ALTRINCHAM (1) 1
SOLIHULL MOORS (0) 1

Vanarama National League match
played on Tuesday, 25 March, 2025 at 7.45pm.

SUMMARY:

After a wonderful goal from Regan Linney had given Altrincham the lead in the 17th minute, nothing much went right for the hosts.

They lost goalkeeper Rob Lainton to a shoulder injury after 36 minutes, after he had been clattered as he came out to punch clear, albeit a workman-like Solihull side failed to test his replacement Caleb Ansen at all from open play.

Shortly afterwards Alty were unlucky not to double their lead when Cooper's header came back out, off the upright, with the keeper static.

The Moors got level from the penalty spot when Cundy was deemed to have been fouled by Kosylo inside the box. Dodoo, on his debut, converted the penalty comfortably (53 mins).

Then Justin Amaluzor became the questionable recipient of Alty's seventh red card in the National League this season following an incident near the corner flag at the Golf Road end, which the Robins were attacking (59 mins).

The ten men continued to be the better side but spurned several decent chances to win the game. The draw lifted Alty by a place to eighth on another night of league action during which four play-off contenders faltered.

TEAM NEWS:

Still without the injured cohort of Crankshaw, Ross, the two Joneses, and Nuttall, to which Bickerstaff has more recently been added, Altrincham made two changes as Wilson and Olson moved to the bench to accommodate the return of Amaluzor and Crawford.

Just before the match, Solihull had signed Joe Dodoo, an experienced EFL striker, on a short-term deal, and he started. Also coming into the side were Labadie and Wells-Morrison. Dropping out of the starting eleven were Joe Newton, Fletcher Holman and Oliver Tipton.

BACKGROUND:

This was a meeting of two badly out of form sides. Before last Saturday's win the Moors could boast just one win in thirteen league games whilst Alty had lost six of their previous seven National League fixtures.

REPORT:

Solihull kicked off towards Golf Road on a soft pitch which had been additionally watered.

New signing Dodoo got in an early shot which went narrowly wide (6 mins) whilst, for Alty, Kosylo was looking lively as the game got off to a fairly even start.

Banks and Amaluzor then combined well, on the right, to win the game's first corner, on the left, and another corner soon followed, this time on the right (15 mins).

Crawford then slid in to win the ball about 40 yards out and he fed Linney to his left. Linney advanced and drifted diagonally towards goal, leaving Hall-Johnson in his wake, before curling a superb shot into the far, upper reaches of the net, just inside the back post, to give Altrincham the lead (17 mins).

Alty's next real thrat of a goal came again from Linney, this time on the right, but his pass to Amaluzor did not succeed in finding its target (25 mins).

And it was Linney as provider, once again, two minutes later when he laid the ball off for Golden who, unfortunately, launched his shot into orbit.

Alty's next effort was likewise far too high as Newby mis-aimed his shot from 22 yards (29 mins)

For their part, the Moors were offering next to nothing in goal threat but the combative Jamey Osborne was making himself unpopular with the home support due to his recurrent mouthing-off and trying to induce the referee to book Altrincham players by such measures as raising three fingers to Mr Westgate to suggest an offender had committed three fouls.

Next, an aerial ball drew Lainton to come out of his goal to push the ball away but he was caught late by Duku (33 mins). Both players stayed down but it was Alty's keeper who came off the worse, having to be substituted for an injury to his left shoulder. So Norwich City loanee Caleb Ansen came on to replace him, one of five keepers who Alty have needed to use this season in the league (36 mins).

Despite this blow, Altrincham almost doubled their lead soon afterwards. That chance arrived after Linney had won a corner on the right. Newby's flag-kick was headed firmly against the post by Jake Cooper, who was making his 100th appearance for Alty (40 mins).

With Alty setting the pace they soon gained another corner, this time through Golden (41 mins), followed, soon after, by another fine run on the left by Linney who got to the bye-line where his effort was halted at the near post by keeper Wright (45 mins).

In the first of a conservative four added minutes, a rare Solihull shot, by Osborne, from 25 yards, went wide (45+1 minss).

The final act of the half was a tackle on Clarke from which the Moors defender let out a loud scream but that did not induce Mr Westgate to award a freekick (45+4 mins).

Altrincham started the half with an early corner on the left before, ironically, it was Clarke who was booked for a foul on Linney (50 mins).

Solihull were then awarded a penalty when Cundy went down as Kosylo challenged him. Dodoo scored convincingly from the penalty spot to level the score (53 mins). It was arguably the Moors' first shot on targaet of the evening.

Five minutes later Tipton came on for Labadie (58 mins).

A minute later, Alty were advancing on the right wing when Amaluzor was challenged and, as he went down, threw out his leg to try and retrieve the ball. His leg caught an opponent and Mr Westgate judged this to be worthy of a red card, which was questionable. So Alty had suffered their seventh red card in a league game this season, their highest tally since 2010-11 when seven were recorded across a complete season.

The ten men nevertheless continued to be the beter side, whilst Cundy became the second Moors player to be cautioned, for a foul on Banks (65 mins).

Great skill then saw Linney pull down a high ball as he advanced on the right. His cross found Kosylo but, from close range, his shot struck the keeper (67 mins).

At the other end Ansen remained unemployed though the Moors did now shoot narrowly wide (68 mins).

Uncharacteristically, Linney missed a good chance by firing over the bar (71 mins) before Stevenson replaced Hall-Johnson for the visitors (72 mins).

Alty's ten men continued to be the more attacking side and it took a good save from Wright to beat out, for a corner, a fine shot from Kosylo (79 mins). Then Wright had to make two more blocks in quick succession, the latter from Linney. Moments later an Alty corner had been secured .

Another decent chance for Alty arrived after the corner when a defender sliced the ball to Baines but, off balance, he could only turn the ball wide of the target (82 mins).

Weaver now replaced Linney (82 mins) and Bostock came on for Solihull's Osborne (82 mins).

Next Whyte-Hall replaced Oakley as the clock ticked away (84 mins).

A needless foul by Marriott saw him cautioned (89 mins) before six added minutes were computed but it was not until the third of these that Alty got in another shot, with Newby firing too high.

Kosylo (90+5 min) and Cooper (90+6 mins) picked up yellows for fouls induced by frustration as the vsitors emerged with a point despite having offered very little in the way of quality or of attacking intent.
