BROMLEY (0) 2
ALTRINCHAM (1) 2

Vanarama National League match
played on Saturday, 23 December, 2023 at 5.30pm.

SUMMARY:

In an eventful game on Bromley's artifical surface, Altrincham and their hosts both had a man sent off and both had the lead during the ninety minutes. It was an all the more creditable result for Alty who were without their ever-present left-back Eddy Jones who is now out for some time with injury.

After Bromley had started strongly, Alty snatched the lead from a counter-attack, their first real attack of the match. Marriott and Dackers fed Conn-Clarke whose low ball from the right was touched into the net, just ahead of a defender, by Newby (13 mins).

Despite continuing home pressure, Alty held onto their lead till the interval but were reduced to ten men just three minutes into the second half when Osborne saw red for a second professional foul, tugging back Krauhaus near half-way..

Soon afterwards Olomola levelled the score for Bromley (56 mins). And the same player then made it 2-1 with a good finish afrom 12 yards fter the ball had been worked to him following a throw on the Ravens' right.

But, almost immediately, a reckless challenge on Wilson by Arthurs near half way saw the Bromley man sent off to render the game ten a side, just a couple of minutes later.

Alty withstood more home pressure before Amaluzor was upended, in added time, 25 yards or so from goal in a central position. Alex Newby delivered an excellent freekick, beating Smith to his right, which made it 2-2 (90+2 mins). Altrincham rode out the remaining five minutes of added time to earn a point.

TEAM NEWS:

Sam Roscoe remained suspended and the three Joneses, Joey and James, and now Eddy, were on the injured list. So George Wilson made his first league start, but played out of position at right-back as Banks moved from right-back to the left-sided berth. Defender Liam Brockbank made his first appearance of the season in a league squad, on the bench, after his ACL injury.

Bromley had made two recent signing in Myles Weston and Levi Amantchi; the former was on the bench but the latter was not even in the squad.

BACKGROUND:

This was a clash of the second=placed Ravens against the fourth-placed Robins. Alty were facing Michael Cheek who had scored six times in eight games against them in his career

REPORT:

Bromley started well and a Whitely shot over the bar was an early indicator of their intent (3 mins). Next, after a home corner, keeper Ross blocked a Topalloj effort and the visitors were then relieved to see Reynolds head a clear chance over the bar from another corner (8 mins). And there was a fourth effort on the Alty goal in the opening stages but Cheek only found the sidenetting, protesting with some credibility that he had been pushed as he shot (12 mins).

Yes it was Altrincham who took a surprising lead with their first effort on target, in the 13th minute. The goal came after Marriott had advanced up the middle and found Dackers who, in turn, fed Chris Conn-Clarke and his low ball from the right was diverted into the net by Newby's shin (13 mins). Conn-Clarke found himself booked in the aftermath of the goal.

Osborne also picked up a booking, some time later, for a tug on the shirt of an opponent (26 mins) as Bromley remained largely on the front foot. It took an important clearance off the line by Baines to save Altrincham after a Cooper clearance went to Omotola who, from the left, chipped Ross (40 mins).

Just before the break, Alty won a corner off Reynolds as Conn-Clarke and Newby combined (43 mins). But Newby found himself cautioned in the aftermath of a foul by Amaluzor, presumably for dissent. Altrincham saw out a late Bromley coner as two added minutes were decreed.

Just three mintes into the second half the already booked Osborne again committed a professional foul, this time on Krauhaus, 45 yards from goal, when Baines's pass did not reach him. The midfielder saw an inevitable seond yellow and then a red card (48 mins). Aided by thir weakened opponents, Bromley soon took advantage and equalised through Omotola in the 56th minute, following a long throw.

Alty responded by sacrificing Conn-Clarke for a now bearded Matty Kosylo (57 mins). Moments later Bromley's Arthurs got himself stupidly sent off for a late and high challenge on Wilson almost on the halfway line (59 mins). Bromley reacted by replacing Passley by Leigh (60 mins).

However, despite this blow, Bromley now took the lead as a Topalloj cross allowed Omotola to take a touch before hitting a left-footed shot into the net for his second goal of the afternoon (63 mins). Ross felt the full force of the marauding Cheek as the goal went in. Though not punished for that, Cheek did see yellow shortly afterwards for a foul on Dackers (68 mins).

On 71 minutes, shortly after Leigh had gone close for Bromley, Linney replaced Dackers for Altrincham and, two minutes later, Dennis replaced Cheek for the Ravens.

When Amaluzor was upended in the box, appeals for a penalty went unheeded before Ross had to make a fine save from Kirk following an incursion on the right (80 mins). Bromley continued to threaten but now Krauhaus muffed a decent chance

Alty's final change saw Angus replace Wilson who had acquitted himself well in his unaccustomed role (83 mins). Out of the blue, however, Alty almost levelled when Angus's shot hit the angle of post and crossbar (84 mins).

With the game into added time, Amaluzor embarked on a mazy run up the middle, before he was fouled in a central position just a few yards outside the "D" of the box, some 25 yards from goal. In the absence of Conn-Clarke, it was Newby who took the kick and he emulated Atrincham's leading scorer with a fine freekick which cleared the ball and beat Smith, to his right, and that levelled the game at 2-2 (90+3 mins).

Bromley will feel they should have put the game to bed in the first half but Altrincham battled hard to limit their chances and showed great resilience to claim their very late equaliser.
