    YOUTH TEAM AWARDS

In the Noel White Suite on Friday night, the Altrincham FC Youth team received their end of season awards. Manager George Heslop briefly summarised the season before announcing the three awards of Clubman of the Year, Manager's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year to, respectively, Alex Murphy, Tom Bailey and Marcus Baxby. Altrincham's first-team boss Graham Heathcote made the above presentations, stating that like George, he had not expected his first-team to win anything last season but, unlike the youth team, the first team had fulfilled his expectations!

George revealed that he had not expected this year's squad to win anything in 2006-07 so he was delighted to be proved wrong when, representing the Altrincham and District FA, the lads had won the Cheshire County FA District Youth Cup. In fact, it was the first time in the competitions history that Altrincham FA had lifted the Cup in successive years. Norman Sherriff was a very welcome guest and, on behalf of the Altrincham & District FA, he presented the team with their District Cup medals.

Finally, captain Tom Barclay, with Jim Vince senior made presentations to Hannah, the youth team physio and to Jenny Heslop, who worked hard to keep the kit in pristine condition throughout the season, and your website correspondent was taken aback to receive a welcome gift of a pen with which to make next season's match reports! A presentation was also made by the club to Julieann Gresty and Hannah who had assisted the District side with their physiotherapy skills.

Above: Tom Bailey, Manager George Heslop's Player of the Year.

Above: Marcus Baxby, the Players' Player of the Year

George Heslop revelaed that for 2007-08 he would be emulating the first team in having three training sessions a week, starting from 1st July and that he had already arranged three full games in pre-season against the Manchester County FA, Ashton Town and Congleton Town youth sides. In addition the Altrincham Youth side would again take part in the international youth tournament held at Manchester University's playing fields and would also host a friendly against a USA touring side. Through this pre-season schedule George and his assistant Tony Spilsbury would reduce the 92 applicants for the youth team to a reasonable-sized squad for 2007-08 season.

    YOUTH NIGHT

Tonight at Moss Lane (7.30pm) is the annual Youth Team Presentation Night in the Noel White Suite.
    31 May 2007

    YOUTH NEWS

Altrincham Youth manager George Heslop has announced two pre-season friendlies:
  • Sunday 15 July at 10am at Salford City Sports Complex (not Moor Lane - directions to follow!); Manchester County FA v Altrincham FC Youth
  • Saturday 21 July at 12 noon at Blessed Thomas Holford School, Altrincham; Altrincham FC Youth v Dearborn United Youth (Michigan, USA). Afer the match the visitors from the USA will be guests of Altrincham FC at the first-team friendly against Rotherham United at Moss Lane (3pm).

George Heslop also hopes to enter the Altrincham Youth side once again in the Umbro International Tournament, which takes place in Manchester each summer. However, with George not fully mobile yet because of his infected toe, and with coach Tony Spilsbury unavailable due to work commitments, entry into the competition is dependent on George finding a volunteer to help him with the event over its four days from Wednesday 25th to Saturday 28th July. If you can help, please contact George on 0161 718-0624.

George would also be grateful for any sponsorship of the Altrincham FC Youth team for the coming season, so if you can help in this way, please ring George on the above number.

The NW Youth Alliance in which Altrincham FC play their youth team league games is expected to expand next season as six new clubs have applied for election. The teams are Ashton Town, Ashton Athletic B, Bury Amateurs, Curzon Ashton, Formby and Nantwich Town. However, Euxton Villa have resigned from the league.

The Neil Thomason Trophy is named after the former Alty Youth coach who sadly died at a young age a couple of years ago and is therefore a prize which Altrincham FC is very keen to win.

GAME OFF AS DAISY HILL PULL OUT

Altrincham FC Youth's fixture at home this Sunday to Daisy Hill has been cancelled after the Westhoughton-based side withdrew from the League today. Daisy Hill had been struggling to raise sides in recent weeks. Alty had yet to play Daisy Hill away as well (on April 22), so now lose two fixtures due to their resignation. The next scheduled game for Altrincham FC Youth is now a week on Sunday (25th), away to Leigh RMI "A".

Front row: Anthony Davies, Kieran Raynes, Tom Bailey and Danny Browne.

