SLOUGH TOWN (2) 2
ALTRINCHAM (0) 1

Emirates FA Cup Round One match
played on Saturday, 1 November, 2025 at 3pm

SUMMARY:

Altrincham bowed out of the FA Cup to lower ranked opposition at a damp Arbour Park. They can now concentrate on the league- and they certainly need to after a current run of eight league fixtures without a win.

In all competitions the picture is even bleaker. This was the TWELFTH successive ninety minutes in which Altrincham had failed to win. Their only victory in that sequence was an added time win at Harborough Town against a team reduced to ten men from the seventh minute and from four rungs lower down the pyramid.

This afternoon, after a fairly uneventful half hour, Slough Town took a 32nd minute lead following a corner which Greenidge nodded down for substitute Janneh to net from close range.

Inside a further five minutes, a cross from the left by Dyce was converted by Makowski to make it 2-0 (37 mins).

Surprisingly there were no changes to the misfiring Altrincham personnel for the second half.

Soon after the hour-mark, however, Alty did make three changes and, within two minutes, one of the substitutes, James Gale, scored to make it 2-1 (66 mins).

Alty played better after the changes but eight minutes from time Elliot Osborne was shown a red card for a foul challenge.

The score remained goalless as nine added minutes were announced, with Altrincham's ten men largely on the front foot. But whilst they picked up two late yellow cards Altrincham could not get an equaliser.

And post-match, unconfirmed reports said thet Tom Crawford had been shown a card after a post-match fracas, compounded by a heated exchange between Altrincham players and the travelling supporters.

TEAM NEWS:

Neil Gibson made two changes to the eleven which had started at Braintree in his first game in charge.

Gale and Crawford were dropped to the bench to accommodate Ward and Crankshaw but still only six names could be found for the substitute role. In contrast, Slough named all nine permitted substitutes.

Louie Fallon was given a vote of confidence as he started in goal despite the availability of former first choice keeper, Luke Hutchinson, who had completed his concussion-dictated lay-off.

Slough made three changes with Gidaree, Dyce and Myers coming in to the eleven.

Alty's injured list comprised five of their defensive resources in Ross, Sass-Davies, Reed, Barnes and Banks.

BACKGROUND:

The clubs had last met when they were in the Football Conference in 1996 and in their previous visits to Slough, Altrincham had never lost.

Today the clubs met with both of them badly out of league form. Slough had won just one game in their last six in National South and lay 21st, whereas Alty had not won in eight league fixtures, securing just two draws in the process.

This was Neil Gibson's second game in interim charge of Altrincham after earning a point at Braintree in his debut game a week earlier.

REPORT:

Following a minute's silence for the approaching Remembrance Day and a subsequent delay as Mr Swallow sorted out the multi-ball locations, Alty kicked off on Slough's 3G pitch, which was damp after earlier rain.

Although Drakes-Thomas had an early shot which went wide, it was Altrincham who won the first corner (8 mins).

With the breeze behind them, Slough were employing long-ball tactics as the match drifted on with little quality or incident of note.

A foul by Knowles had the unfortunate effect of Gidaree suffering a hamstring injury and he was subbed by Janneh, midway through the half (23 mins).

Almost immediately and, whether coincidentaly or otherwise, the giant Greenidge fouled Knowles from behind (24 mins).

A Reddin cross then earned Altrincham a corner (27 mins), followed a few minutes later by the hosts' first flag-kick (30 mins).

Following this, Alty counter-attacked and Knowles got into the box to record his side's first serious shot at goal, albeit his effort went straight to the home keeper (31 mins).

Play switched again and Fallon now saved an effort from Drakes-Thomas at the cost of a corner to The Revels. From this, Greenidge at the back post outjumped Cooper and his header located Janneh who scored with a volley to give his side the lead (32 mins).

And, just a few minutes later, 1-0 became 2-0 as a cross from the left was converted by Makowski as he got to the ball at the near post fractionally ahead of Fallon and a defender (37 mins).

Interim manager Gibson must have wondered what he had let himself in for as his side laboured against lower-ranked opposition.

Alty did then muster a corner, following a Crankshaw cross (41 mins) and, when Knowles was fouled soon afterwards, Janneh was booked (43 mins).

Alty now allowed Myers to run 25 yards unchallenged (44 mins) before Myers hit the side-netting as Alty continued to labour (45+1 mins).

The half ended with the hosts on top and they almost put the outcome beyond doubt as Drakes-Thomas shaved the post with Fallon beaten (45+3 mins).

Surprisingly, given the ineptitude of their first-half performance, Altrincham made no changes at the interval.

But after a long-shot from the hosts had gone wide (47 mins), Altrincham did display some better quality of play as Ward forced a save which produced corner (51 mins). Once again, the Alty corner came to nothing.

After two fouls in as many minutes, Jake Cooper found himself booked (53 mins). From Davies's resulting freekick, Fallon had to parry the ball away (55 mins). The nearest Alty came to a response was a high and wide effort from Ward (57 mins).

It almost got worse for the Robins when Slough had the ball in the net soon afterwards but the effort was ruled out for offside (58 mins).

Neil Gibson had seen enough and made a triple change with Crawford, Kosylo and Gale replacing Ward, Marriott and Crankshaw (64 mins). At the same time, Oshilaha replaced Dyce for the Rebels (65 mins).

Almost immediately Altrincham got themselves back into the game as the hosts were unable to clear the ball which rebounded to Gale who netted smartly from the left to make it 2-1 (66 mins).

It was not long before centre-back Cooper was subbed by winger Kirk, prompting a change of formation from a back-three to a back-four (71 mins).

Altrincham now enjoyed a better spell as they looked for a leveller, with Kosylo adding energy to the midfield.

Slough responded with a double substitution as Jordan Greenidge and Ojemen replaced Janneh and Myers (78 mins).

With Alty striving to find an equaliser, they suffered a major blow when Osborne was shown a stright red for a foul (82 mins). It was Alty's fifth red card of a troubled season.

Despite their deficiency of personnel Altrincham gained some forward momentum but could not create a serious chance before the 90th minute ended and nine added minutes were proclaimed.

It was Slough who won the only corner of the added time period before the game ended in indiscipline as Sassi and Kosylo were booked for dissent (90+9 mins). And in something of a post-match fracas it was reported that Crawford had been shown a card to add to his side's woes.

There also appeared to be some frank exchanging of views between some Altrincham players and the travelling supporters.

All is certainly not well at Altrincham FC as the club suffered its twelfth succesive game without a win in 90 minutes or in any game in that sequence against a side with eleven men on the pitch.

Next up is a Bonfire Night clash with Boston United, a former club of three of Altrincham's summer signings, Ward, Knowles and Gale.
