BACKGROUND:
Altrincham had accounted for two Cheshire neighbours (Chester FC and Warrington Town) in reaching this stage of the Cup at which league clubs joined the competition. Once again Paul Fay was in charge of the team, assisted by Ross Speight.
REPORT:
Altrincham kicked off towards the away end but play soon halted briefly for a knock to a Carlisle player. On the resumption, Carlisle started the better but they almost gifted an opener to Altrincham when keeper Randall and a defender got in mix up and the ball had to be hoofed clear. And moments later the rattled keeper's mis-control almost produced an own goal (10 mins).
In an eventful couple of minutes Carlisle then got to the other end but a cross from the left was put over the bar by O'Donoghue.
The visitors continued to look shaky at the back and another lapse allowed Raymond to get to the bye-line from where his cross went to the keeper.
However, the visitors were looking more potent at the other end of their team and won the game's first two corners in a space of three minutes (18 mins).
Alty had a close escape when a cross from their left led to a goal-line clearance from Cooper (20 mins). O'Donoghue then got into the box and Fallon had to make a good block with his legs (22 mins). Indeed Fallon was the busier keeper as he soon had to hold a Rigby cross (23 mins).
Alty's first real chance arrived in the 27th minute when Denise advanced on the right and from his pass, Shtyhlian's effort only narowly missed the target.
Overall, Carlisle were looking the bigger threat and it took a smart save from Fallon to save a well-hit 25 yarder from Hopper (34 mins). Shortly afterwards however, the Alty keeper had a narrow escape after dropping a ball from the Carlisle right (38 mins)
Carlisle were given another sight of goal when Fallon's kick went to Skinner but the keeper redeemed himself by blocking the resulting shot (41 mins).
Next, a foul on the lively Denise gave Alty a freekick on the right of the box but Raymond's free, kick came to nothing (43 mins).
So half-time arrived with the game goalless and the visitors having had more of the forward threat.

Alty produced their best move of the match so far when Suwareh and Denise setting up Howells who forced a save on the line (47 mins).
Two corners in a row from Carlisle relieved the early pressure and the next suggestion of a goal came in the 58th minute when a Carlisle shot went narrowly wide (58 mins).
Alty made the game's first change when Denise was replaced by Wood on the right flank (61 mins). Alost immediately the substitute got in a testing cross which the keeper gathered. Alty soon made their second change as Watson replaced Suwareh (63 mins).
The disruptions continued with Lambert replacing Carlisle's Lowes (64 mins).
Next, Howells got past Penny into the box but his shot was underpowered and went to Randall's arms (67 mins).
After that, Jarrold replaced Howells (69 mins) before Carlisle's Hodgson earned a corner.
Soon after an Alty corner had come and gone (75 mins), Altrincham took the lead when Jarrald advanced, left of centre, and finished efficiently past keeper Randall to give his side the lead (78 mins).
Smith now came on for Carlisle's Hodgson (79 mins) before each side won a corner. Then Alty almost wrapped up the game as a Raymond effort was blocked on the line, a corner resulting (87 mins).
The changes continued as Carlisle introduced Bell for Porter (88 mins). Carlisle now applied some late pressure and, with the match already into the second added minute, they equalised from close range through O'Donoghue following an advance on the left (90+2 mins).
Before the game went inot extra time, Jarrald was booked for a foul and, a minute later, Chapman followed the Alty man into the book (90+4mins). So, extra time was to follow.

After the visitors had already gone close Carlisle took the lead with a rising shot from Lambert from the right (92 mins). Alty were now on the back foot and the lively substitute Smith was instrumental in winning two corners (96 and 98 mins).
The Carlisle pressure got its reward when a Hopper shot deflected past Fallon to make it 1-3 (99 mins).
Alty responded with Powell replacing centre-back Cooper (100 mins). Things got worse for Alty as the impressive Rigby's rising shot made it 1-4 (102 mins).
So the extra-time interval left the score at 1-4. There was then a bizarre incident as a local fox raced up the main stand steps before the Foxes on the pitch replaced Hopper with Hatton (110 mins). Carlisle went close again and won a corner before Hatton got free in the Alty box but produced a disappointing shot.
The final change of personnel brought Edgar on to replace the captain, Skinner (115 mins).
Alty did keep going and won a final corner through Jarrold (120 mins) but the game was now well beyond the hosts.
It was a cruel way to go out of the Cup for Altrincham who had led until virtually the end of normal time. They had given a good account of themselves against an EFL club.
