STOKE CITY XI (1) 5
ALTRINCHAM (1) 1

Pre-season match
played on Tuesday, 26 July 2022 at 2pm

SUMMARY:

Loanee Chris Conn-Clarke put Altrincham ahead with a fine shot from 20-plus yards (34 mins), only for Stoke to level the score soon afterwards as ex-Premiership striker Dwight Gayle netted from close range.

Half-time was reached with the score one apiece. Roxburgh and Brockbank were replaced by two trialists for the second half whilst Stoke made multiple changes.

The hosts took the lead after nine minutes of the second half when a low ball was played into the goalmouth and, although Byrne blocked an initial attempt, and a defender halted a follow-up, Emre Tezgel found the net.

Stoke went 3-1 up in 57 minutes through Jack Griffiths and two minutes later it was 4-1 when Will Smallbone netted as Alty conceded three times in a short spell.

With Alty 4-1 down, Alty brought on Dinanga and Cooper, and some trialists so only Byrne, Pugh, Conn-Clarke and Colclough remained from the starters.

Next, Academy players Morton, Hussain and Gould replaced Conn-Clarke, Colclough and Byrne. And then Pugh was replaced by Rodgers-Morris as Stoke added a fifth through D’Margio Wright-Phillips.

TEAM NEWS:

Stoke City fielded a strong side which included new signings Dwight Gayle and Will Smallbone, as well as Emre Tezgel, D'Margio Wright-Phillips and Jack Griffiths.

Altrincham included one trialist in the starting eleven in midfielder Tom Pugh, who had been released by Scunthorpe United at the end of last season, having made his debut in the EFL Trophy in 2018. However, after signing a contract for last season, he missed the last few months of the campaign with an injury sustained in February 2022 by a challenge which earned him a second yellow-card.

Pugh had played anonymously as no.15 in the previous friendly against Stockport County.
