REPORT

Report based on information kindly provided by George Heslop.

Curzon Ashton had brought the kick-off forward to 2pm for a match played on a 3G artificial pitch, situated next to the Tameside Stadium, home of Curzon's first team. The teams had drawn 2-2 in the reverse fixture at Wythenshawe Town which had opened the 2009-10 league season. Since that game, Altrincham had won all five of their matches. However, Alty manager George Heslop had to make four changes to his squad as goalkeeper Fossdyke and outfield players McAughtrie and Lavelle were all injured and Bromiley-Blackburn was ill. In the starting line-up Whiteside and Sheridan came in at the expense of Madden and Brownhill, who were on the bench.

The game started slowly with Altrincham needing to get to grips with the unaccustomed playing surface on which the ball moved about quickly, causing themselves some initial problems with their passing. However, the lads stuck to the game plan and gradually increased the tempo, moving the ball well down the flanks.

In the 30th minute, a ball played along the ground through the middle by Dan Shaw, set Blaine Whiteside free and he finished from distance with a clinical shot to make it 1-0 to the visitors. Just before half-time Niall Sheridan signalled that he could not continue as he felt unwell - a bug has affected several Alty players recently and Niall had only had one recent training session as a consequence. But before Joel Brownhill could be brought on as his replacement, the referee blew the whistle for half-time.

Brownhill started the second half in the left-wing position vacated by Sheridan. Three minutes into the half, an Alty corner from the left came to Rory Bradbury who nodded it down to Whiteside, who was in front of the goalkeeper. Blaine cleverly back-heeled the ball into the net to record both his and his side's second goal.

From this point, Altrincham turned the screw and dominated the rest of the match. Their passing improved tremendously and their movement off the ball caused the opposition problems. On the hour mark came the best move of the match. Ben Shawcross initiated the sequence when he played the ball up the right side to Whiteside. His cross was met by Shaw who made it 3-0.

After 70 minutes, Michael Linney gave way to Kieran Madden, up front, as the game continued in Altrincham's favour. In the 74th minute, Whiteside completed his hat-trick and made it 4-0 to Altrincham. With 10 minutes left, Marsden replaced Bates at centre-back, as Altrincham completed their sixth win this season in seven competitive matches.
