WYTHENSHAWE TOWN (0) 2
ALTRINCHAM (2) 2

Pre-season match
played on Saturday, 9 July 2022 at 3.30pm

SUMMARY:

After goals by Dinanga and Barrows had put them two up in the first half, Wythenshawe had a much better second half which was not aided for the visitors by numerous substitutions which disrupted the team's flow.

The hosts got an early goal in the second half before a late penalty for handball earned them a draw.

TEAM NEWS:

Only some ninety minutes after another Alty squad had completed a friendly at West Didsbury, this stronger team took the field a few miles away in Baguley. All eleven starters were players who were on forms to play this coming season with no trialists involved.

Six Aacdemy players were named on the bench

Barrows and Brockbank were new signings and Hussain was an Academy player last season, otherwise all eight had played for the first team at Alty though, in Lundstram's case, that had not been a couple of seasons ago.

BACKGROUND:

In their new 2022-23 kit, Altrincham faced their near neighbours who had finished third in the NWCFL Premier last season.

Whilst these Altrincham players were starting their first pre-season game, the hosts had already completed two friendly fixtures.

REPORT:

A mistake by Wythenshawe alloed Pringle to gain possession and after evading a challenge his cross presented Dinanga with a close-range header which gave Altrincham a fifteenth-minute lead.

Having netted thirteen times in 15 appearances for Dartford last season whilst on loan from Alty, the striker had opened the scoring in his first pre-season game just as he had done last summer.

Alty went 2-0 up ten minutes later when a corner was met by a firm header from Barrows (25 mins). An away win looked a formality at this stage.

But Town responded with a good long-range shot which Gould saved (31 mins).

Former Alty keeper Elliott Wynne then got away with an error. Jackson got the ball and rounded the keeper but, with the goal defended by a single Wythenshawe player, he could only strike the ball against the upright (42 mins).

Wythenshawe got back into the game very soon after the interval when a fine run by Palma culminated in a close-range goal for Jack Coop (48 mins).

The hosts the missed a decent chance to level the score when no.10 failed to convert a headed chance. A minute later at the other end, a Dinanga shot forced an excellent save from Wynne at the cost of a corner.

Two successive Alty corners came and went before Rodgers-Morris, one of the six Academy players signed on contract recently, came on as a substitute (61 mins).

Ryan Morton, another of the Academy graduates soon came on for Dinanga (74 mins) and Tom Jones, who had been at Alty since his primary school years, was also introduced at the same time.

For Alty, Lundstram had impressed on his return to the club but his side were not looking comfortable with their lead at this stage.

And the home side's second-half improvement was rewarded with a spot-kick. Following a header from a corner, which Gould had saved, the referee spotted a handball. Brad Byrne stepped up and sent Gould the wrong way from the spot to make it 2-2 (79 mins).

A freekick in the last minute almost led to a Wythenshawe winner but Bryan's miskick spared Alty's blushes and the game ended a draw.
