FA YOUTH CUP EXIT

Above: Alty line up before kick-off against Curzon Ashton.

In Thursday's Preliminary Round Qualifying of the FA Youth Cup, Altrincham played Curzon Ashton at the J. Davidson Stadium but lost, after extra time and a penalty shoot out. After a slow start, Mercurius put Alty ahead in the 42nd minute with a good finish from left of goal following Donachie's advance up the middle. But a handball decision gave Curzon an equalizing penalty just before the break.

Three minutes after the interval Mulvey turned and shot past keeper Torrance to give Curzon the lead. In the 66th minute Alty equalised when Donachie netted folllowing a corner. The score remained unaltered at 2-2, even after extra time and so a penalty shoot-out ensued. Despite Torrance making three fine saves from Curzon spot-kicks, Alty spurned the chance to win the shoot-out at 3-3 when they put a kick over the bar and then put their seventh effort wide, for Curzon to win 4-3.

In earlier rounds Alty had squeezed through 4-3 after extra time at Radcliffe Borough before being granted a walkover against Louth. Home wins against Yorkshire clubs Pickering Town and Hallam followed before the clash with a third Yorkshire club in the shape of Barnsley.

A 4-1 win over Vauxhall Motors followed before Nostell Miners' Welfare were beaten 10-3 at Moss Lane, with Pouncey netting five times. That win earned a home tie against Wrexham which Alty won 2-1. The Saddlers' team that night included Amadou Bakayoko, who nowadays is in Coventry City's first team in League One. (Action from the Walsall game is seen, right).

YOUTH NEWS

One of Altrincham's rivals in the NW Youth Alliance, Chorley, report that their "under-18s head into the 2018/19 North West Youth Alliance Premier Division campaign with a new man at the helm. Declan Williams, an experienced UEFA B licence coach who's worked across the football spectrum in the UK and aboard, has stepped up from a successful spell with our under-16s. Last season's manager Ben Howard joins The Magpies' Development Squad.

Joining Dec in the revamped management setup is former Development Squad coach Dale Boydell. Taking the role of assistant manager, the former semi-pro and army skipper will fulfil the position while completing his UEFA B license.

Dave Livesey is the third member of the team, moving up with Dec from the under-16s side. A professional during a short spell at Burnley in his younger days, Dave brings a huge amount of experience to the role of coach.

'We are looking forward to our season with the new under-18s squad,' Dec told chorleyfc.com. 'There are around 40 players to look at for our upcoming season, so the expansion of our management team was a necessity. We can't wait to see what all the lads are capable of.'"
