Vanarama National League match
played on Saturday, 13 August 2022 at 3pm

SUMMARY:

On a sweltering afternoon on the artificial pitch at Hayes Lane, Altrincham secured a deserved point despite having to field striker and captain Jordan Hulme in goal for more than half an hour's playing time following an injury to goalkeeper Matt Gould.

Altrincham started the game well and, before a mid-half drinks break on a sweltering afternoon, Ryan Colclough was much in evidence as an attacking threat. The visitors won two corners but the score remained goalless at this stage (24 mins).

Indeed Alty led the corner count, with four flag-kicks in the first half-hour, before Bennett forced a great save from Charles-Cook frollowing a Colclough feed (32 mins). Half-time arrived with the game still goalless.

Bromley started the second period the better but without seriously threatening to score before Alty suffered a severe blow when goalkeeper Gould was injured as he landed badly after punching clear under a challenge (58 mins).

Following lengthy treatment, Gould had to go off and striker Jordan Hulme went in goal (64 mins). With first-choice goalkeeper Byrne not yet having received his international clearance from Wales, there was no keeper on the Altrincham bench.

Alty protected Hulme well and neither he nor Gould had a save to make before ten added minutes started. Alty survived some added-time pressure but almost scored themselves in the final added minute.

BACKGROUND:

In this second match of the campaign, both clubs were seeking their first win.

REPORT:

Bromley kicked off but it was Altrincham who started the game the better, winning the first corner inside three minutes as a Colclough cross was deflected out of play. Good work from Hulme and Lundstram had got Colclough into a threatening position.

It was to be almost another ten minutes before the hosts put together a decent move. But the visitors continued to have the better of the opening stages as Bennett's excellent ball found Colclough who pulled his shot wide (13 mins).

At the other end Whitely got in a cross but no one was on the end of it (18 mins). Colclough continued to threaten for Alty as he got in a shot, which defelected over the bar for a second corner for the visitors (19 mins).

A drinks break saw Andy Woodman animatedly talking to his underperforming players (24 mins). But t had litte immediate effect as two more Altrincham corners followed in the next five minutes or so. Between these corners, a foul on the hardworking Hulme by Webster, also gave Alty a freekick as they looked the better side.

Next a Brockbank ball led to a Colcough cross which Bennett directed at goal but the keeper made a fine save (32 mins).

Belatedly Bromley came to life as a Cheek shot deflected to Gould (37 mins). However, the pace of the game was dropping off as the heat took its toll.

Next, Baines, who had a good game, made an important challenge to block Fisher as he shot (43 mins). And just before added time was announced as being three minutes in duration, Hamman went down in the box but the referee rejected the home side's appeals.

Bromley brought on Dennis for Hannam at the interval and went to three at the back. The hosts started the half the better side but still Gould remained untroubled.

After 55 minutes Bromley created a good chance as a Fisher cross just evaded Bloomfield. But then Gould punched away a Fisher cross under pressure and seemed to land awkwardly (58 mins). He was soon surrounded by medical staff as he remained prostrate.

During more than six minutes of treatment a stretcher was produced but the Alty keeper finally managed to walk off but was clearly unable to continue with what seemed to be a head injury. With no keeper on the bench, striker and captain Jordan Hulme donned the green jersey as striker Dinanga replaced the stricken keeper from the bench. At the same time the hosts brought on Forster for Fisher (64 mins).

Perhaps sensing a weakness in goal, Bush tried an ambitious forty-yarder which went off target (70 mins). Alty got up the other end to win a corner through Mullarkey (72 mins).

Next, Coleman replaced Vennings (76 mins). But then Mullarkey got forward again and won a corner with a deflected shot before a home move eneded when Whitely shot over the bar (80 mins).

Goalkeeper Hulme was now booked for timewasting (80 mins) and Colclough forced a save as Alty refused to lie down (84 mins). Pringle and Cooper soon replaced Bennett and Brockbank (85 mins) before Hulme collected a ball as Dennis attempted to chip him but the stand-in keeper was not to be troubled seriously during his period of goal.

Ten added minutes were decreed during which Bromley applied plenty of pressure but without seriously looking like scoring. And, at the death, Alty nearly snatched the points as Dinanga and Pringle combined for Conn Clarke to force a good save (90+9 mins).

So Altrincham emerged with a merited point in a match in which they worked the opposition keeper far more than Bromley threatened at the other end. Alty need Byrne's international clearance by Tuesday or an emergency will be required as Gould looks very unlikely to be fit for the long trip to Maidenhead.
