REPORT

Alty had John Parker-Chambers back at left-back so Ryan Stewart moved forward to left midfield. Leigh got in the first shot of note, which went wide, but Altrincham had another early worry when Arron Hevingham went down shortly after apparently injuring himself making a tackle. After treatment, however, he resumed (6 mins). Altrincham then threatened when Stewart won possession and, via Walker, possession came to Ball, on the right, but his low shot was saved at the near post (13 mins). However, within a minute Altrincham went ahead. Gresty played a well-judged ball for Walker up the centre from just inside his own half. Walker neatly evaded a challenge before driving a shot into the net, though the keeper got his hands to it in a good attempt to make a save (14 mins).

Leigh won themselves a corner not long after going behind, which Milner gathered at the second attempt. In fact the visitors enjoyed a short spell of pressure before Altrincham won a corner at the other end (24 mins). Parker-Chambers then did well to stop the visitors' number nine before Walker was tripped by Cowley after the Alty striker had got round another defender. An obviously pre-rehearsed freekick routine was executed poorly by Altrincham and the ball was cleared. On the half-hour mark, Stewart headed wide from a Monaghan freekick after a foul on Monagahan himself, some 30 yards out.

Alty withstood some further attacks from Leigh before a Walker cross led a Leigh player to slice the ball over his own bar for a corner. From this, Garland had a header saved. Next, Ball found Hendley and his low shot from the left was well saved (41 mins). The Alty captain then won a corner but this came to nothing. As half-time approached Milner made a good catch from an aerial ball to keep his side ahead by one goal to nil.

Early in the second half Hendley pulled up with an injury in the Leigh penalty area but resumed after treatment. After an uneventful few minutes, Alty won a corner which Stewart headed narrowly over (57 mins). Another corner followed on the hour mark and after Stewart had done well from a Hevingham feed, he sliced his shot wide (61 mins). The limping Monaghan was then substituted, along with Adam Ball, the new players being Depeiaza and Bryant. Depeiaza went up front, with Hendley, whilst Bryant went into midfield where he was to have an impressive game (62 mins).

Following a Garland freekick, Bryant soon fired in a good shot from outside the box which the keeper just tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner, taken by Stewart on the right, Walker rose unchallenged to head home from close range (65 mins). Alty coach Neil Thomason announced that this was the team's first goal from a corner all season! Altrincham were now firmly in control and a good ball from Bryant to Walker saw Alty threaten again. A third goal did arrive soon afterwards when a fine ball from Walker found Hendley, who controlled the ball before lobbing the keeper (72 mins).

As Alty celebrated the goal the referee appeared to caution Hevingham who was then substituted by Deegan (73 mins). The visitors then made a change as Rodgers came on for ?Moulen, who had made a couple of good crosses from the left earlier in the game. Leigh began to come back into the game after failing to trouble Milner unduly up to this point in the second half. Deegan was then booked for a rash challenge (85 mins) before Altrincham won a corner (88mins). Leigh had a corner themselves, a minute later, which needed a clearance off the Alty line but the home side held on to record another clean sheet and extend their unbeaten league run to seven games.
