MATCH REPORT

Alty made two changes to the starting line-up from Wednesday's FA Youth Cup marathon; Clint Walker replaced Will Allman in goal and Josh Collins came in to replace David Neville who was on holiday. Luke Killeen came onto the bench having missed part of the start of the campaign.

South Sefton had lost 5-3 at Prestwich last week whilst Alty had drawn their opening league match.

Left: Steve Lunt wheels away (left) after scoring the opening goal.

Sefton had the first chance of the game when Steer shot wide from a good position after neat approach work by Reece and Millington. Sefton also soon won the game's first corner. However, from a break to the other end, Kieran Lugsden's cross from the right kissed the top of the Sefton crossbar (6 mins). Alty's improvement continued as Steve Lunt battled well to get in a shot, from an off-balance position, which went just wide from the left of goal (9 mins). A neat back-heel from Lunt then gave Collins a shooting chance but Josh's well-hit effort went narrowly wide (17 mins). However, Alty did soon score when, from Kelvin Lugsden's pass, Steve Lunt took the ball on and half-volleyed it into the net from a left-central position (19 mins). Following the restart Kieran Lugsden shot narrowly wide (20 mins) as Alty underlined their control at this stage. A fine move up the right involving Kelvin Lugsden and Steve Lunt soon followed (24 mins).

Right: Kieran Lugsden scores number two.

Sefton responded with a shot from Dowd which cleared the bar before a Matt Tooth free-kick for a foul was caught by keeper Millington. The other Millington in the Sefton side then won them a corner which clipped the top of the crossbar, when taken by Reece (29 mins). Steve Lunt then raced through at the other end but his shot was too high (32 mins). Another good move up the right from Chalmers, Kelvin Lugsden and Kieran Lugsden followed before Sefton's Chapman limped off to be replaced by Reed (34mins).

A punt from Walker, who looked comfortable and was well protected by his back-four throughout, found Kieran Lugsden, who in turn found Steve Lunt. His neat, flicked shot was well saved (36 mins). Next, Stevie Taylor had to clear the ball off the Alty line from Steer and this proceeded a jittery minute or two in the otherwise composed Alty midfield/defence. Normal service was restored when Bailey swept up an attack well before Collins got in a header at the keeper from a cross from the right by Lunt (40 mins). Kieran Lugsden next set up Lunt for a shot, which went wide. Another good attack, initiated by Chalmers's fine pass then followed from which a corner resulted. Sefton responded by winning themselves a corner just before the interval from which Millington had a clear shot but put the ball wide (45 mins).

Left: Adam Douthwaite wins a header as Michael Bailey looks on.

Following Matt Tooth's throw, Steve Lunt found Josh Collins whose cross found Kieran Lugsden; his volley went inches wide (47 mins). Soon Chalmers played in Lunt whose effort was saved (52 mins). Alty continued to attack and from Lunt's cross from the left Kieran Lugsden headed firmly home but the referee ruled that Lunt had crossed from beyond the goal-line. Then when Stevie Taylor was fouled, Chalmers's free-kick from 25 yards was only narrowly over the bar. Bailey then broke up two successive probes by Sefton before Collins, picking up a cross from the right, returned the ball into the box where Kieran Lugsden reacted quickly to knock the ball home and made it 2-0 (58 mins).

Right: Lewis Chalmers and Matt Tooth in action.

After this, Alty won a corner which Chalmers headed wide and then Sefton brought on substitute Colvin (59 mins). However, play then stopped as the referee was called over by the linesman who was patrolling the end which Alty were attacking. He had seen something deep in the other half of the pitch which led the referee to wave a yellow, probably at Sefton's number seven, and then produce a red card for Alty's Chalmers. The offence was alleged to be head butt (60 mins).

Ten-man Alty soon broke away again but Lunt's shot was saved (71 mins) before another Alty corner followed, taken by Taylor. Collins then did well on the left and from his efforts Lunt won a corner, which the keeper tipped onto the bar. Alty continued to dominate despite their loss of a player before Sefton brought on another sub, Donnelley. A Sefton corner soon followed (79 mins) and then Alty brought on Paul Breidenbach for Kieran Lugsden (80 mins). As the game drifted towards its end, Sefton's Steer earned himself a lecture but as he continued his mouthing after this, the official had no alternative but to send him off (84 mins). An Alty corner soon followed but Lunt was caught offside. Another Alty corner followed before Millington reacted angrily to a foul by Bailey (89 mins). However, the home team kept their heads and rode out the final minute to record a deserved win.
