SOLIHULL MOORS (1) 2
ALTRINCHAM (1) 2
after extra time
Altrincham lost 3-1 on penalties
played on Tuesday, 15 October, 2024 at 7.45pm.
SUMMARY:
After an Olson header had won Altrincham an early corner, Solihull took a twelfth-minute lead when Labadie scored from a Bostock freekick, conceded by Wilson who was booked.
Midway through the first half Altrincham belatedly began to settle, without initially causing danger to the hosts.
But they got their reward for improved play when Olson's downward header from a Newby cross beat Wilson to make it 1-1 (31 mins).
The half finished with four corners in a row for Altrincham in added time but nothing came of them.
In the 61st minute Altrincham deservedly took the lead from a short corner. Newby took it to Reddin, received the ball back and his cross was netted by Crawford from close range.
However, after home pressure, substitute Jamey Osborne made it 2-2 in the first minute of added time to send the game into extra time. It remained 2-2 after extra-time with Alty having spurned a handful of chances to settle the tie.
Having won a penalty shoot-out just eight days earlier against Blackburn Rovers U=21s in the National League Cup by converting six of their seven spot-kicks, confidence was high that a win could be secured again. But it turned out to be dreadful shoot-out as three of Alty's four takers failed to score and the flawless Moors ran out 3-1 winners on penalties.

TEAM NEWS:
Altrincham made two changes as Eddy Jones came in to replace Golden and Lewis Baines started his first match after injury, in place of James Jones. Both Golden and James Jones moved to the bench.
Crankshaw, who finished the game on Saturday, was missing from the squad tonight, whilst Haygarth came in on the bench in his place. Elliot Osborne, who has joined Isaac Marriott on the sidelines with what is believed to be a shoulder ligement injury, also sat out this match, as he had done the original tie.
The Moors made three changes as Bowen and Wilkinson dropped to the bench and Tunnicliffe was left out altogether.
Newton, Labadie and Whitmore were all promoted from the bench to start.
Solihull named seven subs after only having six on Saturday, with new loan signing James Gale from Mansfield coming in along with Morrison.

BACKGROUND:
The teams had produced a very mediocre 1-1 draw in the original tie at Altrincham and after Monday's draw they knew that the winner would host Maidstone United in the First Round Proper with a decent chance of reaching Round Two against lower ranked opposition.
REPORT:
The Moors kicked off and the game started with more verve than was seen in the 90 minutes at Altrincham in the original tie, which was nort very difficult.
Inside the third minute Solihull hit the underside of the Alty crossbar through Oakley's overhead kick before Alty almost snatched a fifth-minute lead. That arose from a Newby freekick, when Olson rose to direct a header at goal which was parried away by Walker for a corner.
The next five minutes saw two corners for the hosts and a home freekick, conceded by Wilson who picked up an early booking for his offence. Taken by Bostock, the freekick, located Labadie who found the net to give Solihill the lead (12 mins).
Alty were struggling to put their game together as, next, Ryley went close, winning another corner for his side (16 min).
Just two minutes later, a Stevenson cross earned another corner off Olson (18 mins).
Belatedly, Alty began to settle and, when Amaluzor threaded a pass through to the advancing Banks, Alty gained their first corner (20 mins). Then, after Crawford had seen his shot blocked, came a second Alty corner, off Stevenson, which was overhit.
When Amaluzor went down and needed treatment, manager Parkinson gathered his players for a tactical talk and it seemed to work as play resumed with Linney, from the left, feeding Newby who drew a save, albeit a very routine one, from Walker (26 mins).
Alty's improvement continued as Amaluzor won a freekick (28 mins) but, when Altrincham equalised in the 31st minute, it was fair to say that it had come against the overall tenor of the match so far. From Newby's freekick the ball was floated toward the back post where Olson converted from close range, recording the first Alty goal for the new loanee from Blackburn Rovers.
