YOUTH REPORT

Alty started this match in fourth place in the league, following a good performance against Morecambe the week before. But Ben Oliver was sick and Steven Crane was on the bench, resting a knock. Yet again, the match was played with one official being absent. Then the game was interrupted whilst Alty keeper changed his green jersey because it clashed with the Nantwich shirts. From the start it was obvious that a strong diagonal wind was going to affect this game. Altrincham needed a victory in this game to keep the pressure on the three teams above them.

Altrincham allowed the game to start at a slow tempo but in the 9th minute Nantwich tested Andrew Jones, who saved well. This move originated from a diagonal cross-field pass over Jack Kimber's head to the Nantwich left-wing. After a period of stalemate, Tom Bailey was unlucky when his shot was cleared off the line (18 mins).

Nantwich began to create further chances and in the 20th minute, the Altrincham defence was bisected and the home side nearly took the lead with a shot just clearing the bar. However, a minute later, Nantwich took the lead when they capitalised on a moment of hesitation by Jones in coming out at a forward's feet.

Then, in the 29th minute, Altrincham equalised when Charlie Weir was fouled in the area and Tom Bailey scored the resultant penalty. In the 34th minute Bailey was fouled but soon recovered to continue. Then, in the 35th minute Weir missed a chance when the ball rebounded off him to the centre-half. However in the 40th minute disaster struck for Altrincham when the defence were slack in clearing the ball and Nantwich took their chance to lead 2-1. Immediately before half-time Daniel Killilea played a through ball to Bailey, whose effort cleared the bar.

Altrincham started the second half quite brightly with Bailey and Killilea having shots saved by Holmes in the Nantwich goal. In the 54th minute, further good work by Altrincham created a chance but it was disallowed for offside. Then, in the 57th minute Altrincham had a double let-off when Nantwich missed with a header and a shot. Altrincham created further scoring opportunities via Killilea and Bailey in the 68th and 74th minute. Also, a cross from the left flank was met by a Bailey header but the keeper dealt with all these threats. Then, with five minutes to go Steven Crane and Declan Wakefield replaced Jason Melling-Fong and Chris Francis. Nantwich finally sealed the match with a cross which eluded the defenders and was combined with bad marking. Finally, Steven Crane struck a shot over the bar and Altrincham ended a poor display with a defeat which was hard to explain as there were only two changes from the side that did so well versus Morecambe.
