ALTRINCHAM FC PLAYERS OF 1980-81

BACK: P. Warburton (coach), B. Whitbread, F. Towers, G. Barrow, J. Connaughton, J. Owens, J. Johnson, J. Evans (physio).
FRONT: J. Rogers, B. Howard, J. King (capt), A. Sanders (manager), J. Davison, S. Allan, G. Heathcote.

At the end of 1979-80, Altrincham had missed out on election to the Football League by one vote, As the AP Leamington programme of 16 September 1980 put it, "Altrincham shouldn't be here tonight. They should be enjoying a new life in the Football League... Someone said that the late arrival of one delegate [from Luton Town] cost Altrincham their treasured place in the Football League".

The following pen pictures are based on profiles in Burscough v Altrincham programme, 22 November 1980 and the AP Leamington v Altrincham programme of 16 September 1980.

  • Tony SANDERS Manager. Began at New Brighton and was assistant at Skelmersdale when they won the F.A. Amateur Cup. Formerly with Bangor City and joined Altrincham as assistant manager. Appointed manager in 1976.
  • Peter WARBURTON Coach. Was formerly assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. Joined Altrincham in 1977.
  • John CONNAUGHTON Goalkeeper. Formerly with Man. Utd. Halifax Town, Torquay United, Sheffield Utd and Port Vale. Has over 200 Football League appearances. Joined the Robins at the end of last season.
  • Stan ALLAN Defender. Formerly at Skelmersdale. The only player to hold an F.A. Cup Amateur winner's medal and an F.A.Trophy Winner's medal.
  • Malcolm BAILEY Defender. Formerly with Northwich Victoria, Port Vale and Runcorn, when they won Northern Premier League. Joined 1977.
  • Ivan CROSSLEY Defender. Seven years with the club. Previously with Bangor and, Coventry City.
  • John DAVISON Defensive midfielder. Joined Altrincham from Burnley in 1971/72. Had a short spell with Bangor City in 1976 but soon returned to Moss Lane. Played for England semi-professional side for the last two years.
  • John OWENS Defender. Vice captain. Had spell with Skelmersdale, from where he was signed. Fully qualified F.A. Coach.
  • Graham TOBIN Defender. Joined from local Football. League clubs have shown interest.
  • Graham BARROW Midfield. Transferred from Southport last season. Previously with Chorley. Can play forward. Represented Northern Premier League.
  • Jeff JOHNSON Midfield/forward. Player of the Year twice. Signed from Hyde United in 1976 and with Stockport County earlier that year. Supporters' association Player of the Year for the second time in three seasons last year.
  • John KING Midfield. Captain. One of the most famous non-league players. A junior with both Shrewsbury and Everton before linking up with Kirkby Town and then Wigan Athletic. He then joined joined Northwich Victoria before signing for the Robins in 1977.
  • Barry HOWARD Forward. Joined from Stockport 1978. Played for England non-league side in Italy. Previously with Runcorn, Hyde United and Oldham Athletic.
  • John ROGERS Formerly with Port Vale. Started career at Burscough. Leading scorer past two seasons. Scored in both his FA Trophy Final appearances, for Wigan (1973) and Altrincham (1978). Joined Altrincham in 1977.
  • Barry WHITBREAD Record buy from Runcorn. Scored 181 goals in 5 seasons for Runcorn before joining Altrincham. Previously with Lancaster City. Played for England semi-professional side in 1979 and 1980, a fully qualified FA coach.
  • Graham HEATHCOTE Joined as 16 year old and been withe club for ten years except for a spell with Northwich Victoria in 1976.
