REPORT

The game had kicked off several minutes early, on a clear and dry night in Cumbria, and the opening stages were fairly even and uneventful. After Havern had punched away a freekick from Jolly, Oyibo won the visitors a corner, from which Knowles glanced a header wide (9 mins).

Folowing a throw in by Fisher, which Workington believed to be a foul one, Davis put in an impressive 30-yard shot which keeper McAleavey did well to push out for a corner (15 mins). The corner was half cleared to Aspinall, who struck the outside of the keeper's left upright.

Alty were now getting on top and another long range shot from Davis flew wide (19 mins). Another Alty corner came and went but then the hosts took the lead against the run of play.

The goal arrived after a cross from the right was diverted just wide of his own goal by Dulson. The resulting corner was punched clear by Havern but the ball was played back into the goalmouth from the right by Graham. At the back post Short headed in with the ball seeming to go in off the woodwork (27 mins).

Altrincham had a great chance to equalize just two minutes later. Knowles played in Leather but his dink over the advancing keeper somewhow missed the empty net (29 mins).

Next, an Altrincham freekick by Fisher was gathered by the Reds' keeper at the second attempt before a Workington shot was blocked (32 mins). A fine run by Hebson led to him cutting inside and forcing a fine save from Havern, diving to his left (36 mins).

Just before half time, Oyibo got forward from a good feed by Davis and was tripped by Hebson, who was booked (43 mins). So, Alty went in to the interval trailing 0-1.

A good run by Leather in the 47th minute ended with a shot wide when, perhaps, a pass to Newton may have been a better option. Next, a shot across goal by Oyibo confirmed Alty's attacking intent for the second half.

Although Alty now had more of the forward momentum, Workington were defending well. After 55 minutes Alty captain Davis was lectured with Workington's Todd after a minor spat. Soon afterwards, a Workington defender almost headed past his own keeper but McAleavey did well to tip the ball wide for a corner. Oyibo's corner then bounced off Leather to the keeper (56 mins).

AFter 58 minutes Workington introduced Wiser for Graham and moments later Dominic O'Gara came on for Knowles for the visitors (29 mins). So, Alty now had two up front as O'Gara joined the previously lone forager, Leather.

Altrincham continued to set the pace and Davis was fortunate to evade a booking with a high challenge in which his boot seemed to catch the face of Moynan, who needed treatment before continuing (65 mins).

Midway through the half, Oyibo broke into the box from the right and the ball was judged to have been handled by a Workington player. The referee awarded a spot kick and Davis converted this, though the keeper got a hand to the shot (68 mins).

Although the visitors were still on top, they struggled to create clear chances and they were given a warning of Workington's attacking prowess when the impressive Dryden fed Stamp, whose shot forced a save from Havern (77 mins).

Next, Davis won the ball well 25 yards out and got it forward for Leather to chase against the outcoming goalkeeper. As the two players and the ball came together, the ball broke towards goal and Leather managed to catch it and tap it in from near the left upright to give Altrincham a 2-1 lead (78 mins). Within a minute it was 3-1 as Leather scored again. Once more he chased a ball up the middle and poked it past the keeper (79 mins).

Immediately Leather was withdrawn and Iacovou came on for him (79 mins). Workington won two corners in succession before introducing Short from the bench (82 mins).

But Altrincham now won a corner of their own, which O'Gara nodded over the bar, Havern then had to come out smartly to smother a Workington through ball and his long clearance again caused the Workington central defence a problem as it enabled O'Gara to get free and slide the ball into the net to the advancing keeper's left. The three Alty goals from open play were of a similar nature, with a striker finishing balls fed through the middle of the home defence (85 mins).

Workington were not giving up and they won themselves two corners in quick succession which Altrincham defended well. Alty's Wagster replaced Oyibo on the right wing in the 88th minute and the game soon went into added time. At 4-1 up, Newton got himself unnecessarily booked when he kicked the ball away at a Workington freekick (90+1 mins). From the Workington freekick Havern came out for the ball and, it seems, in reaching for the ball was judged to have fouled an opponent. From the spot kick, Hebson made the score 2-4 (90+2 mins).

Next up is another away tie for Altrincham, at either Gateshead or Newcastle Benfield.
