REPORT

Alty travelled to play Worksop Town with the prospect of the winners facing either Morecambe or Vauxhall Motors in the next round of the FA Youth Cup. Alty were without the injured Michael Simcock.

After Worksop had kicked off, Howe prompted Bailey to a good shot, which the keeper saved well (7 mins). Immediately, at the other end, Raynes got in an excellent tackle on Alder-Heaver. Alty almost took the lead when a foul on Browne gave Alty a freekick from 25 yards. Davies caught the keeper unawares but his well struck shot came back off the base of the post (8 mins). Alty wasted a corner kick and then Browne shot wide before Worksop won their first corner (14 mins). From this, Ryde fired over the bar. However the game was transformed five minutes later when Alder-Heaver was allowed too much space, 25 yards out in a central position and he fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net (19 mins).

Worksop now seized the initiative as they tried to exploit the skill of the mobile Alder-Heaver. Alty survived three corners in quick succession before Alder-Heaver beat two Alty defenders as he drifted across the front edge of the box before driving the ball just inside Bishop's right-hand post (27 mins).

Soon the impressive Alder-Heaver fed Bricknell for a fine volley which was caught by Bishop. Worksop were now winning most of the 50-50 balls and their centre-backs were eating up the aerial balls. Two Worksop corners followed and then Alder-Heaver seized on a mis-header to get clear but, this time, his ball control let the former Mansfield trainee down (33 mins). But in the final few minutes of the half, Alty showed some spark as Raynes had a shot blocked and then put together their best move of the half, as Bailey saw his effort, from Crawford's feed, come off the keeper to Browne, whose low shot was cleared off the line by a defender (44 mins).

Animated by the management's half-time talk, Alty showed a bit more endeavour in the early stages of the second half as, firstly, Baxby shot wide and, then, Crawford was jostled off the ball as he was about to shoot. Then Howe had a freekick well saved before a foul by Browne gave Worksop a freekick 20 yards out in a central position. Ward's kick got a deflection onto the upright and Johnson arrived just ahead of a defender to tap the ball home and make it 3-0 (53 mins).

Above: Worksop Town seal the FA Youth Cup match on Sunday. Their no.8's freekick has just hit the wall, wrong-footing Alty keeper Lewis Bishop. The ball struck the post and was put into the net by the incoming Worksop no.11 (left) to make it 3-0. For a report click here.

Soon, Alder-Heaver got free again but fell over his feet before Ward was booked for a bad challenge on Davies (55 mins). But the Worksop striker was on target soon after, forcing Bishop to beat the ball out (57 mins). Alty stemmed the tide with a corner (63 mins) but were not able to threaten a goal. However, Johnson became the second home player cautioned, when he fouled Davies (72 mins). Altrincham made a triple substitution as Barry, Burgess and Hogan replaced Roberts, Browne and Crawford (73 mins).

The changes had some effect as, first, Raynes fired over from 25 yards and then Alty won two corners. But Worksop wound down the clock with two substitutions, (82 and 86 minutes). Between these changes, Bishop made an unconventional save with his legs from Ward's 25-yarder. The final whistle soon went on a performance which Altrincham would prefer to forget. After a fairly bright start from the visitors, Alty had been comfortably beaten by a Worksop side for whom Sheffield FA striker Dave Alder-Heaver was outstanding in the first half. The club wishes Worksop good luck in the next round and thanks them for their hospitality. A very respectable crowd of 172 watched the game on a dull afternoon.
