PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY HELPS LADIES' PREPARATIONS

Manager Keith Edleston reports on his Altrincham FC Ladies pre-season game.

"The Ladies took on AFC Oldham in a hastily arranged preseason fixture as their opponents had cancelled on them late in the day. So, on Sunday morning we made the short trip over to Heywood Sports Centre, near Bury. Our squad had some new debutants and it was a good time to 'blood them in' against higher (Div. 1) opponents.

We kicked off the game and it was obvious from the start it was going to be a tough game but we settled down and, on 27 minutes, a flowing move down our right saw Chloe Alsop put a lovely ball through for Brogan Walsh and she fired in a shot from outside the box, which flew into the net to make it 1-0.

We had settled down into the game and were playing some nice football but the game still was finely balanced with Oldham also playing some good stuff. Just on the stroke of half time a shot from their centre-forward caught in the wind then hung and dropped into the net leaving Lizzie a bit 'miffed' as she had the shot well covered!

Half time 1-1

We then decided to change the team around to let more players gain some valuable game time. We started the second half kicking into a strong wind that had arrived and Oldham picked up the pace. It was getting a lot harder and Oldham, showing their First Division strength and guile, were knocking the ball around well. On 56 minutes they scored from a ball which split our defence and then, on 59 minutes, a shot was saved by Lizzie, who managed to push the ball out but, then, we didn't react quickly enough and the striker followed up to make it 3-1.

We decided to make some more changes and experiment with some players playing in different position, in preparation for our new season and the game settled down into a end to end affair. But Oldham saw the game out to finish 3-1 winners.

Squad: Lizzie Brereton, Sam Briggs, Louise Edleston, Caroline Moran, Sarah McManus, Heather Scott, Gail Simpson, Beth Crellin, Kathryn Mcintrye, Brogan Walsh, Chloe Alsop, Hayley Macardy, Sam Jones, Becki Hailes, Kate Rawthore (and Chloe Brereton injured but made the journey as a supporter, well done Chlo!)

All in all, a great game of football for us. We learnt from it, players got game time and the debutants settled in well. A big thanks go to Becky from AFC Oldham for giving us the chance to play and their players and staff for making us feel very welcome; hope you go on and have a great season Ladies. For us, one more training session to go then the big kick off this Sunday when the Ladies take on Blacon Youth at Beech Fields in Timperley, 2 pm ko. Hope to see you there!"
