WEALDSTONE (2) 3
ALTRINCHAM (2) 3

Vanarama National League match
played on Tuesday, 10 December, 2024 at 7.45pm.

SUMMARY:

Having not scored in their four previous visits to Grosvenor Vale, Altrincham scored three times and led twice in this six-goal draw.

After Altrincham had started well, the hosts dominated the next twenty minutes or so and, during that spell, they took a deserved lead in the 20th minute. The goal arrived when Ross blocked a shot but the ball fell for Cesay to put his side ahead.

Alty's equaliser came out of the blue, from a freekick thirty-five yards out. Newby's low shot was not held by the Stones' loanee keeper Steward and Crawford reacted the quickest to poke the loose ball into the net (34 mins).

After Steward's kick had been held up in the wind, Alty took the lead. The ball was worked to Linney, who cut in from the left to score with a characteristic low shot into the far corner to make it 1-2, an unlikely scoreline at that point on the balance of play (42 mins).

However Wealdstone made 2-2 in the 45th minute when they advanced up their right and Ashford played in Oldham loanee Reid who beat Ross, who was caught in no man's land.

Wealdstone were to largely dominate the second half but, early in the half, Alty got ahead once more, this time from the penalty spot when Golden was fouled. Linney converted to make it 2-3 (54 mins). His brace in this match took his National League tally to 13 goals this season.

But the hosts deservedly levelled again when Reid headed home a cross from the right (74 mins).

Despite dominating much of the remainder of the game Wealdstone had to settle for a draw.

TEAM NEWS:

For this match, the Robins made five changes from the eleven that started against Macclesfield the previous Saturday in the FA Trophy.

Tom Crawford returned after suspension and Baines started, as captain, alongside loanee Charlie Olson, with Jake Cooper dropping to the bench.

Wilson, Reddin, Kosylo and Osborne all also dropped to substitute roles as Liam Humbles and Isaac Marriott, (making his first leaue start since injury), came into midfield whilst Jake Bickerstaff started up front. Outside the match squad Joe Nuttall joined Amaluzor, Eddy Jones, James Jones, Haygarth and Crankshaw on the sidelines. However, there was a welcome return from his loan for Luke Weaver who joined the bench.

BACKGROUND:

This had become a midweek fixture but Wealdstone's progress in the FA Cup had caused the postponement of the original fixture on 30 November.

REPORT:

Altrincham started brightly, winning a corner barely thirty seconds after kick-off. And, after that, a curling Linney effort deflected to the hands of keeper Steward.

However, the hosts soon responded as Tottenham loanee Georgiou put in a cross which deflected off an Alty defender for a corner to the Stones. Alty got into a bit of a mess from the corner but ultimately a Mariappa header went to Ross. And then Cesay advanced unchallenged up the middle but he shot wide to Altrincham's relief (10 mins).

Moments later, the same player again got forward before being halted. Then Boldewijn advanced on the right and Ross had to beat the ball away. Alty were now under some sustained pressure (13 mins).

Alty were again riding their luck when Reid headed wide (15 mins) and soon the Oldham loanee was trying to claim that Baines had done him some injury only for the "victim" to recover miraculously when the referee did not respond to his complaints (17 mins).

Another home corner by Wells-Morrison produced a header from Boldewijn which went wide (19 mins). Altrincham's respite was short as the Stones advanced on the right and, although Ross parried the first attempt at goal, the ball fell for Cesay to net comfortably (20 mins).

The game then passed through a scrappy few minutes during which Reid turned his attention from Baines to Olson in his quest to wind up his opponents (26 mins). Five minutes later, Olson sat down for attention but, after refitting his right boot, he was able to resume (32 mins).

A foul on Crawford by Cesay gave Altrincham some potential respite but, as Newby weighed up his options with the freekick, some 35 yards out left of centre, it seemed a little optimistic when he chose to shoot at goal. However, the home keeper made a hash of dealing with Newby's low effort and, though he stopped the ball, Steward only parried it.

Crawford was the first of three Alty players to lunge at the ball as the home defence hesitated and the former Hartlepool man had a simple task of putting it into the unguarded net to level the scores (34 mins).

Parity was not something that the visitors really deserved at this stage having been under pressure for most of the previous 25 minutes.

The goal not only shocked the home side but it lifted the spirits of the visitors and those sentiments were strengthen further when Altrincham took an unexpected lead before half-time. Goalkeeper Steward launched a kick upfield, ponly for the wind to hold it up before it reached halfway. When it dropped Altrincham got the ball to Linney on the left. He cut in and fired a low shot into the net at the far post (42 mins).

However, Wealdstone recovered to get themselves level before the interval. A long ball up the right set the hosts advancing before Reid, more central, got the better of the retreating Humbles to convert the chance and make it 2-2 (45 mins).

During the three added minutes at the end of the half, an incident by the Altrincham bye-line saw Ashford booked for an offence against Golden (45+2 mins).

Half-time: WEALDSTONE 2
ALTRINCHAM 2

Altrincham were fortunate to survive a goalmouth scramble near Ross's left post (50 mins) as the hosts began the second half on the front foot.

But when Alty did get forward, Goden was brought down as he entered the left of the penalty area. A penalty was awarded which Linney converted, his effort rising towards the roof of the net. So Alty now led for the second time in the match, this time 3-2 (54 mins).

After a Wealdstone corner had been dealt with, Alty made their first change with Kosylo replacing Humbles, whose unaccustomed midfield partnership with Marriott had not been wholly successful (59 mins).

Following successive fouls on Marriotot by Kretzschmar and then by Mundle-Smith on Newby, Alty took a quick freekick which earned them a corner Boldewijn. But that came to nothing and at the other end Alty were fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty whena home player seemed to be tripped in the box (63 mins).

As Wealdstone again were on top, they won a corner but nothing came of it before Grant replaced Mundle-Smith for the Stones (69 mins).

Next, Olson was perhaps fortunate to escape a card when he tripped an opponent, at which point George Wilson replaced Isaac Marriott (71 mins).

Shortly afterwards, Wilson lost a 50-50 challenge and it proved costly as the resulting left-wing cross was headed home by Reid to make it 3-3 (74 mins).

Things got worse as Crawford was booked for a foul on Boldewjn (76 mins), following which Alty made a second change when Olson was replaced by Cooper (77 mins). Nevertheless, Wealdstone remained on top with Reid misheading a good opportunity froma right-wing cross (79 mins).

A third change saw Robins midfielder Osborne replace striker Bickerstaff (83 mins) and, after a bit of a fracas between Crawford and Cook, a fourth substitution brought Weaver on to replace Linney (86 mins).

Alty won a corner (88 min) before Weaver disappointingly lost possession in a counter-attack when he should have fed the advancing Newby who had found space to his right (90 mins).

Four added minutes included a poor freekick from Kretzschmar but there was to be no change to the 3-3 score.

Altrincham had not played well against a Wealdstone side that belied its twentieth position in the National League. For their part, Altrincham rose to eighth with this draw.
