ALTRINCHAM (0) 2

Pre-season match
played on Tuesday, 12 July 2022 at 7.45pm

SUMMARY:

The first half was completed without a goal from either side. Alty had more of the possession but created few openings whilst Trafford won several corners. Trailist Gribbin had a good forty-five minutes on the left wing for the visitors.

For the second half Alty fielded only Gould and Roxburgh from their squad plus nine trialists. Altrincham Second Half: 1. Matt Gould, 2. Aidan Roxburgh, 3. Zac Mills, 4. Ryan Grant, 5. Scott Butler, 6. Mitch Rose, 7. Isaac Modi, 8. Hayden Campbell, 9. Alex Samizadeh, 10. Harry Bunn. 11. Jack Hindle.

Despite being a side of unfamiliar faces, the second-half Alty side started well. Trafford too, fielded a new side after the interval but the game remained goalless at the three-quarter time drinks break. But Modi's back-post header finally broke the deadlock (75 mins) following a move involving Campbell and Hindle.

From a Bunn corner Butler made it two for Alty with an impressive volley in the eightieth minute and that is how the game ended.

TEAM NEWS:

Altrincham fielded two separate elevens in each half. The second-half team largely comprised trialists, nine in fact.

The first-half team included just one trialist. He was Callum Gribbin, who was not identified by name on Saturday when he played on the right wing against West Didsbury and Chorlton, but was named tonight. After spending time at Manchester United, more recently he has been at Radcliffe FC.

For the second half Alty fielded only Gould and Roxburgh from their squad plus nine trialists. Mills, Rose, Campbell and Bunn were all in the squad at West Didsbury last Saturday; the rest of the trialists were appearing for the first time.

Likewise, Trafford fielded a strong first-half selection but the second half saw them deploy six youth team players in their eleven.

BACKGROUND:

This was Altrincham's third pre-season game after the double-header on Saturday when one Alty XI had lost at West Didsbury and another had drawn 2-2 at Wythenshawe Town.

REPORT:

On a warm evening, on the customary immaculate pitch at Shawe View, Altrincham kicked off. After a quiet opening, the hosts won the first corner (6 mins) and also won a potentially threatening freekick on 13 minutes. Matthews hit this to goalkeeper Byrne. However, between these events, a freekick by Osborne forced a save from Cooper (10 mins).

Next, after Marriott and Gribbin had conspired, Osborne's cross/shot just evaded Dinanga (16 mins).

Gribbin was making an imporession but when he now cut in menacingly his shot was deflected for a corner (23 mins). Alty were enjoying more of the possession but when Gribbin's cutback and low cross found Dinanga he touched it wide (24 mins).

Pringle then shot off-target before a mis-header by former Alty man Mulholland allowed Marriott an opening but he fired poorly over the bar as Alty failed translate possession into a goal threat (30 mins). A Pringle effort was much better and won a corner as the keeper tipped it over the bar

As the break approached, Gribbin set up Osborne who forced a good save from Cooper at the cost of a corner (42 mins).

But the interval arrived with the game goalles as Alty's recurrent failure to be ruthless in front of goal manifested itself once more.

So both sides changed their elevens for the second half. Whilst Alty included two squad members (Gould and Roxburgh) and four of the trialists who were in their squad on Saturday (Bunn, Campbell, Mills and Rose), another five trialists appeared for the first time in Alty colours (Grant, Butler, Modi, Samizadeh and Hindle)

Alty started brightly with a good run by Roxburgh and then a fine ball from Campbell which led to Samizadeh winning an early corner.

The visitors were getting on top but, next, a good run by Bunn was undone by a poor shot (59 mins). Trafford made a change almost midway through the half as Dorney came on but Alty soon won a corner through Bunn (67 mins). From this, a Butler attempt cleared the bar, before a drinks break was called by the referee.

The break seemed to boost Alty as Roxburgh soon went on another good run but Campbell's resulting shot went to the keeper. Alty were not be denied however as, soon afterwards, Campbell and Hindle combined and Modi headed home atthe back post to give Altrincham a 1-0 lead (74 mins).

Trafford now made a third substitution before Bunn fed Campbell who shot narrowly wide (77 mins). Alty's dominance at this stage continued with a threatening run by Samizadeh. And then Campbell got in a fine 25-yard shot which Jordan did well to tip over the bar for a corner (79 mins).

Bunn took the corner and Butler executed an impressive volley to make it 2-0 (80 mins).

Shortly afterwards, Modi hit the inside of the post as the assembly of trialists, unfamiliar with each other, nevertheless showed some good teamwork and individual skill in the second half. And the chances continued to come as a fine ball from Campbell gave Samizadeh a chance but he put it over the bar (89 mins).

With manager Parkinson having declared that he would only be signing one or two more players for the coming season, as the Club wrestles with assembling a competitive full-time squad from a modest budget, most of tonight's trialists will presumably not make the Altrincham squad for the coming season.
