ALTRINCHAM FC YOUTH (1) 4
SOUTH LIVERPOOOL YOUTH (0) 0

FA Youth Cup Second Round Qualifying match
played on Tuesday, 7 October, 2025 at 7.30pm

SUMMARY:

Altrincham took a 23rd minute lead when Raion Rowe took advantage of a Liverpool mis-pass across the face of their penalty area to drive a low shot past the flat-footed keeper.

The score remained 1-0 at the interval before another defensive mix-up by the visitors gifted Renshaw a second Altrincham goal (64 mins).

Three impressive saves inside a minute of frantic defending by Alty saw keeper Beddow maintain the two-goal margin intact before two late goals wound up the scoring at 4-0 to Altrincham.

First, Lavin's deft finish, following a left-wing freekick, made it 3-0 (83 mins) before Renshaw steered in a fourth goal in the ninetieth minute. Somehow, the referee found more than eight added minutes before he blew the final whistle.

BACKGROUND:

Heavy rain had caused the postponement of this match on the previous Friday. This rescheduled match, advertised as a 7.45pm kick of, actually started just after 7.30pm.

Watching the match was Phil Parkinson, as were first-team players James Gale and Tylor Golden.

The rules of the competition required this tie to be between under-18 sides.

REPORT:

The Merseysiders kicked off, toward Golf Road, and the sides exchanged unproductive moves before the hosts began to settle. Their first effort at goal came after 12 minutes when Watson got to the right bye-line and his cross resulted in difficult chance for Weston, whose hooked effort was saved comfortably.

Playing a passing game, in keeping with the first-team's ethos, Altrincham saw plenty of the ball but it was South Liverpool who gained the game's first corner (18 mins), after which Whewell got into the box but his shot was well blocked.

Soon, Alty did get in a shot themselves, by Weston, soon afterwards but his volley was wayward (22 mins).

However, the Robins were gifted the opening goal by an errant pass across the front of their own penalty area by the visitors. The ball went to Rowe and his low shot from just outside the box left the keeper flat-footed (23 mins).

The breakthrough goal lifted the Altrincham performance before the visitors Carroll was booked for a foul on Watson (27 mins).

However, South Liverpool were also proving to be a threat as Beddow was forced into a low save from Whewell (29 mins). Indeed, play went through an even spell as the game headed towards half-time. Alty did win a late corner (45 mins) but there was no addition to the score before the break.

South Liverpool made three changes at the interval as Barnett, Millett and Kinsella replaced Griffiths, Carroll and Abbott.

Altrincham started the second period on top without creating any clear chances.

Just before the hour, Altrincham made their first change as Obamwonyi replaced Rowe (58 mins) and, four minutes later came a second swap as Diomande gave way to Renshaw (62 mins).

It was not long before Alty doubled their lead and, as with their first goal, it owed a lot to an error by the visitors. On this occasion Liverpool goalkeeper Bate got into difficulties on the front edge of his box and the ball ran free for Renshaw to score easily (64 mins).

More changes followed as South Liverpool introduced Howes for Noon (67 mins). Despite being on top, Altrincham were not seriously threatening to score, with their next effort, from Renshaw, running easily to Bate's hands (70 mins).

They went closer soon afterwards when Weston shot narrowly wide .

Each side made a further swap on 76 minutes when Taafe replaced Watson for Altrincham and Bates came on for Alder for the visitors.

The next minute produced a quite remarkable performance by Alty keeper Beddow who, hitherto, had had little to do.

South Liverpool won a corner from an error by Antoniades. This produced three remarkable saves by Beddow, one after another; a block, a flying save and a tip away (78 mins).

And, inside two more minutes, Beddow was at it again, parrying a long shot (80 mins). Had any of these efforts beaten the Alty keeper the home side would have faced a worrying closing ten minutes to the game.

Alty finally got to the other end where Renshaw's ambitious 30 yarder cleared the bar (80 mins).

Paul Fay responded with a double change, bringing on Martin and Mattison for Mannion and Weston (81 mins). Mertin was soon on the wrong end of a foul for which the offender, Pearson, was booked (82 mins).

From the freekick from the left, Lavin's smart glancing touch found the net to make it 3-0 (83 mins). Renshaw almost made it four-nil when he won possession but his shot was saved and offside was flagged, in any case.

Murray picked up the Merseysiders' four yello (86 mins) before Martin went close (89 mins). However, it was soon 4-0 as Renshaw netted for a second time (90 mins).

With no fourth official on duty, the extent of added time to be expected was not evident to the spectators but few would have expected Mr Dolphin to allow play to run into the start of a ninth added minute but that is what happened before the final whistle sounded and ensured that it would be Altrincham travelling to Radcliffe in the next round, next week.

It had been a well deserved win but errors from the visitors had allowed the margin of victory to be more than it otherwise would have been.
