ALTRINCHAM (2) 4
EBBSFLEET UNITED (0) 0
played on Saturday, 7 September, 2024 at 3pm.
SUMMARY:
Four well-struck goals secured Altrincham a comfortable win over an Ebbsfleet side which never troubled Alty keeper Ethan Ross.
Ebbsfleet started reasonably but were hit by two goals in quick succession inside the opening ten minutes. Alty had already won two corners and Linney had fired a shot miles over the bar before a neat flick from Bickerstaff on the right allowed Newby to advance and, when the ball came back out to Linney, he hit a fine shot from outside the box into the back of the net (9 mins).
And no sooner had play resumed when Newby smacked home an equally good shot, again from outside the box, to make it 2-0 (10 mins). Alty then comfortably retained their lead to the interval.
A third goal arrived just a minute after the start of the second period when Eddy Jones fired home a shot, again from the edge of the box.
After that, the half was blighted by eight stoppages for substitutions but Altrincham added a fourth goal in the 88th miinute when substitute Liam Humbles, making his debut on loan from Salford City, flicked the ball forward in his own half and fed another substitute, Kahrel Reddin, who fired home from right of goal.

TEAM NEWS:
Last week, Joe Nuttall was prohibited from playing against his employers, and he also sat out today's game for which Alty made three changes. Captain Lewis Baines remained sidelined by the hamstring issue which had led to his not completing the game against Oldham; Jake Cooper replaced him at centre-back. Alex Newby returned in place of George Wilson who had picked up a training ground injury in midweek. The third change saw Banks return at right-back in place of Golden.
James Jones took over the captaincy today.
On the morning of this match, the signing on loan of Salford City midfielder Liam Humble was announced and he was named on the Altrincham bench. Another potential debutant on the bench was Remi Thompson, signed at the start of this season.
In the week before this match, Ebbsfleet had signed ex-Huddersfield Town left-winger Charles Ondo and tall defender Mustapha Olagunju who also spent time at Huddersfield as well as Port Vale. The latter was on the bench but the former was not involved as manager Danny Searle made several changes to try and find a winning formula.

BACKGROUND:
Bottom of the table Ebbsfleet United arrived looking for a first win in this, their seventh fixture of the season. Meanwhile Altrincham were seeking a first win in four outings.
Both sides were joint lowest scorers in the league this season, with just four goals apiece to their name from six fixtures.
REPORT:
On a cloudy but dry afternoon, Altrincham kicked off towards the away end where a loyal band of supporters were housed, having made the lengthy journey from Kent despite the match being live streamed at their own clubhouse, a move permitted because it was an "international weekend" as England were playing in the Nations Cup.
Amaluzor got past Page to win an early throw, on the right, and that led to the first corner of the game (4 mins). Ebbsfleet then threatened and it needed a timely tackle inside the box by James Jones to halt the visitors' progress. Play switched to the other end as Linney, deployed on the left, gained a corner off Page, again taken from the right by Eddy Jones (7 mins)
Following this, Crawford crossed from the left to Newby who laid the ball back from the centre of the box for Linney to fire home with a strong shot from outside the box (9 mins).
Soon after the restart, the Fleet lost possession and Newby took advantage to fire home, again from outside the box, giving goalkeeper Cousins no chance as he made it 2-0 (10 mins). At the seventh attempt this season, Alty had scored twice in a match.
After Banks had seen a shot comfortably saved, Amaluzor should have made it 3-0 but the winger screwed his shot comfprtably wide from a Linney feed (19 mins).
Ebbsfleet remained under the cosh as Linney won the ball off Cordner and fed Newby whose well-hit shot cannoned off the keeper's left upright (20 mins). At this stage a repeat of last season's 6-1 outcome seemed very likely.
. Alty corner, won by Amaluzor, came and went (28 mins) before a curling shot from Newby went wide of the target as the hosts dominated (29 mins).
On the half-hour two tremendous shots by Osborne, the first from 30 yards out and the second from a little closer in, were blocked but Alty's fourth corner resulted (30 mins).
Alty continued on top but eased off a little towards the break as Ebbsfleet earned themselves a corner (41 mins). After this, Alty contented themsleves with playing balls across the field at the back before the interval arrived with the visitors fortuinate to be trailing by only two goals.
Half-Time: ALTRINCHAM 2 |
Any worries that Alty's failure to put the game beyond the visitors before half time were soon banished when the hosts made it 3-0 within a minute of the re-start. And for the third time this afternoon it was another great strike from outside the box, this time by Eddy Jones, who latched onto a headed clearance from a Newby cross and hammered the ball home from a central position (46 mins).
Linney and Bickerstaff then combined well to give the former a shot at goal which Cousins saved comfortably (56 mins). Next, Danny Searle made his first change with Domi replacing Page (57 mins) and he followed up with a double change soon afterwards when Fonguck came on for Bingham (59 mins) and Kellermann replaced Randall (60 mins).
But Altrincham were to win a corner shortly after this triple change, with Cousins tipping away Eddy Jones's flag-kick (62 mins).
A first Altrincham change, on 63 minutes, brought Salford loanee Humbles on for his debut in midfield in place of striker Bickerstaff, who had worked hard for the team.
Shortly after a rare Ebbsfleet shot, by Edser, had cleared the bar Ebssfleet made a double change to complete their five substitutions. Thomas replaced Wright (65 mins) and O'Neill replaced Phillips (66 mins).
The seventh new player to be introduced in a nine-minute spell of disrupted play brought Matty Kosylo on to replace Newby (66 mins).
And the interruptions continued with Reddin replacing Amaluzor on 70 minutes. An Alty corner and an Osborne shot, which Cousins saved, underlined that Alty's comfortable afternoon was continuing (&1 mins).
Next Reddin fired well wide, across the goal, from the right (72 mins), before Golden came on in a straight swap at left-back for Eddy Jones (74 mins).
Crawford whould have made it 4-0 from a Reddin lay-off but he shot wide (76 mins) and history repeated itslef from another Reddin lay off when Linney fired over the bar from 16 yards (81 mins).
At the other end, Kellermann likewise shot over the Alty bar (83 mins). The eighth and final round of substitutions (three made by the hosts and five by Alty, each side introducing a total of five new players) came in the 85th minute as Thompson made his debut in place of Linney.
Reddin was making an impression on the right with his direct running at the defence but, after a fine dribble his shot ran tamely to Cousins. However, the winger was to be rewarded with a goal a minute later. Humbles's clever flick inside his own half gave him space to feed Reddin, whoses low shot from the right found the back of the net at Cousins's near post to make it 4-0 (88 mins).
Dallison found himself booked for upending Thompson (89 mins) before Kosylo earned a corner, just before six added minutes were decreed. These produced no change to the score as Ebbsfleet admirable fans contmeplated the long journey home after their side's comprehensive defeat. But it could easily have ended 5-0 as, in the closing seconds, Reddin's cross from the right came back off the inside of the back post to be gathered by a grateful Cousins.
For Alty the win ended a run of three winless matches and doubled their goal tally this season ahead of a difficult week of two long treks to the south, with Barnet (Tuesday( and Yeovil (Saturday) the destinations.
