Congleton, playing into the breeze, settled and their number seven got up the right wing to put in a cross cum shot which Fossdyke did well to parry over the bar for a corner (10 mins). At the other end, Madden smartly blocked an intended clearance which rebounded off the Alty striker and went close to going into the net. After 14 minutes Madden then saw a shot held at the second attempt, as the Altrincham side played some good football despite their unfamiliarity with each other.

Asante, on the right wing, then had to be replaced after suffering a leg injury and, two minutes after Congleton had made their first substitution, Wallace came on to replace him (26 mins). Almost immediately Wallace's cross from the by-line was fumbled clear by the keeper for a corner. Neos on the Alty left was making an impression as was Matadaro up front but it was a game of few clear chances.

After Fossdyke had held a 30-yard Congleton freekick, Madden hit the defensive wall with a similar freekick for Altrincham (33 mins). Fossdyke then came out well to gather but was caught by a raised foot and needed treatment. Congleton then enjoyed a period of pressure but half time arrived with the score goalless.

Both sides made multiple changes at the interval. For Altrincham Reid came on in goal for Fossdyke; O'Donnell came on as captain at right back with Fearon moving to centre midfield. Wilson replaced Choudhary at centre-back alongside Barnabas who took over from Cunningham. Grimshaw came on for Smart and Langford replaced Madden.

An early slip by Wilson almost let in Congleton but the centre-back went on to have a solid game for Altrincham. O'Donnell was giving a committed performance at right back but the game was not producing any chances at either end as it approached the hour mark. Madden now reappeared, replacing Neos, but initially slotting into midfield rather than up front in his customary role (57 mins).

Play continued fairly evenly before the best bit of action of the half saw a cross from the right by O'Donnell headed well by Wallace, but the Congleton keeper made a magnificent save, diving to his left and holding the goalbound ball (83 mins). Now, Brown came back on to replace Fearon in midfield (84 mins). Soon, Brown turned well on the right and fired at goal but could only find the side netting from an acute angle (86 mins). Alty's late flourish continued as Davies fired narrowly over the bar from Wallace's feed (88 mins). The final significant action saw Congleton fire a freekick over the Alty bar from 35 yards.
