ALTRINCHAM 0
TORQUAY UNITED 0

Vanarama National League match
played on Saturday, 29 May, 2021 at 12.30pm

SUMMARY:

Altrincham completed the season as they had started it with a goalless draw at the J. Davidson Stadium; their only goalless league matches of the campaign.

Torquay United arrived with second-place already secure and, with it, a place in the promotion play-offs guaranteed. Similarily Altrincham could not move out of their league position of seventeenth place, whatever the outcome of this game.

And that predictable outcome for both sides was a significant factor in a game which never reached the heights for a gate of more than one thousand who had been starved of live football for more than a year till the pervious week.

SCORERS:

REFEREE: Mr Martin Woods

ATTENDANCE: 1,032 home supporters only
TEAM NEWS:

Matty Kosylo started only his second game in the last thirteen league fixtures, following injury, taking the place of Connor Kirby in the starting eleven.

A bigger surprise saw Fisayo Adarabioyo named on the bench, the striker being named in a squad for only the second time in 31 league matches after his injury in game eleven of the campaign.

His inclusion meant that Sean Williams dropped out of the squad.

Shaun Densmore started again which left him marooned on 398 career starts for Altrincham whilst right-back Joel Senior was again deployed at left-back despite the inclusion of left-back Reagan Ogle in the suqad.

Torquay made numerous changes as they clearly had one eye on the play-offs.

BACKGROUND:

Altrincham had been fortunate to have three home games in a week to complete the league season in front of limited numbers of their own supporters, following the easing of Covid restrictions.

REPORT:

Altrincham started the more brightly of the two teams with an early run by Mooney and the game's first corner, conceded as the Gulls' keeper Corvolan scooped a shot round the post (6 mins). The Brazilian keeper was also less than wholly convincing in dealing with the corner as he flapped at the ball, a second corner resulting.

Next, a late challenge by Hannigan earned the Alty centre-back a yellow card (12 mins). Little duly struck the freekick into the defensive wall.

Like Hannigan, Andrews soon picked up a caution for a foul, on Smith (19 mins). Midway through the half Torquay won their first corner following a Moxey long throw (24 mins). A second corner soon followed, as the visitors enjoyed the upper hand at this point.

Next a good run by Randell ended with a low cross which Lemonheigh-Evans flocked at goal only for Thompson to make a smart block (26 mins). This was by some distance the best move of the match so far.

Play went through a scrappy spell either side of the half-hour mark before Alty's best move to date. This involved Colcough and Kosylo and ended with a fine shot by Smith which brought agood save from Corvolan, to his left (35 mins).

Another good spell of Alty passing was followed by a collision between Colcough and Randell which ended with both men injured. The Alty man had his elbow bandaged whilst a blood injury necessitated a prolonged stoppage to stem the flow of blood from the Torquay player (38 mins).

In added time a Mooney shot was blocked well by Corvolan but the first half ended disappointingly goalless.

Torquay made two changes for the second half as Buse and Waters replaced Hall and Andrews (46 mins).

The visitors won an early corner but this, like probing runs by Mooney and Kosylo for the hosts, came to nothing.

Better was a cross from Moxey which Randell headed narrowly wide (55 mins). Cameron then wasted a good chance when he poked the ball over the bar as Mullarkey made a challnge (56 mins).

Altrincham's first change saw Peers replace Kosylo (58 mins) and shortly afterwards, Hardy replaced Mooney (62 mins).

Good work by Hardy soon led to a half-chance for Peers but he was barged over(64 mins). Soon afterwards Hancock and Hardy fed Densmore and his low cross gave Peers a good opening. But the substitute swiped his effort comfortably over the bar (68 mins).

Soon after a Torquay corner had come and gone, Umerah replaced Cameron for The Gulls (72 mins). For Altrincham, Hancock gave way to Kirby with 16 minutes remaining.

The game drifted on with Waters shooting wide (82 mins) and Little hitting a freekick into the Altrincham wall (86 mins).

Lewis picked up a late booking for a foul on Smith (90 mins) before added time included an Altrincham corner, which led to Colclough firing milles over the bar to conclude a disappointing finale to the season.
