    ALTRINCHAM FC YOUTH

It was a successful season for both the Altrincham FC under-18s Youth team and the under-17s. The Under-18s were runners up in the Premier League of the NW Youth Alliance and also did well in the FA Youth Cup, reaching the second round. The under-17s, meanwhile, won the NWYA President's Cup.

To mark their achievements, there will be a Presentation Evening on Friday (23 May) at 7 p.m. in the Noel White Suite. During the evening the players will be given an insight into the new Altrincham FC Development Squad and awards will be to players of both the NWYA Premier Division side and the First Division side. Of course, the main award of the evening is the James Black Trophy, presented by James's parents in memory of their son who was an ardent Alty supporter until his untimely death.

    LAST GAME POSTPONED

Sunday's final league game for Altrincham Youth was called off a quarter of an hour after it should have started, owing to a couple of small waterlogged patches on the pitch. It will now be for the NW Youth Alliance League to decide whether the game is to be played in midweek at Abbey Hey's Knutsford base of Egerton Boys' Club, or whether it will be declared a draw. If it is a draw, that would be sufficient to give Altrincham second place in the Premier League table.

    NEIL THOMASON CUP

Altrincham ended Chester's long unbetaen run recently but Chester FC report that they "completed another milestone in a memorable season, as they became the first Chester FC side to win the Neil Thomasson Cup. Two Tom Batten penalties were enough for the Blues to see off a full-time Abbey Hey side, based at Knutsford College...

The Youth Team’s attention now turns to the final game of the season, the North West Youth Alliance Open Cup final against our own Chester Colts side who have enjoyed an impressive Second Division season, winning their own league and cup double, guaranteeing a Chester FC treble, one way or another".

The Neil Thomason Cup is named after the late Altrincham FC youth coach who helped manager George Heslop for a number of years, but sadly died at a young age.

    FROM THE OPPOSITION SIDE

Chester FC report that "Chester FC Youth edged ever closer to lifting the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division trophy with a 4-1 home win against a strong Altrincham outfit.

The Blues were forced to come from behind, with four second half goals handing the Young Seals victory. Goals from Man of the Match Joe Williams, Stephen Wilson and Tom Batten gave the Blues the three points to extend their lead at the top of the league.

It was the visiting side who began the stronger of the two teams as Chester struggled to produce the football that had seen them undefeated in 22 competitive games this season... Altrincham set the tempo and dictated how the game was run early on. Adam Garner headed off the line from a corner to prevent the Blues falling behind before Garner was then penalised for a tackle inside the area, with the referee awarding a penalty despite Chester’s appeals. Ryan Neild was sent the wrong way as the penalty was converted and Altrincham took the lead...

A pleasing victory for the Blues, showing impressive character to come from behind in the second half and come away with a cushion between them and their opponents".

    SKRILL NORTH NEWS

The Boston Target says that "Dennis Greene expects Kyle Dixon to return to Boston United after the on-loan midfielder was recalled by Notts County.

The Pilgrims had agreed to extend the 19-year-old’s loan until the end of the season, but a midfield injury crisis at Meadow Lane meant he was needed by Magpies boss Shaun Derry".

ALTY'S FIVE HELP CHESHIRE TO EIGHT

Altrincham FC contributed five players to the Cheshire FA team which trounced Lincolnshire 8-3 last weekend. The Cheshire County FA reports that its youth team "moved to within three points of table toppers Durham FA in the Association of Northern Counties Youth Competition after thrashing Lincolnshire FA at Vauxhall Motors’ Rivacre Park.

Jack Mason, Louis Potts and John Dawson all scored a brace with Joe Woolley and Callum Woods adding a goal apiece as Cheshire ran riot. The result comes at the perfect time, acting as a real confidence boost as the team prepare for their FA County Youth Cup Quarter Final against Devon FA next Saturday... Three goals in as many minutes saw Cheshire race into a five goal lead. [Alty's] Potts started off the madness, finishing smartly to make it four, Woolley added a fifth after Woods saw a penalty saved and then Potts claimed his second showing calmness and composure to rifle past the Lincolnshire custodian.

A half-time a score line of 6-1" led to an 8-3 win "Although they had conceded three, it was almost a perfect performance by the Cheshire lads... If they play like they did here, there is every chance that come Saturday evening the team will be looking forward to the prospect of an FA County Youth Cup Semi Final"

Before Saturday's game Manchester County FA "announced their squad to face Cheshire in the third round of the FA County Youth Cup this weekend. Jamie Blood's side saw off Liverpool in an eagerly anticipated second round tie and will have their sights set on taking the County FA a step closer to a second consecutive final... UNHAPPY DAY

It was an unhappy day for the youth players of Altrincham FC as they went out of two competitions on Sunday.

