    YOUTH TEAM PRAISED

Speaking after Monday's FA Youth Cup game at Barnsley, Alty first-team manager Graham Heathcote expressed his, and the club chairman's pride in the performance at Oakwell. He felt that the team gave a very good account of themselves but were up against an impressive Academy side from a full-time league club. Graham's congratulations were also conveyed to Youth team manager George Heslop and coaches Neil Thomason and Mal Bailey.

    YOUTHS LOSE AT BARNSLEY

Altrincham Youth gave a good account of themselves at Oakwell last night in the FA Youth Cup but went down to a 4-0 defeat. It could have been different if, at 2-0, Alty had converted either of two chances just before the interval. Then, early in the second half, Kieran Lugsden won a penalty but drove the spot-kick over the bar. Ironically it was Barnsley's Simon Heslop who scored the two second-half goals which finally undid Alty manager George Heslop's team.

    Report here.

The Altrincham & District FA youth side, entirely comprising Altrincham FC players, lost 2-1 at Congleton today to Macclesfield FA Youth in the District Cup. Alty's goal came from Josh Collins. For many Altrincham players it was the fourth game in a week. Report here.

ALTRINCHAM & DISTRICT FA YOUTH 2 CHESTER & DISTRICT FA YOUTH 3

Andy Thorpe (pictured left) headed Altrincham's first goal and Kieran Lugsden netted the second to put Alty 2-1 up after 50 minutes before a penalty levelled the scores. HONOUR FOR BARRY

Alty Youth goalkeeper Barry George has been selected as the fully-sighted keeper for the England Partially-Sighted team who are preparing for a fixture at the FA training centre at Lilleshall this weekend. Sadly this means that Barry, who also has Cheshire FA representative honours, will be unavailable for the FA Youth Cup match on Friday against Pickering Town at Moss Lane (7.45pm). However, in Clint Walker, who played in Alty Youth's 3-0 win over Morecambe recently and Tom Read, Altrincham Youth have other excellent goalkeeping resources.

    FROM THE OTHER SIDE

The Radcliffe Borough official website has a brief summary of last night's match against Alty Youth. It also includes pen pictures of the Boro' Youth squad which state that goalkeeper Greg Hall "is also a competent mid-fielder". This would explain why he spent the last 15 minutes last night playing in midfield after handing over his keeper's journey to an outfield team-mate.

    ALTY SQUEEZE THROUGH

Altrincham Youth beat Radcliffe Borough Youth 4-3 after extra-time in last night's FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round at Stainton Park.

    Match report here.

Alty now have a bye as their 1st Qualifying Round opponents Louth United have withdrawn, so Altrincham will be at home to Chadderton or Pickering Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round. If Alty win that, Barrow or Frickley Athletic or Hallam or Pontefract Collieries are the opponents in the 3rd Qualifying Round at Moss Lane.

    17 August 2003

    KINGSLEY

The disappearance of Kingsley United, champions in 2001-02 of the NWYA Premier Division in which Alty Youth play, is partly explained by the Non-League Paper which says that "Kingsley United under-18s [are] this season forming the basis of Southport's reserve team". Kingsley's manager is now reserve team assistant at Haig Avenue.
