ALTRINCHAM FC PLAYERS OF 1979-80
Based on profiles in Scarborough v Altrincham programme, 1 January 1980 and AP Leamington v Altrincham, October 1979.
ALEX STEPNEY: Had a long and distinguished career with Manchester United, Chelsea and Millwall and was capped for England before joining Dallas Tornados in the North American League. Now on loan to the Robins until February.
STAN ALLAN: Signed from Skelmersdale in 1972, whom he was with for 4 years. He is the unique holder of both FA Trophy and Amateur Cup winners' medals. Started his career with Kirkby Town. A toolsetter by trade.
JOHN DAVISON: An England non-league international and a B.Sc., he was formerly with Northwich. Now in his second spell with the Club whom he was previously with for five years. Another former British universities' player, who was a junior at Burnley. A schoolteacher by profession, he holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry. Played for England in last season's two non-league internationals.
MALCOLM BAILEY: Signed in August 1977 from Runcorn, where he was for four years and where he won a NPL championship medal. Previous clubs Northwich Victoria and Port Vale. Employed in the engineering trade.
JOHN OWENS: Another graduate, he is an M.Sc. in Mathematics. He is in his eighth season with the Robins after a short spell with Skelmersdale United. Former captain of the Birish Universities' team. School teacher by profession and the Club's vice captain. A fully qualified FA coach, he spent part of the summer coaching in America.
JOHN KING: The club captain, signed two years ago from Northwich and immediately appointed club captain. A great driving force on the field, formerly with Kirkby Town and Wigan Athletic. A junior with both Everton and Shrewsbury Town, he captained the NPL side last season. A scaffolder by trade.
GRAHAM HEATHCOTE: In his second spell at Moss Lane after graduating through the youth team. Had trials with Plymouth Argyle. Employed as a shipping clerk with the port of Manchester Authority.
BARRY WHITBREAD: Signed from Runcorn in September for a club record fee of £6,400.
JEFF JOHNSON: Signed in 1976 from Hyde United. He has had Football League experience with Stockport County. One of Altrincham's top goalscorers last season. An engineer by trade.
JOHN ROGERS: Signed from Port Vale in July 1977 after experience with Wigan. He was Altrincham's leading goalscorer last season and voted Player of the Year. Has played in America for Portland Timbers and represented the NPL last season. An electrician with MANWEB.
BARRY HOWARD: Signed in June 1978 for a club record fee from Stockport County, whom he joined from Runcorn, following a spell with Hyde United. He represented the England non-league side against Italy in Bolzano in May 1977. Painter and decorator by trade.
PHIL WILSON: Signed just prior to the start of the season from Runcorn for a substantial fee. Started with New Brighton before joining Wigan Athletic. Qualified FA coach and schoolteacher in his native Merseyside. Accomplished squash player, being a member of the Merseyside County squash team.
