REPORT

With Lee Hendley on the bench, Hassan Zareh-Ourang was the only change the starting line-up which had played the previous two games, which included an impressive win over Morecambe. Richard Gresty assumed Hendley's captain's armband.

The following report is by George Heslop, for which I am grateful.

On a very hot day, against the double cup-winners (Premier and Open) and League champions, things went wrong for Altrincham before kick-off when leading scorer and captain Lee Hendley dropped out of the starting line-up with an injury sustained in the previous day's Reserves' match. So, Adam Walker moved up front and Hassan Zareh-Ourang took over at right midfield.

As early as the fifth minute, Ben Deegan was brought down in the penalty area but the referee, Paul Haworth, waved play-on. Altrincham kept battling away against a good Morecambe side. Coming up to the 30 minute mark, Altrincham lost their captain, Richard Gresty, with an ankle ligament injury. He was replaced by James Monaghan.

Then, just before half-time, the Robins were reduced to ten men when Ryan Stewart came off with an ankle injury. Whilst he was off the pitch, Morecambe were awarded a very dubious penalty after a corner had been cleared and Alty went behind - 1-0 Morecambe!

At half-time, Lee Hendley replaced Ryan Stewart. The game was evenly balanced until a defensive error conceded a soft second goal to Morecambe. Then came the final straw when Ben Deegan received a second yellow card and was dismissed!. Altrincham made a further substitution, with Ryan Donnelly replacing Ryan McDarmaid.

Morecambe passed the ball well against the ten men and scored a good third goal. Morecambe, overall, deserved to win but some very strange refereeing decisions had a direct effect on the game.
