The latest addition to the Reserves' squad is Kirk Hilton (23), a Flixton-born former Man. United Reserves' left-back who has been in the USA recently. Other recent newcomers are brothers Michael and Ashley Brown.

    RESERVES MAKE IT A DOUBLE

As Alty were beating Barrow at Moss Lane, Alty Reserves were winning their first game of the season up at Holker Street by four goals to two. The Barrow forum says that "after going 1-0 up, the [Barrow] reserves lost 4-2 at Holker Street this evening. The score was all square at 1-1 at half time before a further 3 goals in the second half from Altrincham sealed the points. Patrick Staunton snatched one back late on".
    26 September 2004

    BARROW

Barrow's Holker Street Newsletter says that "The reserves return home on Tuesday night to what will hopefully be a good crowd when they take on Altrincham Reserves. This will be another opportunity for Barrow public to see the under 18 and reserves players perform their well drilled passing game that is winning admiration of opposing managers this season. Manager Dave Staunton, looking forward to the game, said he believes the mix of players from the under18 side and last season's reserve team players is beginning to gel into a good side, he now hopes the side can build on their last two performances with a home victory".

    FIXTURES

Neil is now trying to re-arrange the match for next Wednesday. This Friday (27th) Altrincham Reserves are away to Morecambe.

Alty Reserves can take heart from the fact that although Workington's first team played as their Reserves and beat Alty 6-1 at the start of the season, the Workington first team beat Spennymoor United in the UniBond League 5-0 and Matlock Town 4-0 in their subsequent games.

    TOUGH TEST

The Workington News & Star makes clear why Workington fielded such a strong team against Alty Reserves. It says that "Workington had to cancel a training session last week because of floods at St Aidans, and that followed he postponement of last Monday’s final pre-season friendly at Chester-le-Street... [so, their manager] played his first-team squad in the Lancashire League fixture at Borough Park against Altrincham Reserves". Workington's first team's season does not begin till this weekend.

    ALTY PLAYERS

Alty Reserves' manager Neil Brown has kindly promised to send the website some brief player profiles of the Altrincham Reserves side of 2004-05. In the meantime, some basic details and photos of squad members are here.

    LEIGH VENUE

Leigh RMI report that "In order to ensure the playing surface at Hilton Park is at its best it has been decided that the reserve team will play the majority of their home matches at Robin Park, Wigan". This is next to the JJB Stadium in Wigan.

CHEADLE TOWN 0 ALTRINCHAM RES. 1

Neil Brown's Altrincham Reserves ran out deserved winners of this pre-season friendly at Cheadle Town. The deciding goal came after 62 minutes when a ball into the box from the right by Levi Kennedy evaded the Town keeper and went into the net. Cheadle missed a penalty later in the game but a strong second half performance ensured that Alty would run out the winners.

    Match report here.

Above: Levi Kennedy (7) and midfielder Adayo fight for the ball.

    OPPONENTS CLASH

Altrincham Reserves lost to a strong Stockport County side last week and they meet Cheadle Town on Saturday. Meanwhile Cheadle Town beat a Stockport County side 2-1 in their annual friendly recently - but how strong a County side it was remains unclear. Directions to Cheadle are on the friendlies' page.

    ALTY KEEPER MOVES ON

Radcliffe Borough report that "Young keeper Barry George (right) who played the last 20 minutes on Saturday against Manchester United, will play the full 90 minutes tonight when Southport visit Stainton Park for the last home pre-season game. George who last season was with the Altrincham Youth Team has recently been playing with the Boro's Youth Team was called up on Saturday as Danny Hurst came off with a groin strain". Barry is also the Cheshire FA Youth keeper and had been expected to be involved with Alty Reserves this season.
    27 July 2004

    STRONG OPPOSITION

The Stockport County website confirms that the strong County side which beat Alty Reserves on Saturday (see below) included Chris Williams, Michael Byrne and Bailey, who have all been in the first team, as well as McLachlan, a first teamer returning from injury. Striker Matt Bailey, who spent a couple of months on loan to Alty last season was also in the County side. The site says- "County Youth ran riot against Altrincham Under-20s at Manor Farm on Saturday morning with a convincing 7-1 victory. Chris Williams opened the scoring from the penalty spot before goals from Michael Byrne (2), Danny Newby, Danny Meadowcroft, Paul Douglas and Danny Campbell completed the rout. County: McEwen, Wonfor, Reilly, Allen, Meadowcroft, Lord, C Williams, McLachlan, Bailey, Byrne, Newby. Subs (all used): Hadfield, Pearson, Douglas, Brownhill, Yoffe, Campbell". Alty face a more reasonable challenge on Saturday when they travel to Cheadle Town (3pm).
    25 July 2004

    FIRST GAME

Altrincham Reserves, newly reformed this summer, had their first game yesterday at Stockport County's training ground in Timperley. The County side included nine professionals and even one first-teamer, returning from injury, whilst Alty were without several of their defensive squad members, including Adam Douthwaite who was ill. Despite its being their first game together, Alty held County well in the early stages but the loss through injury of another defender during the game, (captain James Marsden), helped Stockport to a 7-1 win with three late goals. Nevertheless, manager Neil Brown, as well as first-team boss Graham Heathcote who watched the early part of the game before travelling to Chorley, were encouraged by a good performance by their weakened side against a strong League club outfit.

The Alty Reserves' squad for the game was:

  • Goalkeepers: Steve Everall, Steve Saha
  • Right-back: James Marsden (captain)
  • Centre-backs: Chaka Shaw, George Melling (vice-captain)
  • Left-back: Matt Tooth (seen, right, last season playing for Alty Youth)
  • Central midfield: Lewis Chalmers, Stevie Taylor
  • Right wing: Levi Kennedy
  • Left wing: Kieran James
  • Strikers: Rico Richards, Jamie Almond
  • Subs: Otis Thomas, Rio Nelson, Paul Monaghan, Adam Douthwaite (ill), Duanne Lynsey.

Alty Youth watchers will recognise many of the above names as players who have progressed through George Heslop and Neil Thomason's Altrincham youth team over the last few seasons.

Neil and Altrincham FC would like to thank JFC Sports of Hyde for their generous sponsorship of the reserves' tracksuits. The Reserves travel to Cheadle Town next Saturday and with no first-team friendly that day, hope for some good support from Altrincham fans at that game (k.o. 3pm, directions on the Friendlies page). The Reserves' League season kicks off on 14 August with a long trip to Workington.

    COMING UP

Alty Reserves have the following fixtures in pre-season:
  • Cheadle Town (A) - Saturday 31 July, 3pm.
  • Wythenshawe Town (A) - Saturday 7 August, 3pm

Directons to these fixtures are on the Friendlies page - spectators very welcome! It is also hoped to arrange a match against Broadheath, to be played at Clay Lane, Timperley.

The Reserves will play their home games at Abbey Hey, where the first team is playing its first friendly this Saturday (3pm). In addition to the Reserves' friendly at Cheadle Town, which has already been announced, Neil's team will also be playing at Wythenshawe Town FC on 7 August (3pm). Their ground, which is the home of Alty's Youth team, is at Timpson Road, behind the car park at Tesco's Baguley store. The Reserves' manager will be Neil Brown, a much respected local coach, who has a good reputation for developing young talent at Fletcher Moss Rangers and elsewhere.

As well as using new players, a number of former Altrincham Youth players are believed to be interested in returning to play for the Reserves.
