ALTY HIT FIVE

On Sunday, Altrincham FC Youth won their latest tie in the George Heslop & Neil Thomason Memorial Cup 5-0, away to Prescot Cables.

There were braces for Sumner and Goulden with Billingsley the other scorer for Altrincham. Coincidentally that was exactly the same list of scorers from the previous fixture, a 5-4 win over Stockport County.

Out of the starters from that last match were Johnston, McGowan and Mongan, with Bohe, Plested and Thoms replacing them.

The starting line-up comprised Ryan Forde, Matthew Plested, Joshua Jordan, Frazer Graham, Lewis Waller, Theo Donachie, Dionicio Bohe, Alex Goulden, Maxwell Thoms, Lewis Billingsley and Matthew Sumner. On the bench were Ryan Radi, Ali Khral and Jonathan Phillips

YOUTHS HIT NINE

In what has now been renamed the George Heslop & Neil Thomason Memorial Cup, Altrincham overhwhelmed Prescot Cables 9-1 in the NWYA under-18s' cup competition last Sunday. The newly named competition brings together the names of Altrincham's former youth team manager George Heslop and his former coach Neil Thomason. Until now the trophy had been played solely named in Neil's memory and had a knockout format.

The competition this season initially involves groups of four teams playing each other, home and away.

The starting line up for Sunday's game at Manchester Health Academy comprised: Ryan Forde, Matthew Plested, Alfie Johnston, Dionicio Bohe, Maxwell Thoms, Joshua Jordan, Lewis Waller, Oran McGowan, Alex Goulden, Lewis Billingsley and Matthew Sumner. The subs comprised Joel Jennings, Scott Johnston, Ali Khral and Rayan Radi.

Two Alty players (Lewis Billingsley and Alex Goulden) hit hat-tricks whilst Matt Sumner, Maxwell Thoms and Ali Khral completed the scoring.

Next Sunday, in the same cup competition, Altrincham are away to AFC Fylde before a home tie against Stockport County on 25 April.

The return tie at Prescot Cables follows on 2 May followed by the home tie against AFC Fylde on 9 May. Then, on 16 May, Alty are away to Stockport County.

ALTY YOUTH 1-2 PETERBOROUGH UNITED YOUTH

A very creditable performance from Altrincham Youth was not quite enough to see them through to the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup at the J. Davidson Stadium. Instead it will be The Posh who themselves will make an inaugural appearance in Round Three, at home to Doncaster Rovers.

The Posh dominated possession throughout but lacked much incision. The visitors took a 28th minute lead from the penalty spot after a trip by Donachie. But four minutes later Billingsley scored a fine goal from left of the target to make it one apiece.

The Posh again dominated possession in the second half but it took them till the 78th minute to get a second goal. O'Connell lost his marker and nodded in from very close range at the back post from a corner.

In the fifth added minute Alty substitute Morrison volleyed home only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

FA YOUTH CUP

Altrincham FC reports that "Altrincham U18s will be aiming to reach the FA Youth Cup Third Round for the first time in their history when Peterborough United visit The J.Davidson Stadium for a Second Round tie on Friday November 20th. Kick-off is at 6.30pm.

The club has received confirmation from the Football Association that the tie can take place as both Altrincham and Peterborough United are elite clubs.

The tie will be played behind closed doors but will be streamed by 'Alty TV Live'...

U18s manager, Paul Fay was delighted, 'The success was a display of their ability as individuals and as a group to perform and take on instruction with the game plan which we have been working on during the last few sessions. It was difficult to go away from home against a full-time squad and watching Eccleshill's performance against Gateshead we knew that we had a tough game ahead.

'As we progress now into the second round against Peterborough at home, this is where the differences will be more clear between us being part time and a full-time League One club...

'It’s very pleasing to see the result from the Senior Cup for the first team where players were involved who started with our first year youth squad and that the player pathway we have engineered at Altrincham FC has started to pay off.'"

