DORKING WANDERERS 0
ALTRINCHAM 0

Vanarama National League match
played on Saturday, 6 April, 2024 at 3pm.

SUMMARY:

The first half, played in blustery conditions, ended goalless. Alty came close to taking an early lead when a Linney cross was diverted onto his own crossbar by Bobby-Joe Taylor (7 mins).

Overall, play was fairly even before the interval with neither keeper needing to make a serious save.

The second half started well for Alty but Dorking went on to have the better of the half, but with Ross only having to make one decent save.

Three added minutes were declared and they witnessed four bookings, one of which was a red card for George Wilson for an off the ball incident which presumably ends his season prematurely unless his side qualifies and progresses in the play offs.

BACKGROUND:

At kick-off Dorking were in second-bottom place as they welcomed fourth-placed Altrincham.

REPORT:

Altrincham kicked off into a strong blustery wind and won two early freekicks for fouls on Osborne (6 mins).

Following a good run by Linney, Altrincham almost snatched an early lead as his cross was diverted by the legs of Bobby-Joe Taylor onto his side's own crossbar (7 mins).

Cooper was then fortunate to avoid a yellow card for tugging back an opponent (12 mins) but neither side threatened the opposition goal again before Prior went down with an injury to his left leg. After treatment he had to be subbed by Rutherford (18 mins).

Following a home freekick by Bobby-Joe Taylor, the hosts won a corner off Newby which came to nothing (22 mins).

Another freekick by Taylor, following a foul on Muitt, likewise came to naught before Linney got to the byeline and earned Alty a first corner (31 mins). Neither this, nor another corner, earned by Kosylo, produced any threat to the home side (33 mins).

Dorking now got the upper hand and won three corners in two minutes which, likewise, were unproductive (39 mins).

Play progressed, punctuated by regular minor fouls before a fairly even match of moderate quality reached the interval.

Dorking made their second change at the break with Bowerman replacing Blair.

Altrincham started the half well but still failed to create anything like a clear opening.

The first corner of the half came Alty's way after 64 minutes. But the game continued in mundane fashion without any goalmouth excitement before a Newby shot looped up and caused Male some difficulty in putting it out for a corner, over his bar (70 mins).

Newby's corner did not beat the first defender. At this point a double change for Altrincham brought onn Angus and Donawa for Linney and Mooney respectively (72 mins). Mooney had had little involvement in the game and still seems somewhat short of the form that earned him a move to Southend.

After a home corner had been and gone, an Altrincham corner almost produced a goal as Baines's volley was well stopped by Male (76 mins). Osborne apparently picked up a booking at this point.

Dorking now threatened through Carter, although Alty managed to clear. Next Conn-Clarke, presumably not fully fit, came on for Kosylo (78 mins).

Home long throws continued to threaten but they were adequately dealt with by the Alty defence.

Dorking introduced Moore for Hollis 83 mins) but Altrincham came the closer of the two sides to scoring when a Donawa long-throw gave a Cooper a chance which Male saved well at the cost of a corner. Alty's two best shots of the match had come from central defenders, Baines and Cooper (86 mins).

More Dorking pressure was relieved by a freekick won by Osborne (90 mins). From thirty yards Conn-Clarke's freekick was punched clear by Male.

Three added minutes were computed and they started witha yellow card for Cooper's foul on Carter.

Alty goalkeeping coach Matt Gould was then booked in the technical area for some reason.

A third booking in as many minutes saw Wilson sent off for a clear kick at an opponent, Kuhl, off the ball (90+ 3mins). The young midfielder will face a thrree-match ban which will mark the end of his season, unless Alty qualify and progress in the play-offs.

Finally Dorking's Kuhl's booking for a foul made it four cards in as many minutes at the end of a game which had been a disappointing spectacle.
