REPORT

Due to the bad weather and a backlog of fixtures, both teams went into this match with problems. Prescot Cables had had to play a cup-tie the day before, therefore going into the match suffering from tiredness and injuries. In contrast, Altrincham were playing only their second game in eight weeks.

In these circumstances, Altrincham's instructions were to play at a high tempo from the kick-off. The pitch was in good condition. However, the weather got worse and the game was played in a steady drizzle.

Altrincham's tactics reaped a very early reward, in the third minute, when Blaine Whiteside fed his fellow striker and Kieran Madden gave Altrincham an early 1-0 lead. Altrincham had a greater percentage of the possession and spent most of the first twenty minutes in the Prescot half. This came to fruition when Joel Brownhill cut in from the left and was brought down in the area for a penalty, which was duly converted by Ben Shawcross to make it 2-0.

Shortly afterwards Joel Brownhilll provided Kieran Madden with his second and Altrincham's third goal. However, this was to prove Altrincham's undoing as their passing and movement got very sloppy in exceution. But half time was reached with Altrincham leading 3-0.

Despite being warned in the interval about their attitude to the game in the second half, Altrincham came very close to conceding this lead. Instead of continuing with their passing approach, the Robins proceeded to make individual runs through the middle but kept losing the ball. Eventually, Prescot Cables got back into the game with a goal scored in the 54th minute.

Things went from bad to worse with Brownhill getting a needless booking. So, Niall Sheridan replaced Brownhill in the 64th minute. This was followed by Michael Linney replacing Blaine Whiteside in the 74th minute. Then Prescot got really on top when Bates brought down the Cables' centre forward, who scored from the spot, making it only 3-2 to Altrincham.

However, Altrincham were unlucky when Sheridan won a header, just in the home team's half, and Madden apparently completed his hat-trick but it was disallowed as the referee had blown fractionally before, due to an injury to Sheridan. The final whistle blew minutes later and Altrincham had completed their first double of the season.