Altrincham & District FA's Youth team, entirely made up of Altrincham FC Youth team players, today (Sunday) won the Cheshire County FA District Youth Challenge Cup by the biggest margin in the competition's history, 6-0, away to Stalybridge & Hyde District FA at Stalybridge Celtic's Bower Fold ground. Alty could well have trailed at the interval as they played uphill and into the wind. But following the goalless first 45 minutes, a commanding second half performance saw them record two goals apiece form Anthony Davies and Rick Crawford and one each from Michael Simcock and Michael Howe. The last two goals were extraordinary; firstly, Anthony Davies hit a quick frekick for Alty's fifth goal, reminiscent of Ryan Giggs's controversial effort for Manchester United v Lille, whilst Michael Howe's goal was scored directly from a freekick which he took from two yards inside his own half on the right touchline. Altrincham retained the trophy, which they had won last year, the first time they had done so in the competition's history. It was the third time they had won the District Cup in the last seven seasons. For Anthony and Rick their brace of goals apiece were ideal birthday presents as Anthony was 18 on the day of the game, whilst Rick celebrated his 18th birthday last Friday. The age of the Altrincham youth management duo, George Heslop and Tony Spilsbury, is not recorded!

Match report here and more pictures to follow tomorrow...

    YOUTHS UP FOR THE CUP

On Sunday (11th), why not come along and support Altrincham & District FA Youth team (which is made up entirely of Altrincham FC Youth team players) as they contest the Cheshire County FA District Youth Challenge Cup Final at Stalybridge Celtic's Bower Fold? The game kicks off at 2pm. The District Cup was first awarded in 1949 and since then the Altrincham & District FA has won it seven times. Sunday's game is Altrincham's fourth District Cup Final in seven seasons and of the previous three, Alty have won twice. This year is the first time since 1970 that Altrincham have contested successive finals but they have never won it twice in succession, a feat that was achieved last season with a 3-1 win over Stockport FA..

The Stalybridge side is likely to include many of Celtic's Academy players though some will be ruled out by the under-18 rule, as the Academy side is for under-19s. On the Altrincham side both Rico Colulo and Joe Steenson are barred from playing as they have already represented the Manchester FA side this season.

Pictured, above, is last season's victorious Altrincham side. Back row: Rick Crawford, Kieran Raynes, Danny Chebrika, Danny Browne (partly hidden), Anthony Davies, Michael Risk, Dean White, Tom Barclay, Andy Keogh, Ben Deegan, Hassan Zareh-Ourang, Lewis Bishop, Ashley McGrath (hidden). ALTY YOUTHS' COMEBACK

Above: Kieran Raynes (no.12 in blue) jumps the highest as Alty attack the Leigh RMI goal.

Alty Youth hosted Leigh RMI today in the quarter final of the Neil Thomason Memorial Trophy, a competition named after Alty's late youth team coach. When Alty went three goals down after 38 minutes, all looked to be over for them. But with the benefit of playing with the wind a strong second half performance, prompted from midfield by Danny Browne, led to Altrincham netting four times by the 73rd minute to clinch a place in the semi-finals. After an own goal by Leigh, the Alty scorers were Tom Bailey, with two, and Kieran Raynes. Alty now meet Prescot Cables or Daisy Hill or Salford City at home on 1 April in the semi-final.

    YOUTHS HIT FOR SIX

A disastrous 27 minutes, starting just before half-time saw Altrincham Youth go from a goalless scoreline to six goals behind at Woodley Sports on Sunday. And this was despite their hosts losing three players in the first half - two with hamstring pulls and the third with a forearm fracture. This 6-0 defeat was Alty Youth's heaviest for at least six years.

    YOUTH FARCE

Sunday's youth team game away to Morecambe was abandoned in farcicial conditions at Lancaster & Morecambe College. Though played on a supposedly "all-weather" pitch, the rain had been so heavy that it had standing water on it. Also, the crossbars were both the wrong, different height after vandalism, there were no corner flags and only two match officials. The game kicked off after a protest by Alty Youth team manager George Heslop. After just five minutes the wet pitch gifted Morecame a goal but five minutes later the referee abandoned the game. Altrincham now face the unwanted expense of travelling again to re-play the match.
    3 December 2006

Alty Youth lost 1-3 at home to Bootle this afternoon, after Tom Bailey had converted Michael Simcock's cross-shot from the right after 31 minutes to put Alty ahead. The Merseysiders were too strong for Alty in the second period and ran out comfortable winners. Report here..