Ross had to be alert to prevent Howell from restoring the home advantage (39 mins) before Amaluzor curled a shot wide at the other end. A studs-up tackle by Stevenson earned him a card but Ethan Ross also managed to get a caution, presumably for dissent (45 mins).
Added time was to produce a remakable four corners for Altrincham as they finished the half on the front foot.
The first of the four flag-kicks came from a Linney feed to Newby who forced a save from Walker. But none of the corners produced a goal before the whistle blew after five added minutes, with the scores level.
Half-Time: SOLIHULL MOORS 1 |
Alty kicked off the second half and initially retained the upper hand, earning an early corner through Wilson (50 mins).
The Moors attempted to regain the upper hand with a double substitution; Osborne and Bowen replaced Bostock and Oakley (53 mins).
Osborne soon found himself in the book (58 mins) before Altrincham won another corner from a Linney effort which Walker parried (61 mins). Newby took the corner, short, and received the ball back from Reddin before crossing the ball for Crawford to score from six yards out or so (61 mins).
The hosts responded by bringing on Stevens for Howell (64 mins).
However, Alty remained on top as Reddin got into the box, before Linney fired over the bar from a Newby pass (67 mins). There was then a bizarre incident as a Moors player apparently removed the label on Ross's waterbottle which presumably carried the penalty-taking guidelines for the Alty keeper in the event of a shootout!
Alty continued to look comfortable with Reddin going close to adding to the lead (71 mins) before the winger also won a freekick for which Clarke was booked (74 mins).
Another Moors substitution brought Gale on for Ryley (75 mins) and James Jones replaced an ailing Lewis Baines (75 mins). Alty continued to threaten with Reddin going close twice in quick succession (80 mins). But both these efforts and another from Linney earlier were ones that might have been converted.
Olson was now booked for a foul (81 mins) and from the freekick a home corner was won and the tide of the game had effectively turned with the Moors set to dominate the closing stages.
To counter this shift in the balance of play, Alty brought on Golden to replace Reddin, with Alty seeking to hold on to what they had with a 5-4-1 shape (87 mins).
Six added minutes were computed but, in just the first of those, the Moors equalised as Osborne fired past Ross from the edge of the box (90+1 mins). Although Alty won two further corners they could not break the deadlock and extra time loomed.
90 minutes: SOLIHULL MOORS 2 |
With rain falling staedily Alty kicked off extra-time with two substitiuions having been made; Kosylo and Humbles replaced Olson and Wilson as the clock was reset to 90 minutes.
Alty's failure to take their chances in this match was repeated with, first Kosylo (91 mins) and Newby (99 mins) failing to convert. But at the other end Alty were grateful to Golden for clearing off the line from Labadie (102 mins), who was then replaced by Wilkinson (104 mins).
At the break in extra-time, Nuttall replaced Amaluzor (106 mins).
Alty won an early corner before yet another decent chance was scorned with Humbles feeding Linney who could not get the better of Walker in a one-on-one (111 mins).
Linney disappointed again two minutes later when he shot straight at Walker and he did no better with another opening (116 mins). Next, Humbles shot narrowly wide as chances to settle the tie came and went and the game went to penalties to decide its outcome.
After extra time: SOLIHULL MOORS 2 |
- Linney fired over the bar. 0-0
- Stevens sent Ross the wrong way to score. 1-0
- Nuttall's kick squirmed through the keeper's hands to level the score. 1-1
- Wilkinson scored down the middle. 2-1
- Crawford hit the post. 2-1
- Substitute Gale made no mistake. 3-1
- Newby's effort was saved, so Altrincham had lost 3-1
With a second-string Altrincham team having netted six out of seven penalties just a week earlier in a National League Cup shootout victory, this time the first team's spot-kicks were poor.
So, for the fourth season in five, Altrincham had crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle, sacrificing £21,250 in prize money from this round and the next, where even defeat would have earned £15,000 of that sum.
