SOLIHULL MOORS (2) 3
ALTRINCHAM (0) 3

Vanarama National League match
played on Saturday, 9 November, 2024 at 3pm.

SUMMARY:

Alty came back from 2-0 and 3-1 to take a point at the Armco Arena.

After a lively opening period, Alty fell behind in the 27th minute when Whitmore fired home following a header which came back off the bar and was initially cleared.

On 40 minutes, following a Moors throw-in, it became 2-0 when Bowen netted from close range after a parry of a low Stevenson effort by Ross.

With the Moors looking comfortable, at the end of a good move two Alty substitutes Nuttall and Kosylo combined to feed Linney beyondthe far post who made it 2-1 (72 mins).

But seven minutes later Solihull restored their two-goal lead as Stevens scored from the edge of the box (79 mins). However, four minutes after that, Linney's stretching header from a ball over the defence made it 3-2 (83 mins)

Then, from a Nuttall feed, Kosylo was put clear and levelled in the last minute, with a shot across the keeper, making it 3-3 (90 mins).

TEAM NEWS:

Isaac Marriott was named in the matchday squad for the first time this season. Compared with the side that trounced AFC Fylde a fortnight earlier, the only change saw Eddy Jones replace Lewis Banks who was suspended so was not in the squad for the first time this season in the National League. Ollie Crankshaw was again missing from the squad after his brief return from his long-term injury.

Also an absentee was Justin Amaluzor who was presumably unfit.

The Moors had played a much changed side in their FA Cup match the preceding Saturday compared with the side that knocked Alty out of the FA Cup a fortnight earlier. Manager Andy Whing brought in Bowen, Adu-Poku, Gale, Stevens, Wilkinson and Osborne, replacing Newton, Stevenson, Bostock, Tipton, Labadie and Riley for the FA Cup clash.

As expected Whing made five changes, to field his strongest team for today's match with Osborne, Stevens, Bowen, Wilkinson and Adu-Poku coming in to start.

BACKGROUND:

Alty had not played for a fortnight owing to their exit from the FA Cup at the hands of the Moors, whilst they had progressed comfotrably to Round Two the previous weekend.

REPORT:

On a dull afternoon, with the floodlights on from the start, the hosts started brightly with an early Jamey Osborne long throw causing problems that needed Golden to concede a first-minute corner. And, less than another minute later, the Moors had gained a second flag-kick.

Ross then had to field a long-range shot from opposition captain, Osborne, as Alty found themselves under the cosh from the kick-off (3 mins).

But they responded with Crawford's excellent diagonal ball for Eddy Jones earning Altrincham a corner, which was taken short but came to nothing (5 mins).

The energetic start to the game continued as Solihull won two more corners in a five-minute spell (7 to 12 mins).

But, in between these corners, it almost got much better for Altrincham as Newby's excellent pass fed Linney who attempted to chip the keeper only for Walker to win the duel (9 mins)

Next, goalkeeper Walker's mis-clearance fell for Linney who fed Newby for a shot that was blocked (14 mins).

An even better chance arose for the visitors as Newby fed Linney but he disappointingly missed the target (22 mins).

However, Altrincham were then indebted to Ross as the dangerous Poku got in a cross which was diverted and required a smart close-range save from the visitors' keeper (25 mins).

Another cross from the lively winger Poku earned the Moors a corner. Following this a Moors header came back off the crossbar and was cleared off the line by Golden but only for the ball to find its way to Whitmore who fired home and gave his side the lead (27 mins).

Reddin had been uncharacteristically quiet for the Robins but he now got in a run on the right and won a corner when his shot struck Newton (37 mins). The Moors immediately counter-attacked after the corner with Poku getting past Golden and into the box but shooting only narrowly wide (38 mins).

Solihull soon doubled their lead as Alty failed to clear a throw and when Ross parried a resulting shot from Stevenson, Bowen was on hand to score from close range (40 mins).

After a single minute's added time, the interval was reached with Altrincham two goals adrift.

The Moors again started brightly with Poku threatening and drawing an excellent clearance by James Jones (47 mins). Alty remained on the back foot as a Reddin foul earned him a yellow card (48 mins). Mis-passes were not helping the Alty cause as the game reached the hour mark and the hosts were looking comfortable.

Alty then made a double swap as Osborne and Kosylo came on for Humbles and Reddin (61 mins).

Kosylo introduced hinself with a late challenge on Jamey Osborne which earned him a card and left the Moors captain needing treatment (65 mins).

A third Alty change brought on Nuttall in place of Wilson (65 mins).

Kosylo rode his luck with a handball. The Moors took the freekick quickly with Stevens finding the net but a retake was ordered which, this time, Stevens hit narrowly wide with Ross flat-footed (67 mins).

With time ticking away and Alty making little impression it came as a surprise when they put together a good move. Nuttall fed Kosylo, whose quick, low cross from the right found Linney beyond the backpost, from where he smasheed a rising shot past Walker from an angle to make it 2-1 (72 mins).

A home change brought on Bostock in place of the crocked Osborne (73 mins). As the game went into the final fifteen minutes it became more open and when Osborne's ball over the top found Linney, left of goal, Oakley was obliged to concede a corner (77 mins).

But play soon switched to the other end as Solihull advanced up the left and Stevens was able to cut inside before shooting past Ross from the edge of the box, making it 3-1 with just eleven minutes remaining (79 mins).

Alty's reponse was to bring on Bickerstaff for Newby (81 mins). Coincidentally, or otherwise, Alty scored a second goal soon afterwards when Crawford's long ball up the middle was met by a stretching Linney, whose header over Walker found the net from the edge of the box, making it 3-2 (83 mins).

Solihull threatened again after this but the covering Kosylo ensured that they only won a corner (84 mins). End to end play now saw Bickerstaff curl a shot narrowly wide (85 mins). Kosylo again rode his luck when he committed a foul before Linney fed Nuttall who won a corner off Whitmore (87 mins).

Solihull made a final change in the 89th minute when Gale replaced Stevenson (89 mins). Moments later it was 3-3 as a good move, following an Altrincham throw in their own half, ended with Nuttall feeding Kosylo> In the clear, Kosylo completed his cameo with the equaliser, a low shot across Walker's dive and into the far corner of the net (90 mins).

Six added minutes were announced during which Cooper replaced Linney to bolster up the defence (90+2 mins). Added time went on for some seven minutes before the final whistle confirmed a remarkable comeback by Altrincham.
