14 December 2004

LANCASTER YOUTH 0 ALTY YOUTH 1

Alty Youth's fourth successive win is reported here.

OUR RIVALS

The UniBond League reports on one of Alty's league rivals, Woodley Sports Youth, who "have been entered into the Premier Division of the North West Allied Trophies League... Woodley’s entry into the Premier Division, rather than the First Division was based entirely on the status the first team had achieved within the UniBond League. The League contains Youth sides including Marine, Leigh RMI, Barrow, Altrincham, Morecambe and Lancaster City. With a young side of almost exclusively 16 year olds, Woodley can be fairly happy with their exploits, pre the Xmas break! The League campaign has proven to be a real test, with only one win from seven attempts, 2 draws and four defeats. The cup competitions however, have seen more success. A place in the Semi-Final of the Premier cup was secured with an excellent performance against Leigh RMI here at Lambeth Grove. With the draw to take place in the New Year, Woodley will face one of the following, holders Altrincham, Barrow A.F.C. or Morecambe".

Marine Youth drew 2-2 with Bootle on Sunday but on Saturday, manager "Roly Howard called on 17 year old Youth team 'keeper Ben Barnes at North Ferriby United. Sadly it was not to be a happy debut as Marine went down to a 2-0 defeat".

YOUTH CUP

NL Daily reports that "The draw for the fourth round proper of the FA Youth Cup has thrown up the amazing possibility of Burscough’s youth team travelling to the capital next month to face the mighty Arsenal for a place in the last sixteen... For that to happen, however, Arsenal must first beat Crystal Palace and Burscough have to overcome Preston North End at Victoria Park next Wednesday". Burscough have already defeated Bradford City 3-2 at Valley Parade. "Expected to be in the Burscough squad is Graeme Rooney, the younger brother of Manchester United & England striker Wayne Rooney". Burscough have got through 6 rounds already, 5 of them away from home.

    1 August 2004

    FIXTURES

The NW Youth Allied Trophies fixtures are now out. Alty's first four league games are on the Fixtures page and the rest will follow in midweek.

Three of last season's Premier teams are missing from the NWYA Premier Division this year:

  • Prestwich Heys have withdrawn both of their teams from the NWYA.
  • Ashton Athletic have reduced from two to one team, which will play in Division One.
  • South Sefton Borough are not competing this season.

Into their places come Bootle and First Touch Halewood (formerly Halewood School), both from Merseyside, and Woodley Sports from Stockport. First Touch were promoted from Division One.

The 12 teams in the NWYA Premier in 2004/05 are therefore: Altrincham, Eagley, Euxton Villa, Marine "A", Lancaster City, Morecambe "A", St Helens College, Leigh RMI, Barrow, First Touch Halewood, Bootle and Woodley Sports. Town Green and Kingsley United have both rejoined the NWYA but will play in the First Division next season. Division One will comprise 13 teams, with one of last season's teams, Chorley, having withdrawn.

    FRIENDLY

Altrincham Youth have a friendly next Sunday (8th) against Runcorn at The Pavilions (Mond FC).

    BEST WISHES

The Club's best wishes for a speedy recovery go to manager George Heslop who is unwell at the moment. Hopefully George will soon be back in action. Meanwhile Neil Thomason continues his successful combination with George as Youth team coach this season and further help is coming this season from Tony Spilsbury, a former Alty Reserves manager in the Roy Rees/Les Rigby era, who has kindly volunteered his services to the club.

    YOUTHS LOOKING FOR SPONSORS

The Pink has a piece on the Alty Youth team's recent presentation night and the award made to former Robins' defender Malcolm Bailey for his role in helping to raise £1,000 for the Youth team through activities at the Stonemason's Arms in Timperley. The article recalls how the Alty Youth team won the double this season and that former players such as Wes Wilkinson and Mario Daniel have "gone on to play for Oldham Athletic and Leigh RMI respectively". After references to player of the year Matt Tooth (right) and to Steve Lunt and Kieran Lugsden, who have both played for the first team, the article ends with a note that the Alty Youth team, "being a self-funding unit, are looking to attract sponsors". Anyone who can help should ring the club on 928-1045.
