ALTRINCHAM (0) 0
HYDE UNITED (1) 2

Cheshire Senior Cup Quarter-Final match
played on Tuesday, 30 January, 2024 at 7.45pm.

Match played at Hyde United FC

SUMMARY:

Although played at Ewen Fields, Hyde, this was officially a home quarter-final tie for Altrincham in the Cheshire Senior Cup.

Altrincham fielded a relatively strong starting eleven which included a returning Ollie Byrne, as well as Matty Kosylo, Dior Angus, George Burroughs, Sam Roscoe, George Wilson and Dan Mooney from the first-team squad.

But they proved incapable of beating a Hyde side which played for a quarter of the game with ten men.

Hyde took a deserved sixteenth-minute lead through Makoli who played a one-two with former Alty striker Jack Redshaw. Ten minutes later another ex-Alty man, Nyal Bell hit the post for The Tigers.

In the second half Alty won four corners in as many minutes before Johnson was sent off for a lunge on Kosylo (66 mins).

But the visitors were unable to conjure an equaliser, with a Donawa shot against the post their best effort, before a Hyde counter-attack saw substitute Clegg make it 2-0 (85 mins).

  • 85 mins: Peter CLEGG (ALTRINCHAM 0 Hyde United 2)

TEAM NEWS:

Alty were managed tonight by Academy bosses Ross Speight and Danny Jarrett and their charges included eight first-team squad members though all of these had either been fringe players this season and/or were recovering from injury. Not one of them had played in the club's last league game, apart from George Wilson who had made a very late substitute appearance.

There was a first appearance of the season for goalkeeper Ollie Byrne who, until late November 2023, had spent the season on loan at Cork City. Since then he had not even featured in a first-team matchday squad.

As well as the first-teamers, the starting eleven comprised defender Sean Lawton, who has been on loan at Nantwich Town, as well as Academy striker Tom Jones and 16 year-old forward Harrison Howells

BACKGROUND:

In previous rounds of the CSC, Altrincham had overcome 1874 Northwich and Stalybridge Celtic, while Hyde United had beaten Cheadle Heath Nomads and Alsager Town. The Tigers were unbeaten in their previous twelve games and had netted fourteen times in just their last three games.

REPORT:

Altrincham kicked off but the game started uneventfully with neither side proving particularly adept at keeping possession.

Byrne was called into action to punch a cross away (11 mins) before he found himself picking the ball out of the net when Redshaw and Makoli exchanged passes, on the left, before the latter scored past the exposed keeper (16 mins).

As the game passed the midway point of the half the home side had enjoyed more of the ball and attacking intent.

Hyde nearly doubled their lead when Makoli fed Bell but his shot came back off the inside of the post (26 mins). And, soon afterwards, a well-struck effort by Redshaw flew narrowly wide (27 mins).

~ Alty were not providing a threat to the Hyde goal before Mampala headed narrowly over the bar, following a free-kick (32 mins).

Altrincham did get in a shot worthy of the name after 40 minutes when Wilson's effort was held by Eastham at the second attempt. Whilst none of the fringe players was setting the world alight at this stage, Wilson was having an industrious game anchoring the midfield.

The visitors' performance had improved towards the latter stages of the first half but the hosts deserved their lead. As the interval approached Mooney did get to the byline but his shot, from an angle, hit the roof of the stand.

At the start of the second half, Hyde replaced Roscoe with Amado, before they kicked off the action.

The Tigers started brightly, with Redshaw forcing a save from Byrne (46 mins).

But Altrincham then enjoyed their best spell of the evening so far as they earned four corners in as many minutes. The first came from a a Jones cross which Burroughs headed and Eastham pushed roud the post (53 mins). An Alty freekick led to another corner. Then, after a Kosylo shot had curled wide, a third corner arrived.

The fourth corner, taken by Mooney, was punched away to Wilson whose shot was comfortably saved (56 mins).

Despite this pressure, it was Hyde who were the next team to threaten next as Byrne was forced into a smart save from a one v one with Makoli (60 min). A Hyde corner followed but this came to nothing.

When Donawa was felled Jones-Griffiths soon after this, the Hyde man was booked, before Hyde brought on Thomas for Bell (63 mins).

Alty had a chance when Eastham's poor clearance reached Howells but his effort went narrowly wide (65 mins).

Moments later, from a Mooney feed, Kosylo was clattered and the offender, Johnson was shown a red card (66 mins). From the resulting freekick Mooney had a low shot saved (68 mins).

Against the ten men Alty were getting on top and from a Howells feed, Donawa struck the post (68 mins). Four minutes later Howells was replaced by Academy team-mate CHandler (72 mins).

Alty's dominance at this stage included an Angus shot which forced a fine save from Eastham (75 mins). Just after another Angus shot had curled wide, Fearnley came on for Whittingham. Fearnley had netted a hat-trick in Hyde's match on the preceding Saturday (76 mins).

After getting past Amado, Mooney forced a save before Angus won a corner which, again was unproductive (79 mins).

But time was passing and Hyde retained their lead before Shtyhlian came on for his first-team debut in place of Tom Jones (83 mins).

Just after another Altrincham corner, by Mooney, had also come to naught, Hyde wrapped up the match with a counter-attacking goal when Mampala fed substitute Clegg who made it 2-0 for the ten men (85 mins).

Alty pressed to retireve the game but Shtyhlian's header to \eastham was the best effort at this stage before the start of four added minutes. In that time Hyde's Clegg forced a save by Byrne (90+4 mins) before Wilson got himself booked for a foul on Clegg (90+5 mins).

So ended a hugely disappointing performance against a Hyde side which deserved its win.

Alty had now failed to score in any of their most recent three cup ties and this latest result confirmed their exit from the last of the season's three cup competitions, the CSC, FA Cup and FA Trophy.

Wilson was arguably the pick of the Altrincham first-team squad members tonight, whilst others performed competently rather than outstandingly.