ECCLESHILL UNITED YOUTH 1-3 ALTRINCHAM YOUTH

In their FA Youth Cup First Round tie in Yorkshire against Eccleshill United, Altrincham progressed to Round Two. They took a fifteenth-minute lead through Alex Goulden who finished off a Sumner feed.

Early in the second half Altrincham netted a penalty through Alex Goulden to make it 2-0, only for Eccleshill to pull a goal back soon afterwards. Alty netted a third goal from a Luigi Mongan freekick in the 74th minute.

The opposition in Round Two, at Altrincham, will be the winners of the tie between Newmarket Town and Peterborough United, which went to penalties. (Result to follow).

ALTY PROGRESS IN YOUTH CUP

Despite being second best for much of the game, Altrincham FC Youth staged a dramatic late comeback to take their FA Youth Cup qualifying match to a penalty shoot-out, which they won 4-2.

Playing again behind closed doors, but watched by more than two hundred on the Alty TV streaming service and with more than a hundred also tuning in on Radio Robins, Altrincham had taken an eleventh-minute lead from the penalty spot.

Lively striker Matthew Sumner won the ball near halfway, played a one-two with a team-mate, and then broke forward, up the middle-left towards goal. Inside the box, Shields' keeper Dobson dived at his feet and was adjudged to have conceded a penalty. Sumner got up to score from the spot, despite the keeper almost keeping his effort out.

After a first half of few other chances at either end, Alty retained their lead till just after half-time when Shields' substitute McLeod, who had only joined the game at the interval, converted a corner with a low tap-in after being left unmarked.

Above: More than 220 supporters watched Matthew Sumner net the winning penalty on the excellent Alty TV streaming service on Thursday night.

Shields went on the dominate much of the second half and, deservedly, they went ahead in the 68th minute when McLeod scored an impressive solo goal, running some forty yards up the left before netting with a low shot.

Alty rode out plenty of South Shields' pressure before raising their game in the closing stages. A freekick from deep on the right was glanced home by the head of Alty substitute Goulden in the 89th minute. FIve minutes of added time were played before a penalty shootout became necessary with the tie locked at 2-2.

The visitors netted the first spot-kick but saw their second hit the bar and their third saved. Alty netted all of their first three kicks, before Shields made it 2-3 and Sumner stepped up to seal the victory 4-2 in the shootout.

For Alty this was a notable scalp against a Tyneside team with a full-time Academy and a youth set-up which reached the Third Round Proper in last year's FA Youth Cup.

In the First Round Proper of this year's competition, Altrincham now travel to Eccleshill United. The side, from near Bradford, overcame Gateshead in the last round, earlier this week.

Youth Team manager, Paul Fay is looking forward to Thursday night and reflected on Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Chester in The North West Youth Alliance, when Luigi Mongan was on the mark for the U18s.

'It isn’t easy when we face yet another full time squad and it will be difficult to compete against but the group of players Sam (Heathcote) and I are working with this year are technically developed and if they focus on their own roles then it will be an interesting game'...

The winners of Thursday night's tie will travel to Gateshead or Eccleshill United, who meet at The International Stadium on Wednesday, in the First Round Proper, guaranteeing that a non-league team will reach the Secondnd Round Proper.

ALTY PROGRESS IN FA YOUTH CUP

Altrincham welcomed City of Liverpool to the J. Davidson Stadium on Friday night for an FA Youth Cup Second Preliminary Round match, played behind closed doors.

After an entertaining and fairly even first half, the score remained goalless, though the visitors had twice struck the woodwork.

The second half was also good entertainment from two well-matched sides and Alty were indebeted more than once to the legs of keeper Forde in keeping the opposition from scoring. But the deadlock was broken in the 65th minute when the lively Alty striker, Matthew Sumner, was upended by the Liverpool keeper and a penalty was awarded. Sumner's penalty-kick was well saved but he converted the rebound to give his side the lead.

But Alty's lead was not finally doubled till the 89th minute when good work from substitute Graves and Waller saw Billingsly drive home a low shot from the outer left-hand reaches of the box, into the far corner of the net.

City of Liverpool had given a good acount of themselves and a two-goal margin of defeat was perhaps a little harsh on them.
