ALTRINCHAM (0) 1
GUISELEY (0) 1

Vanarama National League North match
played on Monday, 27 August 2018, at 3pm

SUMMARY

Altrincham were left still seeking their first home win of the season after letting a hard-earned lead slip to a workmanlike Guiseley.

Altrincham had got themselves ahead in the 57th minute when Hulme hooked the ball home after Jones had won a header from a deep corner from Daniels and directed the ball back across goal for Hulme. The hosts looked to be in control after that until, out of the blue, a rasping 25-yarder from Halls found the back of Elliot Wynne's net. That goal and some substitutions sparked a better spell from the visitors who will have been the happier side with the draw.

A needless blow to Altrincham was the fifth booking of the season for Jordan Hulme.

TEAM NEWS

Altrincham were without John Johnston and Josh Hancock who had both started last Saturday. Johnston has a hamstring problem whilst the reasons for Hancock's asbence from the squad were unclear. Also not involved in the squad today were Hampson (broken bone in hand), Richman and Peers though all three were in attendance. However, James Poole was in the squad for the first time this season after recovering from last season's injury.

Former Chester boss Marcus Bignot included a couple of familiar ex-Chester faces in his Guiseley team, in the shape of Andy Halls and Kingsley James.

BACKGROUND

Promoted Altrincham, without a home win this season, welcomed relegated Guiseley, without an away win, to the J. Davidson Stadium.

REPORT

After Guiseley had kicked off towards the Golf Road end, Alty keeper Wynne had an early scare as he was closed down and had to execute a smart bit of footwork to avoid embarrassment (3 mins). Otherwise the game had a pretty quiet opening in which the visitors gained the match's first corner in the eighth minute.

As early as the 13th minute, Jordan Hulme, who was booked on Saturday for dissent and had four bookings to his name already this season, was lectured by the referee for dissent.

An impressive nine-pass move by Altrincham ended with Hulme netting but the whistle for offside had gone as the offside White fed the striker from left of goal (21 mins). At the other end, former Barnsley striker Odejayi failed to find the target with an unchallenged header from a Guiseley corner (23 mins).

The referee now called over captain Jake Moult and summoned Jordan Hulme for his second dressing down for dissent (27 mins). Next, from a lay-off by Daniels, a 20-yarder from Williams just cleared the bar (27 mins). The fairly even and scrappy game continued but, in the ten minutes before half time, Altrincham got on top.

Next, Williams, Densmore and Dale combined with the last named's low cross going across the goalmouth. Here, Hulme let the ball run on to Harrop but he was only able to steer a good chance into the side netting at the back post (35 mins).

After this, an impressive run upfield by Hannigan got the ball to Hulme whose underpowered shot was saved comfortably. Hulme did much better a minute later. Harrop fed Williams and then via Dale, Harrop got the ball back and, from his cross from the left, a stretching Hulme forced a good block by the keeper (40 mins).

But half-time arrived with the scoresheet blank.

Half-Time: ALTRINCHAM 0
GUISELEY 0

After Guiseley had won the half's first corner, Altrincham won the second flag-kick when Hulme and White combined well on the left (56 mins). A melee followed the corner in which Alty had a penalty appeal refused. But another corner had been won and, this time from the right, Daniels hit the ball beyond the back post. Jones did well to head the ball back across goal where Hulme hooked it into the net from close range to give Alty a 1-0 lead (57 mins).

Alty dominated the next ten minutes as they kept Guiseley back in their own half. But when Moult was penalised for a routine foul on Odejayi 30 yards from the Alty goal, Hulme trotted back to help to defend it. Whether it was the for a previous foul or because he had passed some gratuitous comment as he passed the referee, the Alty striker was booked (67 mins). Having picked up five cards in his last six matches, Hulme now faces a suspension.

Hulme soon showed the positive side of his Jekyll and Hyde behaviour with a smart flicked effort which just looped over the bar (70 mins). But with Altrincham having looked comfortable since going ahead, they were suddenly pegged back as Halls advanced and launched a fierce, low shot which flew past Wynne into the net to make it 1-1 (71 mins).

Guiseley immediately made an already planned double substitution as Thompson and former Shaw Lane man, Clayton, replaced Dyche and Odejayi.

The goal animated the prev‭iously lethargic Guiseley and they won three corners in the ten minutes following their goal. Between the first and second of this sequence, James Poole made a welcome return from injury, replacing Daniels (78 mins). Alty then themselves a corner, which Poole took; this was headed away to Williams who volleyed narrowly wide (84 mins).

After a low cross from White had flashed across the Guisleley goalmouth, Halls felled Harrop and was booked (89 mins). Five added minutes saw Clayton also booked (90+3 mins) before the whistle concluded an ultimately disappointing afternoon for the hosts.
