REPORT

The game kicked off seven minutes late, with a few familiar faces opposing Altrincham in the Hyde team. Alty were without captain Sam Heathcote and also had several other squad members unavailable.

Altrincham took an early lead when Arrowsmith got between two opponents to score from right of centre in the seventh minute.

However, Hyde equalised in the 16th minute when their centre-forward, Boyle, netted from the left with a shot off the inside of the far post, after his initial effort had been blocked by Burrows in the Alty goal.

The Altrincham defence was then caught napping as a ball up the middle went over the home team's back line and left Boyle clear to lob the advancing but exposed goalkeeper, Burrows, and put his side 2-1 up (20 mins).

But Altrincham responded with a neat move involving Foster and Dwyer, which ended with Foster restoring parity to the score (27 mins).

After Dwyer had been booked (29 mins), there was some confusion as Hyde were awarded a corner after a goalkick had initially seemed to be signalled. From the corner, the referee spotted an apparent push by a defender and a penalty kick was awarded. Boyle completed his hat-trick from the spot to make it 3-2 to Hyde after 36 minutes.

Hyde's Fitton was booked (42 mins) and the visitors were then pegged back to 3-3 with the final act of the first half. This was an excellent goal scored by right-back Clancy who had got forward to net from the edge of the box (45 mins).

Altrincham midfielder Taylor, who had a good game, was booked six minutes after the break but, shortly afterwards, Altrincham retook the lead. Following a corner, centre-back McGrath scored from 12 yards to make it 4-3 (55 mins).

But, another Altrincham booking followed when Arrowsmith was cautioned for dissent in the 57th minute. Altrincham extended their lead just after the hour mark when Dwyer set off on an impressive run up the inside left channel before finishing well (61 mins).

After 71 minutes Coffey replaced Dwyer but the visitors now halved their deficit when Fitton scored with a finely struck effort from outside the box, left of centre (75 mins). The visitors's substitute, Platt was soon added to the referee's lengthy list of cautions four minutes later.

Altrincham finally wrapped up the match with a sixth goal, in the 88th minute, scored by Cain, after good work from Arrowsmith. In what turned out to be more than six minutes of added time, Bond came on for Arrowsmith, who had suffered an injury (90+2 mins).

After the game, manager George Heslop and his assistant Chris Adams will have been delighted by the result but will be looking for a tighter defensive performance against Irlam Town in the FA Youth Cup next Monday.
