YOUTH REPORT

Altrincham had to change to blue shirts before kick-off as the ref feared a clash of colours from Alty's red striped kit. Early on, Alty went close when Francis was just off target from Bailey's cross from the right (3 mins). Alty began to get on top and won a corner after which Woodley also won one (18 mins). Following an excellent long throw from Oliver, Madeley's good shot was well saved (20 mins). Woodley continued to put themselves under pressure by conceding freekicks at regular intervals and it was not until almost half an hour had gone before Woodley seriously threatened but Murphy, who had a fine game, got in a good tackle.

Next, Madeley seized on some confusion in the Sports' defence and nipped in ahead of the keeper to try and nod the ball over him but Hughes got to it (30 mins). When McNally stepped in front of Crane, who was working hard in midfield, the Woodley man was booked (31 mins). After 38 minutes a superb chip forward by Crane cleared a defender and reached Bailey, in the box. He brought the ball down superbly and got in a shot but Hughes saved well. The keeper again kept out Alty when he tipped an effort from Bailey over the bar (44 mins). But half time arrived with Alty having failed to convert their dominance into goals.

A similar pattern of play continued in the second half as Altrincham pressed forward and Madeley had two shots at goal in the opening five minutes. Then the same player forced a fine save from Hughes after a good build-up by Oliver and Francis had ended in a smart flick by Bailey to his strike partner (56 mins).

Just as Woodley began to get into the match, winning two corners round the hour mark, Alty finally took the lead. The goal came when a Sports' defender nodded an Oliver long-throw to the back post, where Madeley lashed the ball into the net (64 mins). After 72 minutes Woodley brought on Wilde for Wilson and a minute later Killilea was booked for dissent after being harshly penalised. Watson then did well to see off a Woodley attack but from the resulting corner, Sanckson was allowed a free header to level the scores (74 mins). At this point, Lillie replaced Francis for Altrincham.

Play was now end to end but when a Madeley shot was spilled by Hughes, no one followed up to convert it. James replaced Fradley for Woodley. A Browne drive produced an Alty corner before a fine cross from Killilea was turned narrowly wide at the back post by Bailey (84 mins). As the game went into added time, Woodley gained three successive corners. Five minutes of added time were played and in the last of these Madeley rounded the keeper but could not find a team-mate in the box.

For extra time, Jason Melling-Fong replaced Ben Oliver, so Jack Kimber switched to left back. Play soon stopped for the third time in the match for a Woodley cramp victim to be treated before an Alty corner came and went. Hapley was then booked for reasons that were unclear (96 mins). Bebbington replaced Connoma (99 mins). When Madeley was fouled on the edge of the box, Lillie's freekick was clearly stopped by a hand-ball in the wall and the Alty man was booked for protesting when the referee gave nothing (102 mins). In the second period of added time, Hunt was booked (110 mins). Alty posed little threat in added time during which Madeley was booked for kicking the ball away (116 mins). And so, the game went into a penalty shoot-out.

Bebbington for Woodley and Bailey for Alty each saw their penalties saved, before Sellers shot dribbled into the net following Jones's excellent half-stop. Madeley and Lillie both converted their spot-kicks comfortably either side of Hapley's successful kick for Woodley. McNally made it 3-2 to Woodley after both Sanckson and Killilea had fired their efforts over the bar. With Melling-Fong needing to score to keep Alty in the game, Hughes saved his shot. Indeed, it was the Sports' keeper who had kept his side in the game in the first half, which is when Alty really lost this game by failing to convert their superiority into goals.