The Under-17 team, playing as the Altrincham and District FA representative side, were three minutes from a place in the final of the Cheshire County FA's District Cup, as they led 2-1 at Mossley against Stalybridge & District FA. But a late equalizer meant that Mid-Cheshire FA clinched their place in the Final.

In an afternoon match at home to Morecambe "A" in the NWYA Neil Thomason Trophy, Altrincham FC Youth (under-18s) lost 2-5. (Report to follow).

From the other side Walsall have a balanced report on the game. Academy manager, Neil Woods, said "To be fair to our visitors, they stopped us playing in the opening exchanges of the second half, but we managed to get back into our stride... It was a pleasing performance in what was an awkward tie".

    YOUTH FIXTURE CHANGES

    • Sun. 17 Nov. NWYA Open Cup Second Round versus Bootle F.C. Youth. FIXTURE CHANGE AND INTERVIEWS

After its postponement last Sunday, the NWYA Open Cup match between Altrincham FC Youth and Bootle has now been rescheduled for next Sunday, 3 November at 1.30pm at the Hale Country Club, Clay Lane. The winners will meet Daisy Hill FC in the next round.

Kevin Thompson's Alty & Sale Sport has interviews with Alty Youth manager George Heslop and five-goal scorer Max Pouncey, following the 10-3 FA Youth Cup win over Nostell Miners' Welfare last week.

    27 October 2013

    GAME OFF

Although 99% of the pitch at Clay Lane was perfectly playable for Sunday afternoon's NWYA Open Cup match between Altrincham FC Youth and Bootle, the match officials were unhappy with a small patch of muddy grass about five yards away from the corner flag on the by-line. As a result, after much deliberation, the match was postponed for fear that a player might slip and injure himself in the affected area.

But whilst there was no competitive football to be seen, manager George Heslop and his assistant, Paul Jones, took advantage of the lack of action to demonstrate to their players the art of playing as a sweeper, whilst George also demonstrated his all-round sporting prowess by also taking to the field with a javelin (see adjacent images).

George showed Paul the sweeper's art...

    ...before Paul emulated him.

This small patch caused the postponement...

... so George decided to try another sport.

GOALS GALORE IN FA YOUTH CUP

Altrincham FC Youth won their FA Youth Cup Third QR match 10-3 on Thursday night against Nostell MW from Wakefield. The Altrincham scorers were Max Pouncey (5), Kane Hughes (3), Rob Gilroy and Tom Clarke. Altrincham now entertain Wrexham in the next round.

Wrexham, report that in the last round, "Three second half goals from Danny Reynolds, Matty Hammons and an own goal, swung the result in Wrexham's favour. We now head to...Altrincham... while the second round draw has also come through and the winners of our side of the tie will be away to either Port Vale or Walsall.

While Selby put up a spirited display, thwarting Wrexham's attacking ambitions, it was deserved win for the Welshmen, who enjoyed the vast majority of possession throughout the 90 minutes, but took until nearly the hour mark to breakdown the visitors' resistance. Wrexham: John Hodgin, Aaron Simpson, Jake Doran, Ross White, Jon Smith; Iwan Cartwright, Matt Hammons, Ross Weaver; Richard Harvey-Davies (Jake Phillips 70), Dan Reynolds, Jack Davies. Subs: Adam Whitlock, Daniel Roberts, Peter Hope, James Papirnyk".

Alty Youth and Wrexham previously clashed, at the Racecourse, in the FA Youth Cup in October 2001, with the Welshmen winning narrowly, 2-1.

Alty's first-team management will be particularly interested to see if the club's youth team can reach the next round as both hail from Walsall and Lee Sinnott was manager at Port Vale.

ALTY PROGRESS IN FA YOUTH CUP

Four well-taken goals against Vauxhall Motors ensured that Altrincham FC Youth advanced to a Third Qualifying Round match in the FA Youth Cup against Nostell Miners' Welfare (from near Wakefield) in two weeks' time. But the visitors hit the woodwork three times so could rightly feel unfortunate at the margin of the final score.

It all started when a good ball forward from David Brown prompted an interchange between Louis Potts and Max Pouncey, with Potts firing home well inside the thrid minute of the match. Vauxhall responded with an equalizer after 18 minutes through Hughes's header.

In the 56th minute Alty captain, Spencer Cunliffe expertly lobbed the keeper from fully 50 yards out on the right flank, before an impressive volley from Matt Todd made it 3-1 in the 68th minute. Cunliffe completed the scoring when a slick interchange of passes opened up Vauxhall, nine minutes from time. Report to follow.

Therefore, today's team was drawn from the Club's under-17s' squad and was captained by centre-back Sam Heathcote, son of former Alty player and manager, Graham Heathcote. The District FA overcame a lacklustre first-half performance to win comfortably in the game, which was played at Trafford FC on Sunday afternoon.