    23 November 2006

    LAST TO FALL

Alty Youth's league rivals Morecambe Youth were the last survivors of the NW ALlied Trophies League left in the FA Youth Cup. But they found that "A spirited performance was not good enough against a very good Crewe side in front of over 500 spectators at Gresty Road... In time added on at the end of the first half Crewe went ahead after poor defending from a corner. The second half continued much as the first and it was only a matter of time before Crewe capitalised on their possession with further goals from the impressive Junior Brown, a brace from Nick Farquharson and one from Ajay Leitch-Smith. Paul Jarvis added a consolation for Morecambe but it was a case of too little too late".

    SHRIMPS PROGRESS

Had Altrincham progressed in the FA Youth Cup, they would have met Morecambe. Instead, "Dickie Danson's Morecambe Youth side has made history by overcoming a strong and resilient North Ferriby United to progress to the 2nd Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup for the first time in the club's history". After NFU had missed an extra-time penalty, Morecambe ran out 2-0 victors. "Morecambe now face Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road in the second round".

    ALTY F.A. WIN WELL

Altrincham & District FA Youth team, (all of whose players were from Altrincham FC), beat Mid-Cheshire FA 4-0 on Sunday at Winsford in the Cheshire County FA District Youth Cup, of which they are the holders. After a goalless first half, Alty's Tom Bailey hit a hat-trick, with Rick Crawford scoring the other goal. Alty have now won both their group stage games to date. However, they lost midfielder Michael Simcock to an injury which required hospital treatment. But the injury turned out to be bad bruising rather than anything more serious so he should be back in action soon. Next Sunday, Alty Youth travel to Worksop Town in the FA Youth Cup, k.o.3pm at Sandy Lane.

    4 October 2006

    YOUTH CUP

Altrincham Youth's FA Cup match at Worksop Town's Sandy Lane ground will be played on Sunday, 15th October, k.o. 3pm.

    HONOURS BRING INJURIES

Alty were honoured to have four players in the recent Cheshire FA Youth side but sadly two of them are now sidelined for perhaps a fortnight after being injured playing for the County. The injured duo are Anthony Davies and Michael Simcock, whilst Tom Bailey and Michael Howe also played. Michael Howe was then injured, last Sunday, in a league game so manager George Heslop faces a selection problem for next week's game.

    ALTY YOUTH 1 MARINE "A" YOUTH 2

Alty Youth lost 1-2, to a last-minute goal on Sunday. This website was prevented from filing a match report by the abject failure of Arriva buses, ironically the sponsors of Marine, (was it a plot?!), to run their Sale to Baguley service as scheduled on Sunday. Having waited almost an hour for two buses, neither of which came, your reporter gave up and went home! The Marine Forum has a brief report which says that after a goalless first half. Alty took the lead after 85 minutes but conceded twice in the last five minutes.

    RICHARD'S INJURY

A few days ago the website reported that last season's Alty Youth captain Richard Gresty, who also played for Alty Reserves and for the English Colleges XI, had broken his cheek bone in the Umbro Tournament last week. It now emerges that the injury (sustained playing for a Sale side ironically against the current Alty youth team), which came from an accidental elbow to the face was a serious one. An ambulance was summoned and Richard was given oxygen whilst still on the field. He was then taken to hospital where X-rays confirmed no less than 4 fractures to his cheekbone. He was kept in overnight and was to be operated on the next day. This was delayed, however, as following concussion, a full anaesthetic could have been dangerous. He now has to go back to hospital on August 11th when he will have a metal plate fitted to the bone (reconstructive surgery) and will be unable to play for approximately 6 weeks. All at Altrincham FC wish him a full and speedy recovery.

    UMBRO TOURNAMENT

Fielding a squad which was 18 months younger than many of its opponents, Altrincham FC Youth did very well to reach the quarter-finals of the Manchester Umbro International Football Festival last week. In the U-18 group, Alty finished joint top of their section in the group stage with 9 points from 4 games but were placed third on goal difference. However, they qualified for the quarter-finals as one of the top third-placed teams but this position gave them a difficult draw in the knock-out stage, against the eventual winners of the tournament Leek Town. The results were:

    Group matches

  • Sale Juniors 3 Altrincham 1
  • Altrincham 2 Blackrod Town 0
  • Altrincham 7 Real Caprice 2
  • Eagle Leisure 0 Altrincham 2

    Quarter Finals

  • Leek Town 2 Altrincham 0

Leek Town went on to win the competition.
