REPORT

Although Altrincham went into this game with eight of their squad unavailable, they started well and enjoyed the better of the opening period. From a sixth minute corner, the unmarked Aspinall just failed to make contact with a header. In particular, Leather's pace, up front, and Oyibo's skill on the right were giving Warrington problems. Warrington made an early change (14 mins) but neither side made clear chances in this period.

The visitors made a change (19 mins) before Davis was lectured for dissent. At an Alty freekick, the visitors' number seven also found himself in the referee's book (23 mins). Following this, Robbins got in an effort across the face of the Warrington goal.

Warrington now wasted a freekick, from 25 yards, with an effort which went well over the bar (25 mins) before a Davis run ended with a cross which just evaded Leather (29 mins). Just after the half-hour, the visitors made a double change, a luxury Alty could not afford with just two men on their bench.

A fine run from Oyibo led to a freekick. Taken by McGloin, Davis got in a good header but it cleared the bar (35 mins). Warrington now came more into the game as their nos. 12 and 15 each shot wide (38 mins).

Warrington continued to press towards half-time but the last chance of the half fell to Alty's Oyibo, who volleyed wide (45+1 mins).

Alty had an early scare when Havern came out to punch but, in the process, an opponent ended up on the ground (47 mins). However, play resumed with a goalkick. At the other end Oyibo soon threatened again before Wagster was put clear. But the Alty man's shot was too close to the keeper, who blocked the effort (48 mins).

O'Gara now replaced Wagster (55 mins) and the substitute was soon making an impact. From Leather's pass, O'Gara's shot forced a finger-tip save which went for a corner.

Play was now quite even and Warrington won the game's next corner, followed by another for the hosts, won by O'Gara (69 mins). A punt from Havern was then well nodded on by O'Gara and this set Leather running at goal. His low shot beat the keeper to give Alty a 73rd minute lead.

Altrincham continued to press but officials' decisions were increasingly being questioned by both sides. Warrington won another corner and Alty were slow to react before being able to clear the danger (82 mins). As Warrington pushed forward, the visitors made a strong appeal for hands against Dulson but the referee waved play on. Altrincham made two late changes as Smith and the returning Wagster replaced Leather and Oyibo (84 mins).

Warrington went close to a leveller when their no.12 fed no.16, whose cross shot kissed the front of the crossbar; a Warrington corner soon followed (85 mins). An increasingly tetchy match now saw Davis booked for persistent dissent. Then a contested decision over a throw-in led to a melee before calm was restored and the closing minutes were played out.
