RESERVES FINISH SIXTH

Above: Alty defend a second-half long throw by Crewe.

A win would have secured fourth place for Altrincham Reserves in their final match of the season, at the J Davidson Stadium, which was watched by the new first-team management duo of Phil Parkinson and Neil Sorvel. But, after Altrincham had taken a deserved 33rd minute lead through Faux, they conceded a second half equalizer when goalkeeper Jones did well to stop a close-range header from the visitors' centre-back but the same opponent netted the loose ball. As a result, Alty finished a very commendable sixth.

RESERVES LOSE EVENTFUL GAME

Whaley Bridge report on the first game of the season, against Altrincham FC Reserves. They say that "In one of the most dramatic games ever seen at Horwich Park, Whaley’s season kicked off last night with, what seemed like, an unlikely win against new boys Altrincham Town Reserves. Lack lustre in the first half Whaley were second best to a young, quick and incisive Altrincham team who deservedly took the lead after 15 minutes. Quick movement in and around the box culminated in a shot into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

Things didn’t change much before the break and seemed to go from bad to worse immediately after when Broome received his marching orders on 50 minutes and then Tom Street followed a couple of minutes later! Darryl immediately threw Tom Scorer into the fray to add his usual 100% shear ‘bull-dog’ determination and five minutes later young Will Bailey added a bit more impetus.

Now down to 9 men Whaley could either capitulate or fight for it; they chose the latter. On 60 minutes Lee Morris, with the keeper off his line, fired in a 40 yard shot that was tipped over only for new boy Jake Burnham to head in from the resulting corner. The crowd went mad!

1 – 1. Could Whaley hang on for the next 30 minutes? It seemed implausible with 9 men but now galvanised like never before the crowd started to believe they might actually get something out of the game, probably the most we could expect?

What no one expected was that the home team would secure all the points but that’s exactly what they did! With Gregory now 'involved' and running the show a through ball found Scorer on one of his typical forward forays, he laid a perfect ball off to Lee Morris who jinked sideways to create space to shoot across goal and into the far corner.

The crowd went utterly bonkers; unbelievable; ultimately a fantastic spectacle and credit to all that took part in a remarkable event".

RESERVES 0 1874 NORTHWICH 3

Right: Alty Reserves' defenders Tom Clarke and Will Foster keep an eye on former Alty striker Tom Bailey, in Saturday's match against 1874 Northwich.

In their first match of the pre-season against external opposition, Altrincham Reserves lost 3-0 to North West Counties' Premier Division side 1874 Northwich. The match took place at the Reserves' home ground, Egerton Sports Club, Knutsford, on their artificial pitch.

After a fairly even start, Northwich took a 25th minute lead when Danny Thomas headed home following a corner. An Alty defender had headed the ball away from goal but only into the path of the Northwich man whose header left keeper Jones with no chance.

Northwich's second goal arrived in similar fashion. A corner was nodded on by a team mate and Scott McGowan headed home (62 mins).

Alty enjoyed a late rally with, arguably, their most threatening attack coming with Leather's run which gained a corner. But the visitors wrapped up the match with a third goal seven minutes from time when a cross from the right was converted by their no.19, Jack woolley, one of half a dozen substitutes introduced to the game at half-time.

ALTRINCHAM RESERVES: 1. Andrew Jones, David Brown, 3. will Foster, 4. Ryan Barry, 5. Marcus Dibble, 6. Tom Clarke, 7. Ashley Leather, 8. Joel Swift, 9. Connor Sutton, 10. Jimi Folagbade, 11. Ioannis Stouppis. Subs: 12. Joe Faux, 14. Jude Oyibo, 15. Alex Robbins, 16. Kai ---, 17. Will Smith.
