BACKGROUND:

This was Altrincham's fourth pre-season match of 2023 following a 1-0 reverse at Lancaster City, a 4-1 mauling at FC United of Manchester and a 2-4 home defeat against Stockport County.

Wythenshawe's Ericstan Park is to be the home of Altrincham's Academy side in the coming season and they are managed by former Alty youth coach and Trafford FC player Rory Fallon.

This was Town's seventh pre-season game, their most recent being a 3-1 away win at Cheadle Heath Nomads.

REPORT:

Altrincham started well and dominated the opening exchanges before Town grew into the match and won its first corner (7 mins).

Neither keeper had really been tested before Donawa, fed by Conn-Clarke, beat his man and hit a shot which was on target but deflected past former Stalybridge keeper, Greg Hall, to give Altrincham the lead (16 mins).

Fellow winger Amaluzor was causing the home defence problems but an Alty freekick won for a foul on the winger came to nothing (20 mins).

Town suffered a blow when Putnam suffered an apparent hamstring injury and had to be replaced by a No.16 (22 mins).

Although ALtrincham looked comfortable, the hosts won another corner off Donawa (33 mins). Then the home captain, Nock, was booked for an off the ball push on Joey Jones.

As half-time approached Amaluzor fed Eddy Jones but the left-back volleyed over the bar (40 mins) before Amaluzor again got past an opponent but badly sliced a very speculative long-range shot (45 mins).

Six changes were made by Alty for the second half with Jake Cooper, Owen German, George Wilson, Elliot Osborne, Matty Kosylo and trialist Kelan Swales coming on for Joey Jones, James Jones, Isaac Marriott, Chris Conn-Clarke, Justin Donawa and Regan Linney.

It did not take long for Kosylo, now captaining the side, to get forward and feed Swales who forced a good save from Hall but he was given offside in any case (47 mins).

Moments later a shot out of nowhere from Amaluzor came back off the inside of Hall's post (48 mins). The home side made a change of personnel (55 mins) as rain was now falling. Town also won a corner (57 mins).

An ambitious overhead effort from Kosylo (59 mins) was followed by mass changes as five more Altrincham substitutes came on after 61 minutes. They were Ollie Byrne, Chec Thiam (trialist), Sam Roscoe, Kwame Boateng (trialist) and Tom Jones who replaced Gould, Banks, Baines, Eddy Jones and Amaluzor.

The home side also made changes (67 and 77 mins), after which Kosylo received a telling off from the referee for apparent dissent (81 mins). A bad mistake by Town's no.15 set Osborne in on goal only for goalkeeper Hall to halt him with a foul which earned the Wythenshawe man a yellow card (82 mins).

So Altrincham had secured a first win in another match which had started with eleven squad players, only to end with half the side comprising trialists and Academy graduates.
