Altrincham included first-team squad members Colin Potts and Pat McFadden, whilst Lee Hendley was on the bench as he returned from a longstanding injury. Morecambe had first-teamer Danny Carlton up front.

Alty were two up inside a quarter of an hour thanks to two strikes from Pat McFadden, as they faced a young Morecambe side which included Conference striker Danny Carlton. But Alty let thngs slip as the interval approached and Carlton netted twice (37 and 44 mins) to level things up at the break.

At the interval it was discovered that Ball had been concussed at the end of the half and as manager Neil Brown and physio Alan Ainslie dealt with the injury in the dressing room, Morecambe scored two more goals to take a grip of the game. The scorers were Rendell (50 mins) and Carlton completed his hat-trick (60 mins). But Alty responded and got back on level terms through goals by Marsden and Hendley. James Marsden described his goal afterwards as "a rocket shot"! Morecambe took the points when they scored again five minutes from the end, Carlton notching his fourth of the night.
