MATCH REPORT

Altrincham were without Stevie Taylor (work commitments), Stuart Cook (awaiting international clearance after joining Connah's Quay Nomads in Wales) and Lewis Chalmers (suspended). Adam Douthwaite was back in his right-back berth after playing recently in right midfield. Kelvin Lugsden played today on the right of midfield and Josh Collins on the left and the spectators included Altrincham's first-team goalkeeper Stuart Coburn.

On a dull afternoon it was Prestwich Heys who had the first attempt on goal when a free-kick from the right led to a header which was well saved by Barry George in the Altrincham goal, fresh from a fine performance yesterday for the Cheshire FA side. Altrincham replied with a good cross from Collins which saw Lunt's snap shot well saved by the Heys keeper, low to his right (7 mins). Altrincham had the better of the opening stages and threatened again when Collins won a back post header but none of his colleagues could turn it in (10 mins). Next, Kelvin Lugsden fired in a 25 yarder which only just cleared the bar (12 mins). A good interchange between Lewis and Kieran Lugsden then saw the latter knock his effort just wide as the goalkeeper came out to challenge him (16 mins).

At the back, the Alty back four were keeping Barry George almost a spectator but Norton did win the visitors a corner which George caught (23 mins). At the other end, a good cross from the left by Lunt saw Kelvin Lugsden inches away from making contact with his head in front of goal (24 mins) and then Tooth, Lewis and Lunt combined well on the left but the danger was cleared. A good Alty move involving both Lugsdens, Connor and Lewis led to a Collins header which won Alty a corner on the left (29 mins). Altrincham continued to have the better of the game as Lever came out smartly to smother the ball before Kieran Lugsden could poke it past him (36 mins). Heys then got a sight of goal but shot over the bar as Tooth made a tackle (38 mins) before a neat lay-off from Lunt saw Kelvin Lugsden fire in his second long-range shot of the half and this again only just cleared the bar (38 mins). When Kieran Lugsden was obstructed soon afterwards, the referee allowed Altrincham to play on but then Cooper fouled the Alty striker to concede a free-kick, 30 yards out. Alex Frost took a quick free-kick which found Matt Tooth advancing into the left of the Prestwich box and the Alty left back sent a low shot into the right-hand corner of the net to give his side the lead (40 mins).

Kieran Lugsden was then asked to go off to receive treatment and when he returned to the pitch after clearance from the linesman, the referee attempted to book him for allegedly having left the pitch without permission. However, common sense eventually prevailed and play continued. Altrincham continued to press and Kieran Lugsden was then jostled off the ball in a dangerous position for Prestwich, inside their box. Kelvin Lugsden won Alty a late corner but half-time came with the score still 1-0.

After a foul by Walen on Kieran Lugsden, Kelvin Lugsden got involved in the aftermath and was booked for his pains (47 mins). Soon, a good move from Altrincham, started by Douthwaite who had a fine game, led to Kieran Lugsden crossing for Lunt to head at goal, but the keeper saved well (48 mins). An error in the Alty defence by Howarth saw McLowry advance into the right side of the box but George was out smartly to make a fine save and beat the ball out for a corner (50 mins). Good skill by Collins then allowed Kieran Lugsden an overhead shot which went wide. However, Josh Collins did even better soon afterwards when he got past Rowbotham on he left and found Kieran Lugsden, who was tripped in the box. The referee allowed play to continue and the loose ball came to the back post where Lunt finished cleanly from very close range to make it 2-0 to Altrincham (55 mins).

Kieran Lugsden was caught once again, this time by Cooper, who also appeared to react to the clash but the referee, after consulting his linesman, took no further action. Cooper soon fouled Lugsden again and this time was lectured by Mr Haworth. From the free-kick, again quickly taken by Frost, Tooth's shot hit the near post and a corner resulted for Altrincham (60 mins). Collins then lashed in a fine shot which was well saved but gave Altrincham another corner. The keeper failed to hold Lewis's corner and another corner resulted on the Alty right. From this Collins got in another good shot which Lever saved well (62 mins). Soon Lever was in action again, parrying out a Kieran Lugsden shot. When a Prestwich player's arms caught Josh Collins in the air, the Alty man had to leave the pitch with a cut near his right eye. He was replaced by Andy Thorpe (64 mins) and at the same time Adam Ball replaced Kieran Lugsden. Thorpe went up front whilst Ball replaced Collins on the left.

Next, Barry George smothered the ball well in a rare piece of action for him at the Alty end. From his clearance the ball came to Lunt in the box and he was brought down by Lever, the goalkeeper, as Steve knocked the ball to his right. A penalty was awarded to Alty for the third successive game and for the third time, captain Alex Frost converted confidently, sending the keeper the wrong way (70 mins).

Heys won a corner before making a triple substitution (75 mins). At the same time Tom Hilton replaced Kelvin Lugsden for Altrincham. Play now drifted along with Altrincham comfortably ahead. Prestwich won three corners in the final 15 minutes but these were all cleared. Alty added a fourth goal when another astute free-kick from Frost found both Lunt and Ball in the Heys box. It was Ball who got to the ball first and sidefooted it neatly past the keeper from 12 yards to make it 4-0 in the last minute of normal time. The referee somehow found five minutes of added time but there was no further scoring and Altrincham advanced comfortably into the third round of the Premier Cup after an impressive performance.
