REPORT

For this match played on the artificial surface at BTH, Altrincham kept the starting eleven which had beaten FC United the previous weekend. The visitors settled the better in the early stages and much of the play was at the Alty end before an eighth minute 25 yarder from Matt Fearon cleared the Prescot bar.

A minute later, however, and Prescot had taken the lead. Their no.11 advanced up the middle and fed the no.6, ahead of him to his left. He slotted the ball past the advancing and unprotected Adam Reid in the Alty goal (9 mins).

Prescot continued to threaten but Alty were saved from the next attack by an offside decision. It almost did get worse for Alty when a freekick came off Jake Barnabas and struck his own post before being cleared (16 mins). The visitors doubled their lead in the 18th minute when they got the benefit of an offside decision and the number 10 drew Reid before scoring.

After Wallace had been booked for persistent fouling, Alty had another scare when Reid came out to the left of his goal but could not get the ball. However, soon afterwards, Alty won their first corner through Langford. Alty's best effort to date came in the 28th minute when Langford fed Woods and his cross rolled across the goalmouth and just evaded Theo Kidd in the six-yard box.

Alty's improvement continued as Woods's well hit shot was beaten out by the Prescot keeper (32 mins). The visitors' keeper then had to smother smartly as Woods closed in on another half chance.

At the other end Reid saved well. As the interval approached Alty had a good chance when Modupe-Ojo's cross from the right found Kidd but his header was saved (41 mins). Next a Langford short was saved (43 mins) before the Prescot keeper made another fine save, beating out a Woods effort, which Kidd was then unable to turn into the net (44 mins). The theme of Alty shots being saved or missing the target continued in added time when another Woods shot was deflected over the target.

Alty's improvement towards the end of the first half gave hope of a revival and the team came out in positive fashion at the start of the second period, winning two early corners. Between these a tremendous shot from Grimshaw flashed narrowly wide. Altrincham were now well on top and they got a goal back in the 57th minute when Langford got forward on the left and his low cross was volleyed home impressively by Woods.

Next a 40 yard effort from Wallace had the Prescot keeper scrambling to tip the ball over the bar for another corner. From Alty's fourth corner of the half, in the 62nd minute, James Smart rose well to head narrowly over the bar.

Prescot made a change soon afterwards as their no.17 replaced no.9. Soon afterwards the sub collided with Alty's Modupe-Ojo and both needed treatment (74 mins). But just as Alty looked well capable of levelling the game, they conceded a third goal. An unnecessary foul on the no.17, who was still limping badly from his injury, gave Prescot a freekick 40 yards out. Their no.6 took it and Alty failed to clear it, allowing the no.2 to score from right of the goal; 3-1 after 77 minutes.

Prescot made another change and the new player, no.12, almost scored with his first touch, but Grimshaw cleared off the line (79 mins). Alty got back into the game when Woods got to the by-line, left of goal and his low cross was turned into his own goal by a Prescot defender (83 mins).

Alty now made their first substitution as Riley replaced Modupe-Ojo (84 mins). Soon a looping header from Woods hit the Prescot bar (87 mins) and after another Alty corner, Noon replaced Kidd for the Robins (89 mins).

But once again Alty were caught out from a freekick taken by the visitors’ no.6. His ball to the back post from 40 yards out saw Reid punch clear but the ball was not cleared and the Prescot no.12 hooked the ball into the net to make it 4-2 to Cables (90 mins). Two and a half added minutes made no difference to the score as Alty reflected on a game which they had looked capable of retrieving midway through the second half.
