ALTRINCHAM (1) 1
RADCLIFFE FC (2) 2

Pre-season Friendly Match
played on Friday, 18 July, 2025 at 3pm
at Douglas, Isle of Man.

SUMMARY:

In this opening match of the Isle of Man Summer Festival of Football, Altirncham made the perfect start as James Gale scored inside the first minute. The goal resulted from a mix up by the Boro as new goalkeeper Halstead hesitated after coming out for the ball.#

Alty had the better of the opening stages but Radcliffe grew into the game and levelled in the 24th minute with a finely taken twenty-yard goal by Taylor which curled into the top corner.

Altrincham created little after the mid-half drinks' break and it was Radcliffe who took the lead in the 45th minute. Alty right-back Tylor Golden got into a mess as Taylor threatened, slightly to the right of goal and the ball fell conveniently for Anthony Dudley who took his chance well from close range.

The second half was largely a non-event with Altrincham largely on the back foot. Having brought on Fallon in goal at the interval, eight outfield changes were made in one go during the second period but to no positive effect.

TEAM NEWS:

For this second friendly of summer, just one trialist (Charlie Kirk) was with the Altrincham squad which made the trip across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man.

Alty were again without the injured Lewis Baines and Billy Sass-Davies, whilst a heel blister had added Olly Crankshaw to the unavailable list. But Louie Fallon was in the squad after he had not been involved at Warrington the previous Saturday.

There was a debut in goal for Altrincham's new loan signing, Luke Hutchinson.

BACKGROUND:

This was the first of two matches for Altrincham in the Isle of Man Summer Festival of Football. The game was effectively a semi-final with the winners to meet either Fleetwood Town or FC Isle of Man who were meeting the same evening.

REPORT:

At a sparsely populated Bowl in Douglas, Altrincham kicked off on a warm afternoon. Inside two minutes they were ahead when Radcliffe's newly signed, experienced keeer Halstead, hesitated after coming for a ball and, after it had bounced off a defender, it fell for James Gale to score his second goal in his second appearance for Altrincham.

Alty settled into a comfortable pattern before Radcliffe's first threat manifested itself in the form of Brad Jackson's wild shot well over the bar (8 mins).

There was no further goal threat over the following period in which Alty's left flank was their preferred route of attack as Reed and Kirk combined well on more than one occasion.

Things improved after 20 minutes when a Boro counter-attack saw Taylor feed Dudley, whose low shot was comfortably saved by debutant Hutchinson.

And it was to be Jon Taylor who struck a superb equaliser for Radcliffe, curling a fine shot from 20 yards into the top corner of the net with Hutchinson having no chance of stopping it (24 mins).

A drinks' break was immediately decreed, which ended with a re-enactment of the kick off by Alty from the centre spot.

There was little to set the pulse racing before Ward got in a shot from 30 yards but it flew very wide of the goal (40 mins).

As the interval approached Golden was discomfited by Taylor and the right-back's efforts to clear only relayed the ball to Dudley. From ten yards or so he calmly put his side 2-1 up (45 mins).

In three added minutes before half-time Dudley was booked for a foul as Alty's lacklustre showing after the drinks' interlude left them chasing the game.

Radcliffe made numerous changes at the break with only a couple of outfield players staying on. For their part, Alty's only change was in goal where Fallon replaced Hutchinson.

It was the Boro who started the better and from a freekick taken just outside the box, they hit the woodwork through Greenwood (49 mins). Radciffe continued on top as they won a corner (53 mins).

On the hour mark, Radcliffe brought on Modi and another substitute.

At the same stoppage Altrincham made eight changes (61 mins). On came Knowles, Bailey, Reddin, German, Raymond, Edwards, Kosylo and Marriott, leaving only Weaver and Kirk from the starting eleven still on the pitch.

Radcliffe continued to enjoy the forward momentum with Fallon called upon to save from a Boro trialist (68 mins).

Alty did win a corner themselves but this was from an unforced defensive error rather than threatening attacking play (73 mins).

Play continued with Altrincham failing to look a threat before Banks was booked for a challenge (85 mins). The resulting freekick from the edge of the D was comfortably saved by Fallon.

Radcliffe continued on top before added time was started. In its first minute Alty won a promising freekick on the bye-line left of goal but Kirk's effort was woefully overhit. And so the Robins fell to a disappointing defeat in which their lower level opponents were the deserved victors.
