BACKGROUND:
This was Altrincham's second game of the summer. They had last visited Erictan Park in summer 2023 when a hard pitch claimed a number of injuries for the Robins.
After the torrid summer weather, it was perhaps unsurprisng that the pitch was again an issue for this match
The match was competing with the World Cup semi-final between France and Spain on TV so a low crowd was the unsurprising outcome.
REPORT:
The hosts kicked off and inside three minutes had won the game's first corner.
Alty responded when Taylor and Barlow combined on the left to earn Alty their first corner (6 mins).
From this, Olson had a downward header cleared off the line.
Two more corners were won by the Robins by the 13th minute before Kirk fired off target from 22 yards (14 mins). At this point an injured Humbles had to be replaced by Owen German.
Three more Alty corners were accrued by the 25th minute.
German now went down injured at which point a hydration break was taken (27 mins). After the resumption Olson became the third Altrincham player to need treatment
With the game heading towards half-time, following a corner, a mass brawl broke out on the pitch after the home side had apparently reacted to an Olson challenge.
The players then left the pitch with the it being unclear whether an expedient early half-time break had been called by the referee but it transpired that the game had been abandoned, though the exact circumstances of that decision were unclear.
