More than a month after their last fixture of the season, Altrincham FC learned on Saturday that they had been pipped at the post for the Cheshire League title when their rivals, Pilkington FC beat Congleton VR 1-0 to clinch the title on goal difference. Both Alty and Pilkington amassed 64 points but Alty's goal difference was five goals worse.

RESERVES' WAITING GAME

On Tuesday night, at the J.Davidson Stadium, Altrincham Reserves ended their league season with a 4-0 win against Greenalls Padgate St. Oswald's. The result left them awaiting the outcome of Pilkington FC's remaining fixtures to determine who will be the Cheshire League Premier Division champions. The second-placed side needs to win its three remaining fixtures to match Alty's points tally. If they do so, goal difference would determine the destination of the championship.

After a goalless first half against Greenalls, four Altrincham goals in a ten-minute spell in the second half settled the encounter. Reece Colley broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with Callum Dolan (right) doubling the advantage barely a minute later. Dolan made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute before Shaun Densmore completed the scoring.

As Alty await their rival's results, Pilkington's next game is away this Saturday to Greenalls Padgate St. Oswald's.

Altrincham's side tonight included four first-team squad members. Shaun Densmore, Simon Richman, Max Harrop and loanee Callum Dolan were all in a starting eleven, which also included trialist left-winger Kieran Holsgrove (18) who came through the West Bromwich youth system before joining Watford.

ALTRINCHAM RESERVES 5-3 EGERTON FC

In Tuesday night's match at the J. Davidson Stadium, Knutsford side Egerton FC took a 26th minute lead from the penalty spot. The visitors' striker, Darius Ofei, won possession but was brought down by Tom Clarke as he got into the box. The number nine got up to beat Andrew Jones from twelve yards.

Right: Alty salute Callum Dolan after his goal had made it 3-1. Left to right we see Dontai Gabidon, Matt Cook, Callum Dolan, Tom Clarke, Sam Heathcote and Jordan Hulme, with Reece Coley in the background.

Nine minutes later, Alty levelled the score when Jordan Hulme, playing to regain fitness after serving his four-match suspension, turned well and netted. The visitors had looked threatening up front but were disappointed to concede a second goal just before the interval when Reece Coley tapped in, after good work on the right by Dontai Gabidon.

The second half saw Altrincham impose themselves but the visitors matched the hosts' tally of three second-half goals. First of all, Alty made it 3-1, three minutes after the break, when a corner from the right evaded Sam Heathcote but fell for new signing Callum Dolan. From more than twenty yards he lashed a fierce drive into the net.

Substitute Ben Elliott made it 4-1 after 69 minutes when he worked himself an opening before finishing confidently. Two minutes later Hulme made it 5-1, with a neat dribble inside the box and a calm finish.

But, eight minutes from time, Egerton capitalised on substitute Sam Corbishley's mispass to score their second through Abzuhalli. And the visitors added a third, from the second penalty of the night awarded against Tom Clarke. This one seemed a little harsh but mirrored the sequence of the first spot-kick with Ofei both winning the penalty before converting it (90 mins).

ALTRINCHAM RESERVES (Red & white striped shorts, black shorts, red socks): 1. Andrew JONES (c), 2. Harry SHERIDAN, 3. Matthew COOK, 4. Callum JONES, 5. Sam HEATHCOTE, 6. Tom CLARKE, 7.
