REPORT

Report, below, based on information kindly provided by George Heslop.

Altrincham suffered a blow in the warm-up, when Daniel Gray injured his knee in the warm-up and had to be replaced by Kieran Raynes.

Altrincham started brightly, spending much of the early stages in the Prescot half, but poor finishing meant that two or three good chances went begging. However, midway through the half Alty went ahead when Deegan scored. But the home side then took their foot off the pedal and gave the ball away cheaply, allowing Cables back into the game. Neverthless, debutant Alty goalkeeper Danny Chebruka (16) was not kept very busy but did what he had to assuredly. Half time arrived with Alty holding their one-goal lead.

No team-changes were made at the interval. Prescot got level when they won a penalty, which was converted well with a shot into the keeper's bottom right-hand corner. Later, Alty's Deegan was asked to leave the game for ten minutes after making excessive protests about decisions to referee Dean Phillips, who kept good control of the game. Connell came on to replace Deegan and then Keogh replaced Bryant. With six minutes left, Alty got their second goal through Benson and with two minutes remaining, Keogh scored a third goal, which was an early contender for goal of the season, when he got onto a clearance 35 yards out and struck a volley which roared into the top of the net. Alty's fitness ensured that they finished the stronger side.
