REPORT

With Nottingham side Greenwood Meadows having withdrawn, Alty now had four games to play in their qualifying group. This was their first match and it was against unknown opposition, Scottish side Wemyss United. All of the games were reduced to 25 minutes each way to ensure that the wet pitches lasted for the duration of the tournament. Another change from previous years was that all games in this group now had assistant referees and five substitutes could be used.

Alty were without Paul Barry (work commitments) and Declan Wakefield who was feeling ill.

The following report is courtesy of manager George Heslop.

This was the typical tale of a game of two halves. Alty started well but finished with a whimper. After 5 minutes Alty went ahead with a quality goal from Chris Francis. Bailey's tremendous cross field set up Sam Madeley to score, with aplomb, from a header after 13 minutes to make it 2-0. Then Steven Crane played in Tom Bailey to score the third (17 mins). On the stroke of half time a headed clearance from Wemyss fell for Madeley who netted his second and Altrincham's fourth goal of the game.

At half-time Daly replaced Madeley up front. Before Daly could settle, a misjudged pass left Zareh-Ourang flat-footed and the Scots took advantage to score (26 mins). Altrincham were not now playing the fluent game they had exhibited in the first half. Alty made three more changes during the second period. After 31 minutes Cosgrave replaced Zareh-Ourang. After 38 minutes, Danny Browne gave way to Sam Williamson. As a result Chris Francis moved to centre-midfield from the left. Three minutes later Adam Alwill replaced Crane, with Daly moving to Crane's central midfield position.

Altrincham will have to improve if they are to make progress in this competition.
